Gerald Arthur Dailey

  Gerald A. Dailey, 81, of St. Charles, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at Whitewater Health Services in St. Charles.
  Gerald was born Oct. 23, 1937, in Stewartville, to Sidney and Minnie (Nuehring) Dailey. His family moved to Hinckley for a short time before settling at a farm in the Pilot Mound area when he was young. He was baptized and confirmed at Pilot Mound Lutheran Church and graduated from Chatfield High School in 1957.
  Gerald and Janet Stevens were married June 15, 1963. They made their home in St. Charles, where Gerald worked for Carl Fischer and Patterson Quarries. He then went to work for Whitewater Healthcare Center for 37 years in maintenance and housekeeping.
  He enjoyed music, playing by ear, never reading a note. He played bass and rhythm guitar for The Melody Rangers and Whitewater Melody Men from 1966 to 1980, playing at Red’s Dogpatch in Troy, the golf course in Plainview, Katie’s Red Barn, Cly-Mar in Lewiston and Parkway in St. Charles. Gerald kept a beautiful garden, with a passion for keeping it weed free. He frequently enjoyed sitting in his yard, watching the sunset over his well-kept garden. Gerald was a member Faith Lutheran Church and of a St. Charles moped gang, enjoying evening rides around town. He was the oldest in a family of 15, who prided themselves in pranking each other.
  Gerald is survived by his wife, Janet; three children, Barb (Peter) Snyder of St. Charles, Tom Dailey of Rochester and Jim (Nikki) Dailey of St. Charles; six grandchildren, Kelsie, Trent, Madison, Hunter, Bryan and Ariana; a great-grandchild, Zach; and 11 siblings, Anna Wood of Nelson, Wis., Shirley (Lyle) Bartsh of Plainview, Carl (Sandy) Dailey of Winona, Richard (Connie) Dailey of Millville, Brenda Dailey of Winona, Bonnie Blaser of Spring Valley, Raymond (Patty) Dailey of Lewiston, Gary Dailey (Jo) of Rollingstone, Wally (Susan) Dailey of Lake City, Mike (Kay) Dailey of Dakota, and Deb (Harlan) Brandhorst of Hudson, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Brand; and two brothers, Floyd and David.
  Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Charles, with the Rev. Waldemar Gies officiating. Burial will follow in Saratoga Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Service in St. Charles, and one hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Melvin David Harnack

  Melvin David Harnack was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Elgin, to Melvin and Dorathea (Woodward) Harnack. The family moved to Eyota in 1955. Melvin graduated from Dover-Eyota High School in 1961, and then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. On May 8, 1968, he married Janice May Stevens at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. They made there home in Eyota.
  In 1963, he joined the union and worked construction until he started his own construction company, Mel Harnack Construction in 1969. In 1997, he started working with his son, Scott Harnack Landscaping, until retiring in 2012, to enjoy life with his kids and grandkids. Melvin enjoyed fishing, woodworking and shooting pool.
  He is survived by his wife, Janice of Eyota; children, Kim Harnack, Scott (Gina) Harnack and Veronica (Mike) Salerno, all of Eyota; five grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia (Joe) Heins of Eyota.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Dorathea Harnack.
  Funeral service will be held Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Eyota, with the Rev. Mark Woodward officiating. Burial will be in the Elgin Cemetery.
  Visitation will be Sunday, March 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Eyota, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

  Richard Henry Shafer -- Rochester
  ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Richard Henry Shafer will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Macken Funeral Home, with the Rev. Pat Toscak officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
  Mr. Shafer, 52, of Rochester, a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at his home.
He was born May 26, 1949, in Austin. On Aug. 9, 1969, he married Deborah Plank in St. Charles. Mr. Shafer worked for Bekin's Moving and Storage from 1969 to 1985, first as a truck driver and then as warehouse supervisor. He went on to own the local Bekin's Moving and Storage and for three years during that time also operated Shafer Auto Repair. Most recently, he was a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service and operators Courier and Delivery Service. He was a member of Evangel United Methodist Church and was an assistant Cubmaster for five years.
  Survivors include his wife; a son, Derek (Brandy) of Austin; two daughters, Jerol (David) Oldenkamp of Austin and Jayla (Kenneth) Green of Rochester; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, Larry and James (Renae), both of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour before the service Wednesday at Macken Funeral Home.

