Lost for 24 yours in the Town of Salisbury, Herkimer County, two Nelliston youths used Boy Scout training and past experience to keep reasonably comfortable until they could find their way to a road which took them back to civilization.
The youths are Larry Sibley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mykel, and W. Joel Eaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Eaker.
The pair entered the woods about 8 Sunday morning with - other adult hunters from the Nelliston area, then separated from the party and were to return to the men about 4 in the afternoon as a camp three miles - of Jerseyfield Lake. When the failed to report before darkness, the adults notified Mang, Conservation Department ranger and District Forester Seymour Coutant of Herkimer, who alerted State Police. The search party, including members of the Nelliston hunting party and volunteers, started out about 7 Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the youths had walked out of the forest on a dirt road near Stratford, about 20 miles from the search headquarters. They were picked up by an elderly man while hitchhiking and he brought them to search headquarters.
Mrs. Eaker said her son told her that he and Shibley used their socks and gloves to start a fire, then added wood to keep warm during a night of high winds and rain. They kept a steady marching pace in the campfire area.
About 6 Monday morning, the boys began to follow the direction of the rising sun, and came upon a dirt road which was lined with hunters' camps and tents. In one tent they found some cider and cookies, which they consumed and Eaker left $2 (all they had between them) to cover the cost. Neither had eaten since they entered the woods.
They reached the road on which they were eventually picked up about 10 Monday morning.
