Autobiography of Jean Thompson (aka Mom, Mimi, Grandma Jean, Aunt Jean)
Not everyone can boast of having their first sleigh ride behind a team of horses at the age of 10 days or thereabouts. My family lived in the country and in the winter the roads were plowed to about two miles from my home. So about a week before I was expected, my father took my mother by sleigh and team to a town about six miles away. She was to take the trolley to Ilion and a taxi to her sister's on upper Otsego Street. However, my mother felt fine when she got to Ilion, so she walked to her sister's home. That night, my uncle had to get the doctor and he came to the house and took my mother to the hospital and I arrived on the scene. Friends of my parents had a car and drove my mother and me about four miles out of town and my father met us with the trusty team and sleigh for the trip home. This was the middle of January in 1925.
I was the youngest in a family of three children. I have two older brothers. When I was 5 years old, I started my education at the local rural school. We had one teacher for the first through eighth grades. Water was carried to school by pail from a nearby neighbor's home. The bathroom was rather cold and airy. However, you can't play Anthony Over at any of these newfangled centralized school buildings.
When I got to the fourth grade, we went by bus to Mohawk school. This was in the mid-1930s. It sure seemed strange to have 30 pupils all studying in the same grade work for a change. I had Miss Fuller for my teacher in the Columbia Street School. The next year we went to Grove Street School and stayed there until I graduated in 1943.
My freshman year in high school was both happy and sad. My brother got married in September of that year, which was exciting, and my father died of a heart attack in December.
After graduating, I got a job working in Remington Rand Plant 2 in Ilion. I worked in the Accounts Payable Department from July of 1943 'til 1949 when the war was over and they were cutting back a bit.
By that time I had been married for two years.
The man I married came to the neighborhood where I lived to board himself and his three children. I don't recall how we met. We just got acquainted at church and grange get-togethers, I guess.
Our first date was in August of 1946 and we went on a Sunday evening to Cooperstown to hear a concert by the lake. We never did find that concert. I worked days and my newfound friend worked nights, so we went out on weekends and got engaged before Christmas of that year and were married the following June.
We had friends and neighbors who were more knowledgeable than we were - they tried to change our plans and discourage us, but we got married anyway.
We bought a house and moved our family in and made a home of it. When the two older girls were married and the youngest graduated from high school, we started another family of girls. We didn't want to be lonely, you know.
Earlier this month (June 1976), we celebrated our 29th anniversary. We have hopes of many more. Anniversaries, I mean.