  Viola Johnson was born on January 27, 1924, in Melville, ND, to the late Bertis & Eva Johnson. She grew up in the Melville/Carrington, ND, area.
  She married Gustave Lee Maas on August 2, 1946, in Moorhead, where they made their home and raised their family.
  She worked as a cook at many local restaurants including The Comstock, The Rex, Warren's, Erie, Jr. and the Red Mill Lounge.
  Viola and her husband were life members of VFW post 1223 in Moorhead and enjoyed listening to the music and dancing there on weekend evenings. She so loved to ride motorcycle with her husband and friends, frequently taking "day trips" to scenic areas in both the Dakotas and Minnesota.
  Mrs. Maas is survived by one daughter, Hazel E. (Larry) Grimley; two sons, Grant E. (Marsha) Maas and Raymond A. (Debbie) Maas; a sister, Charlotte Johnson; grandchildren Michelle, Tawnia, Sean, Carrie and Nathan, Charlotte, Elizabeth "Betsy" and Darin (Sheri) Maas; and three great-grandchildren.
  She was preceded in death by her husband, March 5, 2002, and her parents.
  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends that she loved and that loved her in return.
  A prayer service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2003, at 7:00 P.M. in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, 409 8th Street South in Moorhead. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. The funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Jim Levitt at New Hope Evangelical Free Church, 1132 28th Avenue South, Moorhead, at 1:30 P.M. Monday, February 24, 2003. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo.

  Gustave Lee "Gus" Maas, 80, Moorhead, Minn., died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services, Fargo.
  Mr. Maas was born Jan. 4, 1922, at Edgeley, N.D., the son of Gustave and Clara (Moury) Maas. He grew up in Nortonville, N.D., where he graduated from high school in 1940.
   He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific as a rifle sharpshooter and Army specialty rifleman.
   He married Viola Louise Johnson Aug. 2, 1946, at Moorhead, where they lived. He worked for Withnell Oil Co. and W.W. Wallwork before starting his own business, Gus Maas Trucking, hauling grain from elevators at Arthur, Ayr, Erie, and Gackle, N.D. He retired in 1987, after which he worked at the Travel Mart Convenience Store, Moorhead. He was a life member of the VFW, Moorhead, where he enjoyed listening to music and dancing on weekend evenings. He also enjoyed riding motorcycle, taking trips to areas of the Dakotas and Minnesota, and reading.
  He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Hazel E. Donahue, Moorhead; two sons, Grant E. (Marsha), Charlotte, N.C., and Raymond A. (Debbie), Moorhead; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Johnson, Brownsville, Texas; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Caroline Maas.
  Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, New Hope Evangelical Free Church, Moorhead, with the Rev. Gary Ellingson officiating.
  Prayer service: 7 p.m. today, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

  William J. Aipperspach, 75, Jamestown, North Dakota, died Friday, April 1, 2005 at his home in Jamestown.
  William was born June 6, 1929 in Jamestown, ND, the son of Jerry and Vera (Davey) Aipperspach. He grew up and attended school in the Jamestown area. Bill worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and with his father in the Plaster and Stucco business.
   He married Eileen Siebert on August 1, 1959 in Valley City, ND. He retired in 1969 due to an injury on the railroad.
  Bill is survived by his wife, Eileen, Jamestown, four children, Brad Aipperspach and Jerry Aipperspach, both of Jamestown, Julie (Scott) Lien, Fargo, ND and Rinda Mae, Jamestown and four grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Danny Jo.
  No services will be held.

