  Ward F. Nixon Jr., 53, of Douglas, Mich., a native of Caroga Lake, died unexpectedly July 6 at Douglas. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
  Mr. Nixon was a graduate of Wheelerville High School and of Union College, Schenectady. He was a patent lawyer for the Upjohn Drug Company of Kalamazoo, Mich. He resided the last six months at Douglas and had commuted to work at Kalamazoo and Washington, D. C. for the company.
  Mr. Nixon, some years ago, assisted his father, Ward F. Nixon Sr. of Canada Lake, in the operation of the Vrooman Hotel at Caroga Lake.
  Survivors, besides his father and stepmother, Mrs. Martha Nixon, are his wife, the former Constance Pinkham; two sons, David Nixon and Richard Nixon, both of Douglas; a daughter in New Jersey; three grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
  A service for Mr. Nixon was held at a Douglas funeral home. Burial was in a Douglas area cemetery.


Constance Louise Pinkham

  SAUGATUK - Constance (Nixon) Sperti, 62, of 288 Black River St. South Haven, formerly of Saugatuck, died Tuesday, June 17, in south Haven Community Hospital.
  Born in Schenectady, N.Y., she had moved to Saugatuk from Kalamazoo in 1972. Following the death of her first husband, Ward F. Nixon in 1974, she moved to South Haven.
  She married Albert Sperti in 1979. She had been employed by The Shores Reality in South Haven.
  Syrviving are her husband, Albert; a daughter, Mrs. Lars (Candace)Hjalmquist of East Amhert, N.T.; two sons, David W. Nixon of South Haven and Richard M. Nixon of Sault Ste. Marie; four grandchildren; and her mother, Mrs. Louise M. Pinkham of Scotia, N.Y.
  Services wil be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Dykstra Saugatuk Chapel with Rev. Clarence Hanscom officiating. Burial will be in Douglas Cemetery.
  No visitation is scheduled.
  Memorials may be given to the Cancer Society.

  A delightful shower was tendered Mrs. Ward Nixon, Jr., Scotia, Saturday evening when Miss Margaret Jennings and Mrs. William Lathers entertained for her at the home of Miss Jennings in the Town of Glen. The guest of honor was showered with gifts. During the evening a mock wedding ceremony was performed and games played, with prizes awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jennings. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Price, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Nixon, Jr., Mrs. H. E. Pinkham and Harold Pinkham. A large decorated wedding cake featured the buffet luncheon, at which favors were nosegays of Spring flowers.

  Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Constance Pinkham, daughter of Mrs. Harold E. Pinkham, Reynolds St., Scotia, and the late Mr. Pinkham, to Ward F. Nixon Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Nixon, Caroga Lake. The ceremony took place in the parsonage of the Methodist Church in Bennington, Vt., Nov. 9, 1940.
  The Rev. Charles M. Sturgess officiated.
   Mr. and Mrs. Nixon are residing in Scotia. Mr. Nixon is a student of Union College. Mrs. Nixon formerly spent most of her summer vacations at Lake Luzerne.

  Mr. Leon H. Thompson, age 84 of Gloversville, died Monday, September 24, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, following a short illness.
  He was born June 3, 1923 in Gloversville, the son of the late John and Effie Burdow Thompson. A 1940 graduate of Gloversville High School, Leon also attended the former Gloversville Business School. He served in the US Army under General Patton during World War II.
  Mr. Thompson was employed as an accountant for about 48 years by General Telepjone Company of Upstate New York. He was an active member of Foothills United Methodist Church, where he was responsible for the public address system for many years. He was Berkshire Fire Department Secretaty for many years, and was Treasurer of the Berkshire Fire District for 35 years until his recent illness.
  Leon was married on August 7, 1948, to Edith Murdock who survives. He is also survived by his son, Glen E. Thompson (Marguerite) and two grandsons, Matthew and Nathan Thompson, all of Manlius, NY.
  The family will receive friends from 11 am to 12 pm Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 12 pm with Rev. Wayme E. Jones, Sr. officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats.


