24089. Robert Irven Button Porter
- His birth name was Button. His birth parents are unknown. (Nancy Porter)
- After Matilda ("Tillie") died in 1967, they were cleaning out the house and discovered a letter addressed to him from a sister he never knew he had. The letter was dated 1942. My parents attempted to find her to no avail. They also sent for a possible birth certificate from Pennsylvania but not knowing what his "real" name was made that impossible. Also, adoption records were difficult to access back then and even now local court houses are loath to give them up. I was unable to find records in Cortland county and the people there were not the least bit helpful.
Interestingly enough, the 1930 Fed. Census where he is 2 1/2yo living with Irven & Tillie in Preble enumerates him as an "adopted son". I did a fair amount of research on his sister who signed the letter with the name Norma McCabe. I found her in the household of Norman & Hazel McCabe in Painted Post, NY. The 1930 Fed Census for them names her as Edna J. Button, a "relative to be adopted". This was a big breakthrough because now I know that his biological surname was Button. I then did extensive research on the McCabes but nowhere did I run across a Button family. The one thing that ties them is that Matilda, my father, Hazel (DeVoe) McCabe & Edna Button were all born in Pennsylvania.
