  Little Falls – A feature of the meeting of the Delta Gamma Delta Sorority held in the American Legion rooms Thursday evening was a beauty contest in which about 20 girls of the sorority participated and which was won by Miss Mildred Ruby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Ruby67, 256 Church street)
  Miss Ruby was picked as the best looking girl of the 20 or more contestants by the judges who were Miss Marian Warner, Utica and Misses Fredericka Vickers and Mary Clark, Little Falls, Heretofore the contest was held at  the grand convention but this year each chapter selects its eligible member and her picture is sent to the national booklet of the chapter known as “The Owl” The national prize beauty is selected from the pictures.
  Alpha Beta chapter was honored by the presence of the grand treasurer, Miss Marian Warner, Utica, who was presented with a corsage of American roses and white sweet peas. A covered dish supper was served.

  Mrs. Daisy Loomis, 1127 Jefferson, wife of Irving Loomis, died Nov. 27, 1946, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, after a short illness.
  She was born in New Bedford, Mass., July 1, 1924, a daughter of Mrs. Daisy fletcher Bills and the late Fred Greenwood, and came to Utica 15 years ago. She was educated in Utica schools and was a member of Centenary Church. Her marrage to Mr. Loomis took place ther July 7, 1941.
  Mrs. Loomis is survived by one daughter, Donna Loomis; by her mother and three sisters, The Misses Lillian, Winifred and Doris Greenwood, Utica.
  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Gordon Funeral Home, Burial will be in New Forest Cemetery.

  LIVERPOOL—Garry W. Gardner, 61, of 5053 Vine St., Liverpool, died last night at his home of a heart attack.
  A native of Verona, he was the son of William G. and Harriet Gardner.
  Mr- Gardner had lived in Liverpool the past 20 years. Where he and his brother operated the Gardner Decorating and Building Service.
   He was a memebr of North Syracuse Baptist Church.
  Surviving are his wife, Lois Matthews Gardner, formerly of the Rome area; two daughters, Mrs. Gaye Austin, of Bowie, Md. and Miss Vickie Gardner, at home; a grandson; three brothers; three sisters and several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be at 2 Monday at Sears Funeral Home, North Syracuse with the Rev. Edward Stady officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery, Warners.

   Traveling through New England and Cape Cod are Mr. and Mrs. David Lee Austin who were united in marriage yesterday. The bride, the former Miss Gaye Ellen Gardner, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garry W. Gardner of Clay. The bridegroom is the son of mr. and Mrs. Floyd Austin of East Syracuse.
  The Rev. Ernest L. Laycock officiated at the 3 p.m. ceremony in North Syracuse Baptist Church. A reception followed in the church parlor.
  Miss Vicki Lynn Gardner, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Judith Paulk, Miss Carol Breckenridge, Miss Gloria Walker and Miss Lynn Kleiman.
  Dennis Austin was best man for his brother. Ushers were Jerry Weimer, Frank Krawcek, David Grimm and Keith Gardner.

Hazel Lois Smith

  Hazel Lois (Smith) Mathews was born in Marshlands, PA on December 24, 1917 the daughter of Luther and Eva (McClain) Smith. She received her education in Pennsylvania schools.
  On November 26, 1948 she married Robert E. Mathews in Herkimer, New York. They became parents to a daughter, Diane L and a son, Rodney A. Mathews. Her husband, Robert, predeceased her on February 4, 1999.
  Hazel was employed by the Dolgeville Central School as an account clerk/secretary for the business office under Richard Jorrey. She retired from there several years prior to her death.
  She was of the Methodist faith attending the Dolgeville United Methodist Church, along with assisting the ladies of the Salisbury Center Methodist Church in church functions. Her other affiliation was with the Salisbury Center Grange. She personally enjoyed gardening at her home, both with flowers and vegetables.
  Hazel died unexpectedly on September 1, 2009 at the Alpine Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in Little Falls.

  Mr. Mathews, ov 2016 W. Marlette, was a purchasing agent for a local plumbing company. He was a member of Christ Church of Ascension and a veteral of World War II. Born in Utica, N.Y., he came here from Chadwicks, N.Y.
  Surviving are his wife Patricia, and a son David, of Phoenix; hid mother, Mrs. Reva Mathews of Torrance, Calif.; his grandmother, Mrs. Dora Rich of Chadwicks, N.Y., and a sister out of state.

She was attired in a brown suit with white accessories and wore an orchid corsage. Her matron of honor, Mrs. Kenneth Ruhm of Utica, wore an aqua suit and an orchid corsage.
  The best man was Howard Smoulcey, cousin of the bridegroom. William Mathews Jr., brother of the bride, and Kenneth Ruhm were ushers.
  Following a reception and dinner in Legion Hall the couple left for New York. Upon their return they will live in Sydney.

