Evelyn M. Young (Published on Friday, June 15, 2007)
Evelyn M. Young, age 88, of Johnstown (Trackside Apartments), formerly of Caroga Lake, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Country Club Retirement Center in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
She was born in the Town of Mohawk on September 25, 1918, a daughter of the late Edward T. Getman and Blanche Ecker Getman. She was predeceased by a brother, George Getman.
She was a Graduate of Johnstown High School. Evelyn was a member of the Foothills United Methodist Church, the Caroga Lake Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Nick Stoner Seniors, and Johnstown 50 Plus Seniors. She was the Tax Collector for the Town of Caroga for nine years after retiring from The Fulton County National Bank and Trust Company in 1979, where she was employed as a Teller and Bookkeeping Supervisor for 29 years. Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge with her friends and she taught numerous card games to her children and grandchildren.
She was united in marriage to Clark M. Young Sr. on September 25, 1937 and he passed away on November 25, 1994.
Survivors include a son, Clark M. Young Jr. and his wife Jane of 5900 Densmore Road Livonia, NY 14487; one daughter, Gale Schlote and her husband Edward of 335 Springbrook Drive SE New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663; four grandchildren, Clark M. Young III (Jennifer), Christopher Young, Matthew Young, and Allison Miller (Tim); three great-grandchildren, Brooke, Tyler, and McKenna; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private family service was held in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date from the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.
Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Miss Evelyn M. Getman, daughter of Mr.s and Mrs. Edward T. Getman of Albany Bush, and Merrill Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Young of Sammonsville, were united iin marriage in the parsonage of the Reformed church this afternoon.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Edward I. Swarthout, Jr. The attendants were Mr. and Mrs. George Edick of Sammonsville.
The bride was attierd in a brown suit with matching accessories, and wore a corsage of roses. The matron of honor ware a grey suit, with black accessories and a corsage of roses.
The bride presented her attendant with a black velvet bag, and the bridegroom's gift to the best man was a leather bilfold.
Immediately after the ceremony, the newlywedds left by automobile for a short stay in New York City. Upon their return they will reside in Sammonsville.
Mrs. Young is a graduate of Johnstown High School, Class of 1936, and has been employed in the F. W. Woolworth Co. storem 18 West Main street. She has been the guest of honor at several pre-nuptual affairs.
Mr. Young is employed in the factory of Jesse D. Edick, 27 1/2 North Melcher street.
Both mr. and Mrs. Young are well known and popular young residents of thier respective communities, and their many friends will join in extending congratulations.

Harry G. Van Aernam, 55, of East Main Street Extension was pronounced dead on arrival at Johnstown Hospital about 6:15 last night after having been found by his wife lying in his driveway.
Dr. George L. Tripp, doctor of chiropractic and a Fulton County coroner, has issued a verdict of death due to a heart attack.
Born April 22, 1921, in Johnstown, he was the son of the later Earl Van Aernam Sr. and Mrs. Gladys Getman Smith, of Johnstown RD, who survives.
On April 26, 1947, he married the former Norma Clark, who also survives. He attended Johnstown schools and was a World War II Army veteran.
A lifelong area resident, Mr. Van Aernam was for a number of years a bus driver for Giuffre Brothers of Fonda. He also operated Harry's Auto Sales on East Main Street Extension for about 25 years.
He was of the Presbyterian faith, a member of the Eagles lodge, Red Men and VFW Post.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include four sons, Gordon of Johnstown, Toby, Robert and Timothy, all at home; three sisters, Mrs. Raymond Shaw of Gloversville RD, Mrs. Donald Warren of Johnstown RD 1, and Mrs. Harold Dence Sr. of Johnstown; three brothers, Earl Jr. of Glen, Robert of Johnstown Rd 2, and Edward of Johnstown; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, an aunt and an uncle.