On August 1, 1959, she married William Aipperspach in Valley City, North Dakota. They lived in Jamestown where Eileen worked in many restaurants.

  Aviation Student Harland Merchant, son of Mrs. Andrew Lanni, 712 1-2 Foots Avenue, has been commended by the Commanding Officer at Niagara University for his aid in rescuing a small child, Jean Gay, who was lost In the Niagara River Gorge.
   The young girl had been missing from her home for two days and it was through the efforts of Harland and two other Aviation Students that she was found and restored to her grateful parents.
  Harland graduated from Jamestown High School with the class of 1942 and was manager of the Kandall Gas Station before entering the-army on April 23, 1943. He went first to Atlantic City, N. J„ for basic training and then was transferred to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. About a month ago he was sent to Niagara University for a pre-flight course leading to a commission in the Army Air Corps.

  Cpl. Harland G. Merchant, husband of Dorothy Wolinski Merchant, 258 Falconer Street, has reported to Lincoln, Noe., after spending a 12-day delay en route with his family and friends. He completed the prescribed course of training as tail-gunner on a B-29 at Las Vegas Flexible Gunnery School. Las Vegas, Nev., on July 7, 1945, and received his wings on July 10, 1945. Previous training as fighter aircraft armorer, was received at the Air Forces Technical School, Buckley Field, Denver, Colo., from where he graduated on Dec. 18, 1943. Further airplane armament training was completed at Lowry Field, Denver, Colo. Corporal and Mrs. Merchant's infant son, Stanley Richard was christened during Corporal Merchant's visit home.


Dorothy Wolinski

  Dorothy Wolinski Merchant, age 94, beloved wife of the late Harland George Merchant, died on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at NHC Healthcare.
  Born January 31, 1923 in Jamestown, NY, she was the daughter of immigrant parents, the late Stanley John and Anna Jodash Wolinski. Mrs. Merchant loved her family and was very active in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. When her children were growing up, she was active in the PTA and served as the club's president at Fletcher Elementary School in Jamestown, NY. She worked for many years as a Sales Clerk for JC Penney. She enjoyed sewing, photography, ballroom dancing and was an accomplished artist. In the Sumter community, she was a member of the Shepard Center and served with Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the St. Anne and St. Jude Catholic Church, where she was a lifetime member of the Catholic Women's Guild.
   In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Genevieve Spataro, Janet DiSabantonio and Helen Francis Wolinski and three granddaughters, Sheila Lynne Merchant, Kimberly Rae Merchant and Amy Nicole Smith.

  The late summer military wedding of Miss Dorothy Wolinski, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley J. Wolinski, 258 Falconer Street, and Air Student Harland G. Merchant, son of Mrs. Andrew Lanni, 712H Foote Avenue, took place at 9 o'clock Saturday morning in the SS. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic Church. Father Stanislaus J. Brzana performed the ceremony at a nuptial high mass. Miss Maie E. Collins, organist, played the traditional wedding music with "Ave Maria" softly during the pledging of the vows.
  The altar was banked in palms and baskets of white gladioli. The lovely bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a white slipper satin gown made princess style, with a sweetheart neckline, long sleeves ending in points over the hands, and a full skirt falling into a long train. Her long flowing veil of white illusion fell from a tiara of seed pearls and orange blossoms. She carried a colonial shower bouquet of white roses. Her only jewelry was a string of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom.
  Miss Helen Wolinski, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor, in a rose taffeta frock with shoulder length rose veil fastened with roses. Her arm bouquet of pink roses was tied with blue tulle. The bridesmaid was Miss Janet Wolinski, another, sister of the bride, wearing an identical gown of powder blue taffeta with a shoulder length blue veil also fastened with roses. Her arm bouquet of pink roses was tied with pink tulle.
  Little Sharon Carney was flower girl, wearing a long yellow taffeta frock and a finger tip veil fastened with yellow roses. She carried a tiny Colonial nosegay.
  The best mans was Edward Sczempka. The usher was Donald Merchant, cousin of the bridegroom. The groom rembered the groomsmen with suitable gifts. The bride's gift to the groom was a crystal Rosary.
  The bride's mother wore a powder blue crepe offset by navy blue accessories, her corsage was pink rosebuds. The groom's mother wore black flowered crepe, With black accessories and a corsage of Talisman roses.
  Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents for the immediate families. A wedding reception followed in the afternoon with Mrs. Jeoffry Wilkinson and Mrs, Henry Carney as
aides.
  The bride's going away outfit was a powder blue gaberdine suit, with navy blue accessories. She is a graduate of J.H.S., and is employed as a photographer at the G. C. Murphy Company. The groom is a graduate of J.H.S., and is an Army Air Student stationed at Niagara University.

