Fred Israel died March 28, 2010, at his home in Somerset, New Jersey, and he was a Holocaust survivor and a hidden child during World War II.
Fred Israel was born January 22, 1941, his real name -- ManfredIsraelski -- son on Benjamin Israel (Israelski) and Ida Kuflicki Israel in a displaced camp in Belzen, Belgium. At 18 months of age, he was hidden from the Nazis in a Cloister -- St Joseph in Munsterblizen in the province of Limberg, Belgium. He was a hiddenchild from September 1942 to September 1944 when he joined his parents and lived in and around Liege, Belgium. During this time his anme was Manfred Kuflik. He was a hidden Jew. This was his only chance of survival during the war years.
His father, Benjamin Israel, was very active in the Polish underground resistance movement. He lived across the street from Gestapo headquarters and was wanted by the Gestapo for arson, murder, and espionage. Fred's mother, Ida, was hidden in another cloister which housewd the insane, individuals detested by the Nazis, in Belgium as a cook. In secret and at great peril, both of his (parents) would walk to visit their son each week across the bombed outfields and through enemy territory.
They were able to immigrate to America in 1948 and lived in Bronx, New York. Fred attended Yeshiva, at great pride to his parents, and graduated from Stuyvesant High School. Fred was accepted to Columbia with an academic scholarship, but without the necessary funds to help his struggling family he went to the City College of New York (CCNY) and graduated with a degree in physics.
During the Vietnam WAr, Fred served the United States of America as a member of the Bronx National Guard. His parents prominently displaced (sic displayed) his photograph in uniform in their home.
Fred workee at Bendix Aviation in Little Ferry, NJ, and designed intefrated circuits for space and US defense. He designed many items that are still secret, including the 747, 707 and Concord airplanes as well as the lunar space module. He worked on the moon project and helped desighn items that allowed man to take the first steps on the moon. When the space program was closiong in the 1970's and Bendix was moving, he taught himself how to fix computers and learn everything about them. He learned all the various computer languages and worked at developing many computer systems. He has desighned many systems at Citibank and was a senior systems analysis (sic analyst) for over 20 years. He has been in Who's Who in Business Banking for many years.
He married Sarah Timmerman Isreal on January 17, 1971, in Albany, New York. Fred, Sarah and his family has lived in New Jersey for over 30 years. Fred was involved with the children's activities while they were growing up and was a boy scout leader, band parent, swim coach, amateur ham radio operator, 4-H leader, and also raised seeing-eye puppies for the Seeing Eye Foundation in Moristown, New Jersey. They have four children, Rachel (Zelooney) and her husband Isaac, Aaron NAthan Israel and his wife, Stefanie, Daniel Saul Israel amd Helene Rivkah Israel. Fred was very proud of his two grndsons, Morris Zetooney and Benjamin Israel, and was always involved in many activities.
Fred was buried MArch 29, 2010, at the Floral PArk Cemetery located in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey.
The family will miss him very much.
