Herkimer - Edward C. Land, 23, son of Spencer Land, 316 South Washington St., has accepted a position with the "pioneer" constructing the Army's Alaskan-Canadiean highway.
Land has signed a six months' contract and has left for Seattle.
He will do carpenter work, and before leaving was employed in the Remington Arms Plant, Ilion. His wife and daughter will live with her parents until he returns.

Gertrude Blanche Mang, age 90, of West Main Street, passed away on Thursday evening, Sept. 19, 2013, in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side.
She was born of June 24, 1923, in Jordanville, daughter of the late Ernest and Golda House Eggleston. A lifelong area resident she was raised in the town of Columbia and was educated in Richfield Springs High School. On Aug. 10, 1940 she was united in marriage with William Mang in Richfield Springs. They shared a devoted union of over fifty-nine years until his passing on March 25, 2000. In 2001 Mrs. Mang moved to Mohawk where she has resided since.
Except for working a short time at the Palmer House in Richfield Springs, Gertrude devoted her entire life to her home, husband and children. In her leisure time she enjoyed watching soap operas, listening to country music, canning, camping and snowmobiling. To all who knew her she was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her sense of humor and unforgettable smile will be greatly missed.
Surviving are three daughters, Kathy Schultz of Mohawk, Judy Sickler and her husband Larry, Robin Mergenthaler and her husband David all of Ilion; six grandchildren, Larry Sickler and his wife Joann, Tammy Morgan, Timothy Schultz and his wife Michele, Sheila Hosler, David Mergenthaler and his wife Colette, Shelly Cole and her husband Michael; four great grandsons; ten great granddaughters; one great-great grandson; and one great-great granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband William she was preceded in death by her son, Gary Mang; a grandson, Daniel Mergenthaler; two brothers, Elvin and Donald Eggleston; and a son-in-law, James Schultz.
Calling hours for Mrs. Mang will be on Wednesday from 1 until 3 p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. Funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Wollaber, pastor, of Morning Star Ministries, Ilion and Frankfort, officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarville Cemetery.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Elvin C. Eggleston, of 200! Montidello Street, Richfield Spings, passed away last evening, January 30 at Mohawk Valley General Hospital, Ilion, where he was a patient for one day.
Born in Cullen, NY on March 15, 1927 the son of Ernest F. and Golda D. House Eggleston. He served in WWII in the Army Air Corps. He was a 25 year employee of Univac.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Clements Eggleston, three sons, James E and Thomas E. both of Richfield Springs and Gerald E. PC2, stationed in Thurston, Scotland, on brother, Donald E. Eggleston of Ilion, one sister, Mrs. William Gertrude Mang of Columiba Center, one grandson.
Reposing at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs, on Wednesday February 1 frpm 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service Thursday 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. Spring burial in Mohawk Cemetery.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS _ Elizabeth Eggleston, 84, of Elm Street, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
She was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Paines Hollow, a daughter of the late Louis John and Hazel Annabel Scott Clements. A lifelong area resident, she was raised and educated in Richfield Springs.
On May 29, 1948, she was united in marriage to Elvin Carlton Eggleston in St. John's Episcopal Church. It was a loving and devoted union of 30 years until his passing Jan. 30, 1978.
For many years she had worked locally as a nurse's aide, retiring in 1963.
Betty had a strong belief in God and was a faithful member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, where she had served as past president of the Women of St. John's. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing bingo and had an extensive collection of Betty Boop memorabilia.
She will always be remembered as an outgoing person, who was strong-willed but had a heart of gold.
She was happiest when surrounded by her family. She enjoyed her many travels throughout the country and abroad with her sons. Her love will be forever cherished and she will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her three sons and their wives, James and Jennifer Eggleston of Easton, Pa., Gerald and Terri Eggleston of Gilbert, Ariz., and Thomas and Betty Eggleston of Richfield Springs; two sisters, Louise Ainsworth and Nancy Conkling and her husband, William, all of Herkimer; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Mang of Mohawk; a brother-in-law, Donald Eggleston of Ilion; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, Elvin, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Clements Jr. and Frederick Clements; and a sister, Florence Loomis.
Funeral services with Holy Eucharist from the Book of Common Prayer will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector, will officiate. Interment will follow in Mohawk Cemetery.
The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, to receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
As an alternative to flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to St. John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs or the Richfield Springs Rescue Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The ceremony took place in St. John's chapel at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Roscoe C. Hatch officiating.
The bride,.who was given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white satin, with train, a beaded coronet, and finger tip veil and carried an arm bouquet of white sweet peas and pink carnations.
Mrs. Donald Scott of llion, the matron of honor, wore yellow mousseline de soif, over satin and carried sweet peas of various shades.
Mr. Scott was best man. The ushers were Lewis Clements, Jr. and Donald Eggleston.