  Miss Renee M. Robillard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Robillard of Broadalbin, became the bride of S. Richard Merchant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harland G. Merchant of Jamestown, at Nuptial Mass., at 11 this morning at St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin. Rev. Charles Gaffigan, assistant pastor, performed the double ring ceremony.
  Mrs. Adolph Konieczyn of Broadalbin played wedding music.
  The bride, given in marriage by her father wore a white gown, designed by the bride and fashioned by the bride's mother. The peau de sole floor length gown featured a lowered round neckline accented with re-embroidered Swiss appliques and seed pearls. The Chapel train fell from the Empire waistline accented front and back with small bows. The modified Aline skirt and long sleeves, ending in bridal points, were both adorned with the same appliques. Her brief bouffant English silk illusion veil fell from a pearl tiara. She carried a cascade bouquet of white roses, stephanotis and ivy.
  Miss Denise E. Robillard of Broadalbin, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore a yellow chiffon over taffeta floor length gown with long chiffon sleeves, rolled satin collar, Empire waist and accented front and back with yellow satin bows. She wore a yellow satin bow hat and carried a yellow and green daisy cascade bouquets.
  Miss Terry A. Merchant of Jamesville sister of the bridegroom, was bridesmaid and Michele M. Robillard of Broadalbin, sister of the bride, was junior bridesmaid. Rhonda Baran of Jamestown was flower girl.
  The attendants wore gowns similar to that of the maid of honor, with the bridesmaids gown the same color. The junior bridesmaid gown was mint green and the flower girl's was blue. They carried cascade bouquets of daisies matching their gowns, and the flower girl carried a basket of yellow, green, and white daisies.
  Richard Pearson of Jamestown was best man. Brian Dinneen of Warsaw, (Wyoming County) was an usher, and Peter J. Robillard of Broadalbin, brother of the bride, was ringbearer.
  The mother of the bride wore a turquoise crepe sheath with matching accessories, and a white orchid corsage.
  The mother of the bridegroom wore a coral brocade jacket and dress with coral accessories and a white orchid corsage.
  A reception was held following the ceremony at Robbi's Restaurant in Broadalbin with about 60 guests attending from Broadalbin, Gloversville, Amsterdam, Troy, Schenectady, Jamestown, Olean, (Cattaraugus County) Lindenhurst, (Suffolk County) Albany, Buffalo, Oakfield, (Genesee County) Elnora, Rochester, Locust Valley, Endicott, Loudonville and from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Ohio.
  For a wedding trip to Niagara Falls and Ames, Iowa, the bride wore a brown 3-piece double knit suit with white lapel, collar and blouse and brown accessories. Her corsage was white roses.
  They will reside in Ames, Iowa after Friday.
  The bride is a graduate of Broadalbin Central High School and the State University Agricultural and Technical College at Alfred. She was formerly employed at the Mountain Clinic Hospital at Olean.
  The bridegroom is a graduate of Jamestown High School and College of Ceramics at Alfred. He will be studying for his master's degree at Iowa State University.
  A pre-nuptial shower was given by the bridegroom's family in Jamestown.

