Harold “Red” F. Gray, Jr., 79, of Cornville, AZ and more recently of Oppenheim, NY, passed away on Wednesday morning, January 2, 2013 at the home of his sister, Dorothy, in Oppenheim, NY with his family by his side.
Red was born on April 1, 1933 in Waterloo, New York, a son of the late, Harold and Ruby (Ward) Gray. He was educated in Little Falls High School.
Upon his graduation, Red enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He entered in July of 1952. During his enlistment, Red earned the rank of Sergeant. He earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star (2nd Award), Purple Heart (2nd Award), Korean Service Medal, United Nations, Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal. While in the military, Red attended the United States Armed Forces Institute after his service in the United States Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in May of 1955.
He was formerly employed as a building contractor for his own business, Gray and Sons Builders in Cornville, AZ. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of many groups and organizations which includes the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge where he was a 32nd Degree Mason and a 50 year member, a member of the Grande Lodge, Mingus Mountain Shrine Club, Shriner’s International, past State Commander of the American Legion of the State of Arizona, a lifelong member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. At one time he was the justice of the peace for the Town of Oppeneheim. He enjoyed going out to dance as a past time. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved children, Kevin Gray and his wife, Andi of Cornville, AZ, Sherrie Taviera of Medford, OR, Cindy Westervelt and her husband, Joel of Camp Verde, AZ, Jeffery Gray and his wife, Brenda of Tuscon AZ; sisters, Dorothy Young of Oppenheim, NY, Judy Hall and her husband, Zane, of Clifton Park, NY, Ruby Louella Grande and her husband, Jack of Greenfield, NY, Mary Wright and her husband, Duane, of Greenfield, NY; brothers, Robert Gray and his companion, Jeanette Jaiken of Salisbury, NY, Ronald Gray and his wife, Pat, of Oppenheim, NY; nine cherished grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Charlie Gray, and his sister, Donna Shepardson.
In keeping with Red’s wishes, there will be memorial service to be held in Cottonwood Cemetery in Cottonwood, Arizona at a date to be announced, where military honors will be accorded. Arrangements are with Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York 13329.