The bride's mother wore, a black flowered satin dress of street length, black hat and black accessories and a corsage of red roses.
The groom's mother was dressed in pink with a white hat, white accessories and a corsage of.white roses.
One hundred guests were present at the reception held at the home of of the bride.
Out-of-town guests attended from Ilion, Mohawk, Binghamton, Clifton Springs and Waterloo.
Mrs. Eggleston is a graduate of the Herkimer High school and is employed at the Richfield Springs Sportswear company.
Mr. Eggleston attended the local Central school and is employed in the Remington Arms, llion. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1945 and received his. training at Keesler Field, Biloxi, Miss. He was stationed at Kinko, Korea where he was Paymaster, in the finance department.
He received his discharge at Fort Dix in April, 1947, with the rank of sergeant.
Mr. and Mrs. Eggleston on their return from Niagara Falls, will reside in an apartment in the home of the groom's parents.

James Eggleston, Richfield Springs, nephew of the groom was ring bearer.
The bride was attired in a gown of white organdy with a Juliet cap and a fingertip veil, and carried a white prayer book with an orchid and carnations.
The maid of honor wore a gown of yellow tulle with a matching head piece trimmed with lilies of the valley. The bridesmaids were attired in matching gowns of tulle of pink and blue with matching headpieces and carried colonial bouquets of asters and carnations.
A reception for abobut 200 guests was held at the home of the bride, after which the couple left on a trip to the Catskills.
The bride was entertained at prenuptlal events given by Mrs. Mabel Scott, Mrs. Pauline Stark and Miss Phylis O'Shea of llion.
The bride attended llion High School. The groom graduated from the Mohawk Central School, class of '54. Mr. Eggleston is now employed by the Lane's Construction, Fort Herkimer.
The couple will reside at 4 Division street, llion, New York.

Born in Little Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Gertrude (Seedes) Miller. Eileen moved to Syracuse in 1947. She was predceased by her husband, Michael in 1997.

Michael Kendrat, 72, of Shaver Ave., North Syracuse, NY, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997 at his home. He was born in Syracuse and lived in the area all his life. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He worked in the grocery business for 38 years, retiring from P&C in 1985. He was a life member of VFW Post 4612 in Little Falls, NY. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Eileen; two sons, Mark of New Jersey and David of Liverpool, NY; a brother, William of Minoa, NY; a sister, Mary Porcynaluk of Texas; and six grandchildren.Services are 8:30 pm today at the Sears-Middleton Funeral Home, North Syracuse. - Dorathea Burney
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mrs. Dorathea H. Burney, 86, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Otsego Manor.
She was born Jan. 17, 1919, in the town of German Flats, the daughter of Charles and Lydia (Lewis) Henrickson.
On Sept. 6, 1941, she married Claude A. Burney in Union Center. He predeceased her Sept. 17, 1997.
She was employed at Univac in Ilion for several years. She was past member of the Order of the Eastern Star Arbutus Chapter 317, Richfield Springs, where she held many offices.
Mrs. Burney is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sharyn Burney of Madison, Wis.; three daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Burney, Sharon and Floyd Eckler of Richfield Springs, and Patricia Burney of Cooperstown; five grandchildren, Mary and Jamie Hardee of Rome, Michael Eckler of Alexandria Bay, and David and Sarah Burney of Madison, Wis. She also leaves two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Theodore and Edward Henrickson, and a sister, Louise Prentice.
Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 23, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at a later date.
There will be no public calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Burney’s memory may be made to the Richfield Springs Fire Department and Emergency Squad.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

