Pilot Downed by Reds Describes His Rescue
(Watertown Daily times, NY, Thursday, August 12, 1965)
By ROBERT J. SPATH
Staff writer of the Times
A former northern New Yorker, now flying jets in the U. S. air force, told here this week how he and another pilot were rescued after they were forced to abandon their F-4C Phantom II aircraft over North Viet Nam.
Capt. Gary L. Getman, Carthage native and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn A. Rice, 417 Washington street, was here on leave after flying 70 combat missions in Southeast Asia.
Captain Getman, 31, said Tuesday that- the sound of a beeper-type emergency radio, about the size of a box of animal crackers and worn about the waist, was detected and they were rescued approximately an hour after he and the other pilot had pushed the-buttons on their ejection seats at an altitude of 10,000 feet.
Following successful jumps, a helicopter came to their rescue and lifted the pilots to a safety zone.
Operated on batteries, Captain Getman said, the beeper commo can be received up to 24 hours by any UHF radio. "It's the best survival item the U. S. has over there," he remarked.
The F-4C is the standard fighter for the air force and Is deployed for close-support and attack missions with the Tactical Air Command (TAC).
Captain Getman's aircraft was hit by small arms fire on June 10 during a low level attack near Hanoi - Communist strong hold and capital of North Viet Nam. The bullet, or bullets, struck the fuel tank of the giant fighter-bomber. The F-4C's normally carry a fuel load of 17,000 pounds, which the captain" said was equivalent to 2,500 gallons of fuel.
Ground fire struck one of the two external tanks, -he said. Heading for home (which information was top secret classification), the air craft ran out of fuel. The gauge or needle rapidly approached the empty mark. Later they were forced to abandon the craft.
Captain Getman said that he had made six parachute jumps previously but the one over North Viet Nam was first flight via the ejection seat and “it's a little bit different.”
A member of the 45th TAC Fighter squadron, with home base at MacDill air force base, Tampa. Fla., Captain Getman served the maximum of 90 days in Viet Nam. The majority of his missions were air cover for ground strikes, air-to-ground missions and dive bombing and strafing.
"We knocked out a lot of bridges and barracks and hit a good-sized power plant - the largest south of Hanoi. The only two Russian-built Migs- the squadron encountered were shot down," Captain Getman explained. Each mission lasted on the average of two and a half hours.
He said, regarding the Viet Cong's use of small arms: "They don't shoot at you, they shoot straight up in the air, making, more or less, a screen of bullets."
Claiming 220 hours of combat flying, Captain Getman said the VC have a good early warning device for detecting and tracking down enemy (our) aircraft. He said all his missions were flown in daylight hours either early morning, noon or late afternoon. Normally, he ran two missions each day.
Captain Getman, who left MacDill for Southeast Asia April 3 and served there until April 28, said that the F-4C Phantom II destroyed last month by what U.S. officials have said was a surface-to-air missile was "from our 45th squadron."
Captain Getman was today visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Getman, at their summer home at Number Four near Lowville. He will remain in the north country until Sept. 1, then return to MacDill. "After a while, the squadron will probably be assigned to a base somewhere in the Orient; maybe the Philippines or Okinawa," he commented.
Mrs. Getman, the former Lynne Rice, and the couple's children have been living with Mr. and Mrs. Rice here since April. The children are Sara Lynne, 6, Gregory John, 4, and 19 month old Laura Elizabeth.
