  Ilion-Herkimer
   Shirley M. Elthorp, age 71, of 360 Protection Ave., Herkimer, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009, at her home, with her loving family by her side.
 She was born to Jacob and Frances (Hogaboome) Newberry in Amsterdam, NY, on December 6, 1937. Shirley attended valley elementary schools and Little Falls High School.
  Shirley was united in marriage to Charles Elthorp, Sr., on September 1, 1956, a very loving and blessed union of 38 years until Charles’ death in February of 1995. Shirley was of the Methodist faith.
  Shirley was a past member of the Ilion Women of the Moose. She was a Senior Soldier of the Herkimer Salvation Army. She was also a member of the Herkimer Salvation Army’s Home League and League of Mercy. She was also a life time member of the Herkimer Polish Community Home.
  Shirley was very involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren very much.
Shirley is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and James Hawkins, of Mohawk, and Beverly and Richard Paugh, Jr., of Frankfort, and five sons and their wives, Charles, Jr., and Melissa, of Ilion, Robert and Windy, of Mohawk, Terry and Judy, of Mohawk, Deven and Beth, of Mohawk, and Landon and Shelly, of Frankfort. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Nicole Roberts and her husband, Christopher, Shawna Loomis and her husband, Jason, Mikayla Prastio and her husband, Joseph, James (Jay) Hawkins, Thomas and Tricia Paugh, and Jaclyn, Jennifer, Tabitha, Samantha, Alan, Brittany, Brandon and Adam Elthorp; also eight great-grandchildren, Amanda Loomis, Giana Prastio, Justin Roberts, Dakota McCaw, Katlyn Gould, Seth and Paige White, and Kimberly Aldred; and several stepgrandchildren. She leaves three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ervin and Betty Newberry, of Mohawk, Clarence, Jr., and Phyllis Guyer, of Mohawk, and Everett Newberry, of Herkimer, and many other in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley also leaves many friends and two special friends, Alma Hysack and Sally Dennis, of Herkimer.
  She was predeceased by her loving husband, Chuck; her parents; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Richard Rogers, Sr., and Betty and Frank Johnston; a brother, James and his wife, Rosemarie Newberry; her niece, Linda Perri; and her in-laws, Robert, Gertrude and George Elthorp, and Betty Jean White.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Major James Smith, of the Salvation Army, officiating. Interment will be in Frankfort Center Cemetery, where Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband, Charles.

  HERKIMER-ILION – Herriete (Elthorp) E. Feldbrugge, age 76, of Herkimer, formerly of Ilion, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford, with her family by her side.
  She was born on October 4, 1937, in Mohawk, the daughter of Robert and Gertrude (Mosher) Elthorp, and graduated from West Canada School. On November 6, 1976, she was married to Frank C. Feldbrugge in Herkimer. He died on November 26, 1984. Herriete was employed at Eggers, Caryl & Corrigan in Utica. She was a member of Cold Brook United Methodist Church and past President of its Believers Group. Herriete also was a member and past Treasurer of AARP Chapter #1410, coordinator of its Widowed Persons Service and volunteer at Catholic Charities. She was also a director at the Herkimer County Fair Assoc.
  Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Kimber Lee Elthorp, of Mohawk, and Kitty E. Feisthamel, of Herkimer, and her husband, Edward, of Frankfort; three grandsons, Michael, Anthony and Zachary Elthorp; one granddaughter, Brandy Feisthamel; two stepsons, Steven and Frank Feldbrugge; three stepdaughters, Sabrina Weller, Robin Bennett and Marilla Stanley; two sisters, Mary Edwards, of Herkimer, and Roberta Ann Holmes, of Florida; four brothers, Alfred Elthorp, of Herkimer, Richard Elthorp and his wife, Gerry, of Frankfort, Donald Elthorp and his wife, Carol, of Mohawk, and William “Bill” Elthorp and his wife, Carolyn, of Mohawk; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
  She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Charles and George Elthorp; and her sister, Betty Jean White.
  Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion (old Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort), with Pastor Genett Timlin, of Cold Brook United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer, next to her husband Frank.
  Calling hours are Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the funeral home service.