Marriage Notes for Edith L Murdock and Leon H Thompson

 - Wedding Announcement (Leader Republican, Johnstown, NY, Monday, August 9, 1948)
  The marriage of Miss Edith L. Murdock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Murdock, Fonda, and Leon H. Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thompson, 57 Sixth avenue. was solemnized Saturday noon in the Firat Methodist church. The Rev. Harry L Luerich performed the double ring ceremony before the altar decorated with pink and white gladioli and lighted tapers. Members of the immediate families witnessed the ceremony.
  The bride wore a floor length dress of white marquisette over white satin, made with bodice and square neckline and full skirt. Her French illusion finger tip veil fell a beaded coronet, and she carried white gladioli with an orchid center and wore a string of pearls.
  Her maid of honor. Miss Charlotte Van Patten, wore a pink satin gown made with sweetheart neckline and full skirt and a shoulder length veil of pink net flowers with pearl centers and carried pink gladioli. The beat man was Calvin Simmons.
  The bride's mother wore a flowered bemberg dress, with white accessories, and the bridegroom's mother wore aqua with white accessories. Each wore a corsage of red rose buds.
  After the ceremony a wedding dinner was held at the Colonial restaurant in Fonda for the bridal party and members of the immediate families. The tables were decorated with bouquets of sweetpeas and centered with a three tier wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and bridegroom under a white wedding bell.
  Later the young couple left on an automobile trip through the New England States and Northern New York. Upon their return they will reside at 57 Sixth avenue, Gloversville. The bride's going away away outfit consisted of a flowered crepe dress with white accessories and an orchid corsage.
  Mrs. Thompson was graduated from the Fonda High school with the Class of 1946 and is employed in the revenue accounting department of the Upstate Telephone Corp. in Johnstown.
  The bridegroom was graduated from the Gloversville High school with the Class of 1940 and the Gloversville Business school. He is employed in the engineering department of the Upstate Telephone Corp. He served three years with the U. S. Army during World War II, two years being spent in the European theatre.

  PHOENIX, Ariz. - Edward L. Murdock, 61, of Phoenix, died Aug. 11.
  Born March 27, 1932, in Gloversville, the son of Howard S. and Mabel Lynaugh Murdock. He was a graduate of Fonda High School. After his marriage, he moved to Great Falls, Mont., and in 1989, he moved to Arizona.
  Mr. Murdock was a toll board test man for Mountain Bell Telephone for 24 years, retiring in 1988.
  He was a veteran of the U.S.Air Force, serving during the Korean War.
  He was married to Patricia Maloney in 1952.
  In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Shirley Skinner and Ann Steward, both of Phoenix; a sister, Edith Thompson of Gloversville, and a granddaughter.
  Funeral services were conducted on Aug. 16. Burial was in Phoenix Memorial Cemetery.
  Arrangements were by the Heritage Funeral Chapel, Phoenix.

  The bride Is a graduate of Sheridan High School, Great Falls. Mont., class of 1950. and the Columbia School of Nursing, Great Falls. The bridegroom is a graduate of Fonda High School, class of 1949, and following a post graduate course, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in April, 1950.
   Following a wedding trip to Glacier National Park and Alberta, Canada, they are residing at 909 Second Aye., South Great Falls, Mont.


Thomas J Hester

  The husband of a former area school teacher has been awarded the Silver Star Medal for actions on Jan. 5, 1968, in Vietnam.
  Maj. Thomas L. Hester, husband of the former Janet Skapik of Johnstown, was presented a citation and medal during recent ceremonies held at Fort Rucker, Ala.'s U.S. Army Aviation School. Mrs. Hester is the daughter of Mrs. Henri Causse and the late Stephen Skapik of Johnstown. The Hesters have two children.
  Maj. Hester, whose wife has been a school teacher in the Glen-Worden School and in the Schenectady Public Schools, including Elmer Avenue School, was cited for actions when he was an air mission commander with the 187th Assault Helicopter Co.
  The citation said he directed his flight of helicopters through a complicated and extremely hazardous mission despite several losses.
  He organized rescue missions for crews and pinpointed positions of the enemy for attack by U.S. gunships, the citation said, in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