Harry Van Aernam, World War II veteran and son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Van Aernam, extention East Main street, was married Saturday evening to Miss Norma Clarke, daughter of Marguerite Clarke of Amsterdam.
The Rev. James W. Hood performed the double-ring ceremony at 8 P.M. before a gathering of 150. Mrs. Howard Cole of this city was organist, and Mrs. Elizabeth Howard, also of Johnstown, gave vocal selections.
Giving the bride in marriage was he brother, Robert Clarke os Schenectady.
For the occasion the bride wore a white satin gown with a loong train of white lace inserts, as well as a white finger tip veil and a beaded crown. She had a prayer-book bouquet with an orchid and streamers.
Matron of honor, Mre. Ethel Barber of Schenectady, was attired in white net over pink taffeta, with a halo of pink roses and a white veil. She had a Colonial bouquet of pink roses.
There were six bridesmaids, three of them sisters of the bride, the Misses Betty, Rega Clarke of Amsterdam R. D. 6 and Miss Arlene Clarke of Amsterdam R. D. 2. The first wore white net over blue taffeta, the second white net over rose taffeta, and the latter yellow taffeta. All had halos matching the color of their individual gowns, in addition to pink carnation bouquets.
The three other, were Mrs. Beatrice Clarke of Schenectady, sister-in-law of the bride, who wore chartreuse taffeta; Miss Carmella Verdile of Mechanicville, who had aquamarine taffeta, and Miss Erma Pearo of Amsterdam R. D. 2, with orchid taffeta. Like the others, these were attired in white net over the gowns, with halos of corresponding shade, while carrying pink carnation bouquets.
The bride's mother wore a black crepe dress with fuchaia front and black accessories, while bridegroom's mother had on a navy-blue crepe dres. with white accessories. Both had corsages of red roses.
There were three male attendants, all from Johnstown. They were Norman Hayes, best man, and Harold Dence and Cheater Smith, ushers.
After the wedding ceremony, a reception was held in the chapel. Supper was served by tha Altruist Class of the church. Before leaving for their wedding trip the couple presented gold lockets, to the bridesmaids, and a personal gift to the matron of honor.
The newlyweds are on a two-week automobile trip to Detroit, Mich., and Canada. The brides going away outfit was a grey suit with navy blue coat and hat.
Upon their return, they will reside for a time at the home of the bridegroom where the latter is affiliated with his father in the trucking and farming business.
The bridegroom served for 5 1/2 years with the Armed Forces and saw action ln the Pacific area during the last war. The bride, employed by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, is a graduate of Draper High School in that city.

Toby Van Aernam, 15, of East Main Street Extension died at 10:50 last night at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, where he had been a patient four days. He had been in failing health for two years.
Born May 8, 1961, in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Harry G. Van Aernam and Mrs. Norma Clark Van Aernam, who survives.
He was a member of the sophomore class at Johnstown High School and had lived in the Johnstown area all his life. He attended the Reformed Church.
Survivors in addition to his mother are three brothers, Gordon, Robert and Timothy Van Aernam, all of Johnstown; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Marguerite Clark of Gloversville, paternal grandmother, Mrs. Chester Smith of Johnstown; one niece, one nephew, and several aunts and uncles.

Howard Kllmartin, brother of the bridegroom, was best man and Edward Van Aernam ushered. A reception for 110 guests was held at Redman's hall, Johnstown.
The bride attended Perth and Johnstown schools, and the bridegroom attended Fonda-Fultoriville schools. He is employed by the Johnstown Knitting Mill.
The newlyweds are residing at 16 South Melcher street, Johnstown.