  Dolgeville - Richard N. Miller, 65, of 36 North Helmer Avenue, died Sunday at Little Falls Hospital after a heart attack.
  A native of Salisbury, Mr. Miller was an antique dealer most of his life and for the last 11 years owned and operated the Miller Saw Service of Dolgeville.
  He was a member of St. Joseph's Church of Dolgeville.
  Survivors are his wife, the former Agnes Jordan; two daughters, Mrs. Veronica King and Mrs. Catherine Gordon, both of Albany; three brothers, John Miller of Henrietta, James Miller of Florida and Bernard Miller of Little Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jones of St. Johnsville and Mrs. Margaret Bilinski of Dolgeville, and four grandchildren.

Miller, Jr., of Salisbury, was the guest of honor at another miscellaneous shower, given by Miss Anna O'Connell, at her home in Burwell Street. Pinochle was enjoyed and the first prize was given to Mrs. Arthur McLaughlin; low, Miss Jordan. Pink and white were used to decorate the table and a delicious lunch was served. Miss Gladys Kiely was also hostess at a shower recently in honor of Miss Jordan at her home in Ward Street. The bride to be was showered with lovely gifts at each function.

  A nuptial Mass was celebrated by Father Flanagan. They were attended by Miss Amge O'Connell, this city, and James Miller, brother of the groom. Salisbury.
  The bride wore white crepe with hat to match and carried roses. The maid of honor was gowned in a frock of pink crepe with corresponding hat and she carried pink roses. -----
  --- at Three Islands, Newport. After which Mr. and Mrs. Miller left for a northern motor trip.
  Mrs. Miller is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jordan, Richfield Springs, bur has been making her home in this city for several years.
  The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Miller, Salisbury. He is employed by the Standard Oil Company in Fonda, where the couple will live.

Miss Miller is a 1952 graduate of Dolgeville Central School and of St. Mary's hospital School of Nursing. She is a granddaughter of the late Frank and Catherine Jordan of this village, her mother being the former Agnes Jordan, also she is a niece of Mrs. Philip Byrnes of Richfield.

  James R. Miller, 64, formerly of Salisbury Center, who has been residing in Orlando, Fla. since 1968, died Thursday in Hudson River State Hospital, Poughkeepsie.
  Born in Salisbury on Dec. 4, 1910, he was the son of Richard and Esther McCarthy Miller. He was married to Anna Prytula May 17, 1941. She died several years ago.
  While in the Salisbury Center area, he operated a farm for several years. He was a custodian for the  County Court House in Orlando.
  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Everett (Mary Ann) Walrath, Salisbury Center; two brothers, John Miller, Henrietta, and Bernard Miller, Little Falls; two sisters, Mrs, Walter (Margaret) Bilinski, Dolgeville, and Mrs. Mary Jones, St. Johnsville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
  A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, Dolgeville, with the Rev. Edmund H. Long, as the celebrant. Interment was made in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Salisbury.
  Arrangements were in charge of the Roberts Funeral Home, Dolgeville.

