Ephratah Lad Falls Into Creek, Swept Under Ice
Anthony Christman, Jr., Had Narrow Escape fromDrowning During Noon Hour—Was Rescued Through Hole Chopped in Ice—Brought to Hospital
Here
Anthony Christman, Jr., 9-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Christman of Ephratah, had a miraculous escape from death by drowning this afternoon shortly after 12, when he was swept under the ice in Sprite Creek in the village after he bad tumbled into the water from a small foot bridge.
According to the report, It was only through the quick thinking and prompt action on the part of several men of the vicinity, who chopped a hole in the ice with a crowbar and dragged the lad to ths surface, that he is alive.
Ths boy was enjoying the noon recess from ths village school and had started for a small store near Duesler's garage, at the rear of which ths creek flows, to purchase candy. In order to reach the store it was necessary for him to cross the small bridge, under which there was a space of running water about one and one-half feet wide between the ice.
There was quite a swift current which swept him under the surface of the ice but it was so shallow he became lodged a short distance from where hs disappeared. A lad who was with him called for help and the group of men rushed to the creek bank.
Making a guess, which fortunately was ths right one, as to where the lad had lodged, the men cut a hole with the crowbar and brought him out.
He was carried to the nearby garage and Dr. E. G. Gillmore of this city, was summoned. When the physician arrived hs found ths boy in a semi-conscious condition and ordered him removed to the Ira Duesler home, where he was placed in a warm bed and restoratives were administered.
Dr. Gillmore then turned the case over to the family physician, Dr. Dominic Battaglia, who had the lad removed to Memorial hospital In the Cole ambulance. Unless complications develop he is not expected to suffer any serious effects from his experience.
Dr. Gillmore, in speaking of the accldent this afternoon, was loud in his praise of the group of men who rescued the lad, for their quick thinking and action and their work in caring for him until the physian arrived.- Obituary (Find A Grave)