  ILION - Ulysses I. Bunce, 64, 41 Cottage St., Ilion, died Tuesday, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Utica.
  He was bom in 1924, in the Town of Columbia, a son of Paul and Clara Bunce. He attended Ilion High School and was married to Betty Van Sickle. She died in 1980. Mr. Bunce was employed for many years, by Univac, and retired in 1986, from the Ilion Housing Authority. Mr. Bunce served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II. and was a member of the V.F.W. of Ilion.
  [He is survived by] two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Sandra) Potter, ---, Calif. and Mrs. Lewis (Claire) Sudakow, of Ilion; a sister, Vera Bunce, Utica; a brother Pauld Bunce Jr., Schuyler. Additional survivors are several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Congdon.
  Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 4, from the Applegate Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Greene officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Poland, NY. Friends may call on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Assoc Envelopes will he available at the funeral home.

  ILION — Betty P. Bunce, 57, of 41 Cottage Street, former operator of Mickey's Diner, died Friday, January 25,1980.
  She was born on May 29, 1922 in St. Mary's Ohio, the daughter of Leo and Irene Hammond VanSickle. On August 16,1946 she married Ulysses I. Bunce in Newport, N.Y. Mrs. Bunce was a member of the Ilion American Legion Auxiliary and the Ilion V.F.YV. Auxiliary.
  Survivors include her husband; three daughters. Mrs. Herbert (Sharon) Palmer and Mrs Lewis (Claire) Sudakow, both of Ilion and Mrs Mark (Sandra) Potter, California: two sons, Gerald Karpp. Madison. N.Y. and Eugene Zarro, Conn.; two brothers, William VanSickle, Ilion and James VanSickle, Utica: several grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Funeral services will be held 11:00 a m Monday at the Applegate Funeral Home, Ilion. Calling hours are Sunday 2-4 and 7-9. The Ilion V.F.W. Auxiliary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday and the Ilion American Legton Auxillary Service will be 7:30 Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes for this purpose are available at the funeral home.

  ILION — Miss Sharon Irene Bunce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Bunce, 41 Cottage St., and Leonard Albert Seamon, 128 E. Mam St., son of Mr. and Mrs. Merton Palmer, Burlington Flats, were married at 2 p.m. May 23 at the United Methodist Church here.
  The Rev. Charles S. Williams, pastor, performed the double ring ceremony. Decorations were two vases of pink gladioli. Mrs. Rankins, Mohawk, was organist.
  Miss Claire Bunce was her sister’s maid of honor. The Misses Daureen Tubia and Debbie Judson were bridesmaids. Larry Rephon was best man and Wayne Moss and Jack Miller vere ushers.
 The bride wore pink crepe over taffeta, trimmed with lace, and fashioned with a floor-length train. Her veil was French illusion, worn with a jeweled crown. She carried a Colonial cascade bouquet of white carnations, centered with pink roses.
  The maid of honor was in light blue, floor-length, with matching crown headpiece. She carried a colonial bouquet of white carnations, centered with sweetheart roses. Miss Tubia wore yellow crepe with a Colonial bouquet of white carnations tied with satin bows and a matching floral headpiece, while Miss Judson was similary gowned in blue, with similar flowers.
  A reception followed from 3 to 6 at the Valley Tavern, Mohawk. The couple are making their home at 128 E. Main St. here.
  The bride attended Hamilton Central High School and is employed by UNIVAC, Ilion, while the bridegroom attended Richfield Springs schools and is also a UNIVAC employe.
  A shower was given by the bridal party.
  Guests attended from New Berlin, Cold Brook, Little Falls, Burlington Flats, Dolgeville and Valley towns.

  LITTLE FALLS—Carol Congdon, 31/2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orlyn Congdon, of Little Falls RD 2, died yesterday in Little Falls Hospital after brief illness. Death was due to natural causes.
  She was born on Dec. 21, 1955, in Ilion. The family moved here from Danube four months ago. Besides her parents she leaves two brothers, James Paul and Orlyn, and two sisters, Clara and Cathy, all at home: paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Congdon, Little Falls RD 3; maternal grandfather, Paul Bunce of Richfield Springs; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
  Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Newitt-Bly Funeral Home, the Rev. Fred C. Thorne, pastor of Baptist Church, officiating.

  LITTLE FALLS - A haying accident about 3:15. yesterday on the Lower Paradise Road, Town of Danube, resulted in the death of James P. Congdon, 21, of 335 East Albany St. Herkimer.
  State Police said that Congdon was haying for with four other persons on the farm of Lloyd Congdon, his uncle, when the elevator malfunctioned due to a broken chain.
  Congdon reportedly lay down on another elevator to reach the chain and received an electrical shock from a faulty switch. The electrical jolt caused him to fall about eight feet.
  He was taken to Little Falls Hospital where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Bernard Burke. Death was ruled by Herkimer County Coroner, Brian Roberts of Dolgeville, as accidental due to a broken neck.
  Congdon was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orlyn Congdon and a graduate of Little Falls High School.