  Margaret A. Bilinski, 96, of Salisbury, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, February 23, 2012, at Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, with her loving family by her side.
 Margaret was born on December 17, 1915 at the family homestead in the Papermill District, Salisbury Center, New York. She was the daughter of the late, Richard and Esther (McCarthy) Miller. She attended school in the Papermill District and graduated from Dolgeville High School with the Class of 1934.
   Upon graduation, she went to work for the Menge Shoe Corporation and later at Eastern Footwear Corporation, where she was the private secretary for the president of the company. On April 21, 1945, she was married to Sgt. Walter Bilinski of the U.S. Marine Corps. at St. Bridget Church in Salisbury, New York. It was a marriage shared with love for 43 years until his passing on April 4, 1988.
  Margaret and Walter owned and operated Corn Hill Grocery in Dolgeville, New York for 21 years. Shortly thereafter, she and Walter worked at the Daniel Green Shoe Company from 1969 to 1974. In 1996, Margaret moved with her son, Stanley and his wife Linda, to the house she was born in on Military Road in Salisbury Corners, New York.
   In her retirement, Margaret wrote three books, the first being, The Alpha to the Omega, the second was Love Letters which was a compilation of letters between Walter and Margaret that was exchanged while Walter was serving in World War II. He was discharged on September 17, 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart. Her third book was called Lifes Challenges.
  Margaret was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Josephs Church in Dolgeville, New York. For many years she was a member of the Rosary Society and also a member of the Salisbury Historical Society.
  Margarets family, faith and heritage were of utmost importance in her life. Her most precious moments were those spent with the ones she loved. Margaret will be greatly missed and will be remembered lovingly by her family and all who knew her. Margaret is survived by her beloved children, two sons, Richard and his wife, Frankie of Louisville, KY, Stanley Bilinski and his wife, Linda of Salisbury, NY, a daughter Louise Leonard and her husband Doc, of Richfield Springs, NY; seven special grandchildren, Richard Bilinski of TX, Master Sergeant USAF (Retired) Steven Bilinski and his wife, Margo of UT, William Bilinski and his wife, Kristen of KY, Michael Bilinski and his wife, Kathryn of Dolgeville, NY, Joanne Zilkowski and her husband, Daniel of Dolgeville, NY, Chief Petty Officer, USN Stephen Leonard and his wife, Desirae of FL, and Gregory Leonard and his wife, Megan of MA; 10 great-grandchildren, Courtney Bilinski, Kara and Leah Zilkowski, Nathan, Katelyn and Blake Bilinski, Emma and Jared Bilinski, Camryn and Cody Leonard; a beloved sister, Mary Jones of Fort Plain, NY; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by four brothers, Richard, James, John, and Bernard Miller.

  DOLGEVILLE - Miss Louise E Bilinski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Bilinski, Dolgeville, was commissioned as a second lieutenant recently in the Women's Army Corps in a ceremony at her home.
  Capt. Cherie A. Iivingston of Albany, WAC recruiter for the Johnstown-Oneonta area, officiated at the commissioning.
  A 1972 graduate of the State University at Oneonta with a B.S. degree in secondaty education and social sciences, Miss Bilinski has since served as assistant dormitory director at the university. She was graduated in 1968 from Dolgeville Central School.
  Miss Bilinski will report on Jan. 8 for 18 weeks of officers basic training at Ft. MacClellan, Ala.
  In order to qualify for the direct commission program, a woman must be a college graduate and pass rigid physical and moral qualifications.
  Benefits of the program include a starting salary of $530 per month, medical and dental care and 30 days of paid vacation.
  Miss Bilinski, while attending the state university, served as assistant treasurer of the student Senate. She was also a recipient of the Alpha Kappa Phi memorial scholarship award for extra-curricular activities.

  Raymond F. Jones, 59, of 37 Green street, Mohawk, died Wednesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica, following a short illness.
  Born in Utica on Dec. 2, 1918, he was the son of Mrs. Myrtle Simpson Brown, Mohawk and the late Frederick Jones. He was previously married to the former Mary Miller of Dolgeville.
  He was first employed in the Salisbury area working on farms and later was a machine operator for Arkell and Smith, Canajoharie. He was last employed by Santos Construction, Gloversville.
   He was of the Catholic faith. Survivors in addition to his mother are a son, Raymond F. Jones, Jr., St. Johnsville; a daughter, Miss Barbara Jones, Auburn; two brothers, Robert S. Jones, Herkimer and Donald Jones, Dolgeville; a sister, Mrs. C. Herbert (Thelma) Johnson, Fort Plain and several nieces and nephews.
   A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, Dolgeville, with the Rev. Edmund H. Long, as the celebrant. Interment was made in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Salisbury.

  Newport — Mrs. Helen Rath, 45, a native of Dolgeville, of Wayne, N.J., died Aug. 6 in Ulster County near Kingston,
  She was born in Dolgeville, daughter of Ellis and Marjorie McCarthy Tompkins.
  She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Emmanuel (Suzanna) Gorman, North Arlington, Va., and Miss Gail Rath, Wayne, N.J.; two sons, Charles and Ellis; her mother and a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Teeling, all of Wayne, and a brother, Carl, Cold Brook.
  The funeral will be at 11 tomorrow from the Autenrith Funeral Home with the Rev. Russell Little, pastor of Newport Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in
Dolgeville Cemetery.