  She was born March 14, 1924, in Jamestown, the daughter of Vance and Francis Kane Butts.
  She was a 1942 graduate of Chautauqua High School, and had been employed by the former Hills Department Store, JC Penny's and WT Grant Department Store as a sales clerk. She was a member of John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW Auxiliary and the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion Auxiliary.
  She enjoyed knitting and liked her pets. She will be missed by her many friends and loved ones
  She is survived by 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
  She was preceded in death her husband, Milton Stahl Sr., whom she married April 21, 1946, and who died May 22, 1979; two sons: Milton Stahl Jr. in 1998 and Merle Stahl in 1958; two daughters: Roberta Johnson in 1999 and Arline Pratt in 2000; a brother, Edson Butts; and a sister Mary Bush.
  The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt, Lutheran Retirement Home chaplin, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ashville.

Center, formerly of 2263 Lennox St, died at 4:38 a.m. on Wednesday,April 30, 2008, in the WCA Hospital.A Jamestown resident most of her life, she was born Feb. 27, 1924, in Meadville,Pa., the daughter of James and Viola Shady Coon.
  She was the widow of Donald G. Stahl, whom she married June 1946 and died June 24, 1988.Mrs. Stahl was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was a clerk at Gray's Drug Store for 11 years and at Clark's Drug Store for 18 years, retiring in 1987.She attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was a member of Henry Mosher Post 638 American Legion Auxiliary, Falconer, John W. Tiffany Post 53 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Women of the Moose Chapter 134, Falconer, AARP, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, and Women's International Bowling Congress.
 Surviving are three sons:Jerry D. (Bobbie) Stahl and Thomas L. Stahl, both of Jamestown, and Gregory P. Stahl of San Antonio, Texas;two grandchildren: Jerri Ann Stahl of Jamestown and Toni Marie Carvella of Kokomo, Miss.; a sister Dorothy Hunt of Jamestown; and a companion, Robert Lawson, with whom she made her home of Jamestown. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Donald W. Stahl; a sister, Joyce Coon; and three brothers: Wayne, James and David Coon.

   Mr. and Mrs. Merle Garfield, 137 Broadhead Avenue, announce the engagement of their elder daughter. Helen, to Robert Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Mason, 71 Elam Avenue. She is a senior nurse at the W.C.A. Hospital Training School to graduate in September. They are both graduates of J.H.S., Miss Garfield in 1944, and Mr. Mason in 1941. He is presently employed by the Swanson Machine Corporation.

  Mr. and Mrs. Merle W. Garfiled, 137 Broadhead Avenue announce the marrage of their daughter, Helen R. Garfield, W.C.W. Hospital staff nurse, to Robert Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Mason, 71 Elam Avenue, on March 19. Rev. Dr. C. E. Benson performed the ceremony at 4 P.M. in the First Lutheran parsonage, in the presence of 12 guests, members of the immediate family.
  They were attended by Ivar Samuelson, and the bride's sister Miss Rugh Garfield, who wore a gray gabardine suit with a corsage of rosebuds.
  Both mothers chose navy blue ensambles with red rose corsage bouquets. A wedding supper followed at the Hendrickson Tearoom. Mrs. Lawrence Hendrickson and Mrs. William Hendrickson, aunts of the bride prisided at the table.
  Mr. and Mrs. Mason left for a short wedding trip and are at home at 139 South Main Street. They are both graduates of J.H.S., she in 1944 and he in 1941. During the war Mr. Hendrickson served three years in the Army Signal Corps with 21 months overseas, and is now employed at the Swanson Machine Corporation.
  The bride was graduated from the W.C.A. Hospital Training School of Nursing in 1948, and is presently a surgical staff nurse. Pere-nuptual affairs in her honor were given by Mr. Merle Garfield, Mrs. Joseph Anderson, Mrs. Bernard Mason and Miss Ruth Garfield. Out-of-town wedding guests were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mason of Cassadaga.