Benton Sr., 114 Lincoln Street, Gloversville, at 11 this morning at the Immaculate Conception Church . Rev. Harold McKeon performed the double ring ceremony.
  The church was decorated with white gladioli. Wedding music was played by Mrs. Amelia Walsh. The bride was given in marriage by her father.
  Miss Causse wore a gown of imported Swiss organdie over taffeta, scalloped neckline with long torso bodice, full hooped skirt with side tiers of ruffles edged in scollops ending in a chapel train. She also wore an imported silk fingertip veil edged in embroidery attached to tiara of pearls and rhineatones. Sbe carried a white orchid on her prayer book.
  Miaa Rose Komornik, matron of honor, wore pink lace and nylon tulle ovvr taffeta, wide "V" neckline, full skirt made in tiers with a queen crown of pink tulle leaves. She carried a colonial bouquet of carnations and red roses.  
   Misses Jean and Shirley Cerrone, cousins of the bride wore blue crystallette bodice with jacket, full floor length skirt made in tiers of nylon tulle over taffeta. They wore a queen's crown of blue tulle leaves.
  Miss Rhonda Guile, flower girl, wore white nylon tulle over brocaded satin.
  Donald Benton, brother of the bridegroom was best man and the ushers were Harold Brown. Dexter Risadorph, both of Gloversville.
  The bride's mother wore a dress of blue lace over taffeta with white
accessories and a corsage of pink roses. Mother of the bridegroom wore a dress of navy blue taffeta with pink accessories and corsage of pink roses.
  The couple left for a wedding trip to the Thousand Islands. For traveling, tbe bride chose a dress of polished print cotton with pink accessories. On return, they will reside in Geneva. New York.
  The bride is a graduate of Johnstown Higb School, class of '51, and Nathan Littauer Hospital of Nursing, class of "54: The bridegroom is a graduate of Gloversville High School, class of 49, and Springfield College, class of 54 At present is a member of the USAF

  Miss Cerrone, who is the daughter of the late Mrs. Mildred Cerrone, is a graduate of Johnstown High School and St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing. She is employed as a staff nurse at St. Mary's Hospital.
  A graduate of St. Mary's Institute, Dr. Isabel received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Siena College and his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada. He interned at Ottawa General Hospital and spent his residency at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. He is at present practicing in Amsterdam.
  The wedding is planned for July 18.

  Miss Shirley Ann Cerrone, daughter of Mr. and Mra. Joseph P. Cerrone of Johnstown, became the bride of Wayne Lewis Barney, son of Dr. and Mrs. Kerson Barney of Brooklyn, in a ceremony held at the Immaculate Conception Church, Johnstown, on July 27. The church was decorated with white gladioli, carnations, chrysanthemums and palms, and traditional wedding music was provided by Mrs. Agnes Sahut, organist, and Miss Janet Hiley, Gloversvllle, soloist.
  Given In marriage by her father, the bride chose a gown of peau de sole fashioned with fitted bodice accented with lace and pearl beading, scoop neckline and bell shaped skirt which terminated in a chapel train. Her crown of orange blossoms and pearls held a bouffant veil of English Illusion and she carried a white orchid on a prayer book and stephanotis.
  Miss Jane Vrooman of New York city attended as maid of honor wearing a floor length gown of blue silk organza over taffeta styled with fitted bodice, scoop neckline, and bell skirt accented at the waist with a shaded print cummerbund. A. watteau train completed the ensemble. Her headpiece was a matching organza cabbage rose.
  Miss Mary Cerrone, sister of the bride, and Mrs. Daniel McMartln, Buffalo, were bridesmaids; Miss Eden Barney was junior brldesmaid and Miss Jill Thomas was flower girl. The bridesmaids wore pale blue gowns fashioned similarly to the maid of honor's. Miss Barney and Miss Thomas, both nieces of the bridegroom, wore street length dresses of white silk organza over taffeta styled with round neckline and full skirt All wore matching cabbage rose bats and carried baskets of blue and white daisies.
  Richard Barney served as best man for his brother. Ushers included Robert Thomas, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, and Kerson Barney Jr., brother of the bridegroom. A luncheon reception for 150 guests was held at Nick Stoner's Inn, Caroga Lake,
  The bride graduated from Johnstown high school, attended the State University College at Oswego and graduated from the College of Saint Rose with a bachelor of science degree in education. She will be a teacher in the New York city public school system.
  The bridegroom, a graduate of Erasmus Hall high school, Brooklyn, is an alumnus of Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara, Calif. He is employed as a commercial Illustrator at Geoly Studio, New York city.
  Following a wedding trip to Canada, the couple will make their home In Brooklyn.