  WEST GROVE, PA. - Carl R Tompkins, age 64, of 224 Penn Ave., Oxford, Pa, died November 2, 1988 in Southern Chester County Medical Center, after a brief illness.
  He was born in Little Falls, N.Y. September 7, 1924, the son of the late Marjorie E. McCarthy and Ellis K. Tompkins. He was raised in Dolgeville and Cold Brook, N.Y. Mr. Tompkins served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was an active member and past Post Commander of the American Legion Adirondack Post #1118, Cold Brook. He was active as a Manager and Coach in the Kuyahoora Valley Little League in Poland, N.Y. He has resided in Oxford, Pa. for the past 18 months, previously residing,in the Washington, D.C. suburban area for 20 years.
  He is survived by two sons, Robert of Oxford, Pa., and David of Waldorf, Maryland; one sister, Carolyn Teeling, of Wayne, N.J.; three granddaughters.
   Graveside services at the Dolgeville Cemetery on Saturday, November 12 at 11 am. Roberts Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.

C. A. Moulton and the attendants were Carolyn Tompkins, twin sister of the bridegroom and Gustave I. Carlson of this village. The bride wore a white wool afternoon dress and orchid Cortege. Her attendant wore a lavender wool afternoon dress with corsage of sweet peas.
  Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bridegrooms parents. About 50 guests attended and the tables were  decorated in yellow.
  The bride is a graduate of Union Springs High school and is employed it the Eastern Footewear. Tht bridegroom is a graduate of Dolgeville Hign school and operates the furm of his late father
Ellis Tompkins.
  Following a wedding trip to Syracuse and Auburn the young couple will reside at the farm.
  The bridesmaid received as a gift a cameo bracelet and the best man was given a billfold. Pre-nuptial showers included those given by Miss Carolyn Tompkins, Mrs. Minnie Loucks and the Misses Mary and Margaret Miller.

  Donald A. McCarthy, passed away June 8, 2008 surrounded by his loving family following a short courageous battle with acute lymphomic leukemia.
  Donald was born in Remsen, N.Y. January 22, 1922, the son of Archibald and Ruth (Shibley) McCarthy. He was drafted into the Army Air Corps during WW II, where he served in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged January 19, 1946. He spent most of his life as a mechanic, autobody repairman. He was predeceased by his first wife, Pauline, with whom they had one daughter, Kathleen. He married Laura Lillian Morehouse on June 13, 1965. He was predeceased by her on June 9, 1995. He is survived by his children, Ray and Janette (Miller), Deadra and Ian Dunbar, Melissa McCarthy, Dean and Monette (Gemena) Donald McCarthy Jr., Ruth Tawfik, and his adopted son, Joseph. He is also survived by his siblings, Alfred, James and Shirley as well as his grandchildren, Owen, Brody, Nicole, Shane, Chase, Eric, Danielle, Brittney, Anthony, Bridgette, Joshua; and a great-granddaughter, Skyler.
  There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Lake Pleasant Grace United Methodist Church from 1-3 p.m.
  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make donations in Donald’s memory to VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, N.Y.


Marriage Notes for Donald A McCarthy and Pauline O'Brien

 - Wedding Announcement (The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Tuesday, February 22, 1949)
  The marriage of Miss Pauline O'Brien, daughter of Mrs. Olive O'Brien of this village, and Donald McCarthy, Speculator, son of Mrs. A. J. McCarthy, of Dolgeville, was performed on February 14, at 8 P. M. in the Methodist parsonage in Speculator. Rev. Frederick B. Grim performed the double ring ceremony. The attendants were Miss Janice Brown and Ernest Spandau, both of Dolgeville.
  The bride is e graduate of St. Johnsville Central School and the New York State College for Teachers, at Oneonta. She is sixth grade teacher in the Union Free school in the Dolgeville Central School.
  Mr. McCarthy attended schools in Salisbury and Dolgeville, and served in the air corps during World War II. He was in the Pacific theater of war for three years. He now is in the lumber business in Speculator.
  The young couple took a northern wedding trip, and spent the week-end here. Mrs. McCarthy will resume her teaching position in Dolgeville on Wednesday, after the Washington's birthday vacation. They will reside in a new home in Speculator.

  Mr. and Mrs. Donald McCarthy, Lake Pleasant are parents of a daughter born Friday evening in Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. Mrs. McCarthy is the former Miss Pauline O'Brien of this village. Until her marriage she was a teacher in the Dolgeville Central School.
