- Obituary (Find A Grave)
Lyle M. Thorpe, 99, of Anderson Road, Tolland, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2008 at Rockville General Hospital.
He was born on May 25, 1909 in Venice, NY the son of the late Richard and Ethel Thorpe and was raised on a small farm in upstate New York in the town of Moravia, near Keuka Lake. He attended Cornell University, in Ithaca and there took an interest in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology. He worked his college summers in the Adirondacks Mountains of New York and there met some of the leading trout fisheries people of that time. He began his professional career in 1936, accepting a position as a fisheries biologist with the CT Dept. of Fisheries and Game. He loved the work and over the course of some 30 years, rose to the position of Director of that agency. During his tenure as a civil servant, he earned a reputation as a strong and fearless leader, particularly when pitted against a federal bureaucracy. He retired from state service in 1966 at the age of 57, but was still interested in fish and wildlife matters. As it happened, a friend, Don Wirth, then employed with an International consulting firm in Boston, thought that Lyle and he would make a good team to do land and water management consulting work along the eastern seaboard. Lyle was hired and spent the next 16 years working with Don on fisheries restoration projects, primarily for electric utility companies.
Lyle retired again in 1982 in order to spend more time fishing, hunting and enjoying his ownership of the Tolland Marsh, which he had purchased in 1946. Probably the first development of the marsh dated back to the mid-1700s and Lyle had a lifelong fascination with the ingenious ways our ancestors developed waterpower. Thus, the years spent working with hydroelectric and river projects were some of the most enjoyable of his life. And, he and Don were also able to enjoy many outings together, both far and near; Alaska, Canada, Labrador, Hudson Bay, the Connecticut shore, Cape Cod, and some of the marshes along the eastern seaboard, including many hours in the Tolland Marsh. Lyle was a US Navy Veteran of World War II as a night fighter director.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law Julie and Craig Woods of Tolland, Jill and Denny Hatch of Key West, FL, a daughter-in-law Patricia Thorpe of Ashland, VA, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Laura (Springer) Thorpe, a son Richard Thorpe, his second wife Lois (Negrini) Thorpe, and two sisters Lynn Sullivan and Louise Aldrich.
A Graveside Service with Full Military Honors accorded will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 1 p.m. in South Cemetery, Tolland.
Published in the Hartford Courant on 11/13/2008.