  Frank W. Frederick Jr., 60, of Division Street, Fort Plain, died Monday at
Albany Medical Center after being stricken at home on Friday. Born in Amsterdam on Jan. 23, 1936, he was the son of Frank Frederick and Hazel
Baker. He was educated in Canajoharie schools.
  Mr. Frederick was employed at Beech Nut/Life Savers in Canajoharie for 27 years and at the time of his death he was employed at Lee Dye Company in Johnstown as a machine operator for the last six years. He was a lifelong area resident.
 He married Janice Lyon on April 12, 1996.
  Suvivors, including his wife, are three sons, Frank W. Frederick III of Ephratah; David T. Frederick of Nelliston; and Timothy J. Frederick of Fonda; one daughter, Sharon Frederick of Palatine Bridge; his father and step-mother, Frank and Ruth Frederick of Palatine Bridge; one step-son, Robert Cobb of Nelliston; three step-daughters, Tracy Lynn Cobb of Gloversville; Tricia L. Warren of Schenectady; and Teresa R. Cobb, of Amsterdam; one brother, Robert L. Frederick of Palatine Bridge; three sisters, Dorothy Russ, of Canajoharie; Hazel Lewis of Fort Plain; and Patricia Congdon of Mohawk; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will be in Ephratah Rural Cemetery.
  Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department, Box 248, Fort Plain, 13339.

  On Aug. 8 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, St Johnsville, Miss Alice Jean Showerman became the bride of Frank William Frederick Jr. Rev. Herman Briole, pastor, performed the double ring ceremony at 2:30 p.m.   
   The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Showerman of Fort Plain RD 1, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs., Frank W. Frederick of Palatine Brldge RD 1.
  The church was decorated with pink and white gladioli, white chrysanthemums and sweatpeas. Escorted by her father, the bride wore a long-sleeved gown of imported chantllly lace and nylon tulle over satin, fashioned with a sequin-trlmmed sabrina neckline and a bouffant ruffled skirt of tulle and lace that formed a chapel train. Her waist-length veil was held by a crown of Iridescent sequins and she carried a colonial bouquet of white chrysanthemums and orchids.
  Mrs. Nancy Showerman of Fort Plain RD 1. sister-in-law of the bride, was matron of honor. The bridesmaids were Miss Shirley Flanders, Miss Marian Flanders land Miss Carol Bramer, all of Fort Plain RD 1. Miss Robin Showerman, sister of the bride, was flower girl.
  Ths matron of honor wore a pink gown of nylon organza over taffeta, styled with a shirred bodice, stole and a full skirt with an apron of flowers and streamers. A headpiece of taffeta leaves held her brief veil.
  The bridesmaids wore cotillion blue ensembles of the same design as the honor attendant's.
  The bride's mother wore a pink dress of lace over taffeta with matching accessories. The mother of the bridegroom wore a lace trimmed dress of beige taffeta with white accessories. Each had a corsage of white chrysanthemums.
  William Holts of Palatine Bridge RD 1 was best man. The ushers were Ralph Showerman, brother and Gerald Showerman, brother of the bride and both of Fort Plain RD 1, and George Hoptz was ring bearer.
   The wedding was followed by a buffet luncheon and reception at the Stone lodge in Palatine Bridge, after which the newlyweds left for Niagara Falls. After Sunday they will be at home in their trailer. Palatine Bridge RD.
  The bride attended Fort Plain Central school.
   The bridgroom attended Canajoharie Central school and operates his own farm.
