Utica's safety commissioner, J. Carroll Hamlin, yesterday imposed a six-month probation on Patrolman Joseph Dea Vosburgh, suspended from the force on Wednesday after being caught in a gambling raid.
Vosburgh was returned to duty after a closed hearing in Hamlin's office.
Hamlin also suspended Vosburgh for a month without pay, but deferred execution of the sentence for six months. He said he would act on the suspension after receiving a report from Police Chief Vincent LaFleur in November.
"If the chief recommends it, I'll remove this blot from Vosburg's record," Hamlin said. He pointed out that Vosburgh has "a spotless record covering 31 years on the force."
Hamlin added that Vosburgh has been commended for his work on numerous occasions.
Vosburgh was one of six men caught in a raid at the Round House Garage, 701 Noyes St., Utica. He was off-duty at the time, but was suspended for failing to report an alleged gambling activity. Hamlin said Vosburgh violated a directive issued last month. The directive told police they were responsible for reporting any vice or gambling in the city.