GLOVERSVILLE - A 45year-old father was fatally injured in an auto accident early yesterday afternoon on old Route 29, off Route 29 in the Town of Mayfield, and died about 6 p.m. at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, where he was transferred from Littauer Hospital.
Gordon Gallup of RD Gloversville was standing on the highway, giving directions to a truck driver when his young son started across the highway. The father started toward the son to push him off the highway and was struck by an oncoming auto operated by Edward Dybos, 52, of Philadelphia, Pa.
The accident was investigated by Troopers R. L. Townsend of the Mayfield State Police substation.
It was reported that no charges were filed against the driver of the auto.
The body reportedly was released to the Cole Funeral Home of Johnstown late last night.
State Police said the investigation is continuing. Mr. Gallup sustained a concussion and laceration of the head, it was reported.
The initial investigation reveals that the youngster who started across the road is 2 years old.

WELLS — Tuesday afternoon At 4 a very pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Davis when their daughter Alene Davis became the bride of Gordon R. Gallup, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Gallup of Gloversville.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a pink gown, veil of pink net and a corsage of white roses.
The bridesmaid, Mrs. Doris Garber, sister of the bride, wore a blue gown and a corsage of pink roses. Stanley Garber, brother-in-law of the bride, was the best man.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Franklin W. Worden in front of a lighted Christmas tree. The home was decorated in holiday colors and balsam boughs filled with silver ice-cicles.
The bride's mother wore navy with pink roses.
Following the ceremony a buffet lunch was served and a wedding cake cut by the couple.
Guests were present from Mohawk and Gloversville.
The bride's traveling outfit was a maroon velvet dress with a grey coat with black accessories. After a short undisclosed trip the young couple will reside with the bride's parents until summer.
Mrs. Gallup was the guest of honor at a shower last week at the home of Miss Jean Craig.

Steven Westerling, Broadalbin RD, was the best man. The mother of the bride was attired in a shimmering gold dress with a black lace over-dress.
Her accessories were black and she wore a yellow and white carnation corsage. The mother of the bridegroom wore a green bonded knit dress with brown accessories and a yellow and white pompon corsage. A reception was held at the bride's home following the ceremony. Broadalbin ... Mrs. June Duesler was guest of honor at a surprise post-nuptial shower held recently, at the home of Mrs. Morris Hare, Broadalbin. Games were played and prizes awarded. Mrs. Duesler was remembered with a number of gifts.
Refreshments were served to about 20 persons in attendance.
Mrs. Duesler, the former Miss June Gallup, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Gallup of Gloversville RD 2, was united in marriage to Mark Duesler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Demarest of Broadalbin RD 1, on Nov. 15.

GLOVERSVILLE — Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Barbara Ann Lawton, 32, of Gloversville RD 2, who died unexpectedly at 7:15. a.m. yesterday at her home, are being completed by the Walrath and Bushouer Funeral Home.
She was born July 16, 1934, in Montgomery County and moved to Wells with her family when she was seven years old. She attended Wheelerville School at Caroga Lake and,also attended Wells Central School.
Mrs. Lawton was married in 1955 to Alpheais Lawton Jr., who survives. She was employed by the Espey Manufacturing and Electronics Corp.
Mrs. Lawton was a member of the Wells Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Kennyetto Bowling League of Broadalbin.
Survivors in addition to her husband are one son, Randy, and one daughter, Tambra, both at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Davis of Palmetto, Fla.; one brother, Willard Davis of Broadalbin; three sisters, Mrs. June Daneburgh of Palmetto, Mrs. Doris Garber of Gloyersville RD 2, and Mrs. Gordon Gallup of Broadalbin; also neices, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