She was Born Nov. 27,1925, in Johnstown, the daughter of Earl and Gladys Getman VanAernam. Mrs. Dence was a homemaker. She was married to the late Harold Dence Sr., who had died in 1977. She is survived by: one daughter, Mary Ann Quinones (William) of Gloversville; one sister, Dorothy Shaw of Johnstown; one brother, Earl VanAernam Jr. of Sprakers; 9 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Florence A. Warner, age 74, a resident of Johnstown, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008. She was born April 22, 1934 in Johnstown to Earl Van Aernam Sr. and Gladys Getman Van Aernam Smith.
Mrs. Warner was a 48 year member of the Mohawk Council No. 338, and Improved Order of Red Men degree of Pocahontas.
Florence was employed at the former Scotsmoor Glove Co., Leon Swears, Rubin Gloves, and retired from Samco Glove Co. She was also employed for 17 years for Diana Knit.
On April 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Donald L. Warner Sr. and he passed away on November 20, 2000.
Survivors include her children, Shirley Lang of Johnstown, Roy Warner of Johnstown, Donald L. Warner Jr. of Gloversville, Ronald Warner Sr. of Johnstown, Sharon Carpenter of Ft. Hunter, Richard Warner of Johnstown, Roger Warner of Caroga Lake, Robert Warner of Johnstown, and Russell Warner of Johnstown; one brother, Earl Van Aernam of Randall; two sisters, Dorothy Shaw of Johnstown and Jesse Dence of Gloversville; 32 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Florence was known as mom and grandmother to many others.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Harry, Edward, Robert, Clarence and Frank Van Aernam.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. from the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.
Friends and family may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Funeral services were held this morning at the Cole Funeral Home in Johnstown for Frank E. Van Aernam, 28, of 114 Washington St., who died Tuesday at Ellis Hospital where he had been a patient for a week.
He was the husband of the former Jo Ann Kwiatkowski of Amsterdam. Born in the Town of Johnstown, he had been employed at Simco Leather Co. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
The Rev. Donald Wing, pastor of the Johnstown Reformed Church, officiated at the funeral. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Van Aernam is survived by his mother, Mrs. Earl Van Aernam, and one daughter, Jeanne; four brothers. After the ceremony a reception for 110 persons was held at Ukrainian Hall, Amsterdam.
For a wedding trip to Niagara Falls, the bride chose a white suit and black accessories. On their return Mr. and Mrs. Van Aernam will make their home at 207 North Perry Street.
The bride attended the Wilber H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam.
The bridegroom attended Perth Central School and is employed at Crown Leather Finishing Company, Johnstown.

Edward R. Van Aernam, 55, of Ghent, Columbia County, died Friday in the town of Kinderhook from injuries received in an automobile accident that evening.
He was born Nov. 16, 1944, in Johnstown, the son of Earl and Gladys Getman Van Aernam Sr. He attended local schools.
Mr. Van Aernam was employed by Kling Magnetics of Chatham.
Survivors include three sons, Jason Whittman of Kansas, and Aaron and Eric Whittman of Luftin, Texas; three sisters, Florence Warner and Dorothy Shaw, both of Johnstown, and Jessie Dence of Gloversville; three brothers, Earl Van Aernam of Randall, Robert Van Aernam of North Bush, and Robert Smith of Texas; three grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc. 215 East Main St., Johnstown, with the Rev. Henry Vedder, elder of Christian Life Center, Hudson, officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours will begin at noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Miss Marilyn J. Sollak of 58 East Main Street, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sollak of 34 Fisher Avenue, became the bride of Edward H. Van Aernam, son of Mrs. Chester Smith of East Main Street Extension and the late Earl Van Aernam, at a ceremony at 2 Saturday afternoon at the First Reformed Church. Rev. Albert N. Studley, pastor, performed the double ring ceremony.
The altar was decorated with vases of white mums and pompons. Pews were decorated with white bows. Mrs. Lyall Hutchinson, organist, played "Nuptial Song", "If Thou Are Near", "0 Perfect Love" and classical wedding marches.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white Chantilly lace and peausetta gown over taffeta designed with scalloped neckline, long pointed sleeves, a fitted bodice adorned with pearls and crystals and a bouffant skirt of scalloped lace-edged tiers. The full chapel length
shoulder train was trimmed with matching lace. From her crown of pearls and crystals fell a bouffant veil of silk illusion. She carried a cascade bouquet of white roses.
Miss Linda Hollenbeck of Johnstown was maid of honor. She wore a green glow georgette gown over taffeta designed with a circle neckline, fitted lines and a band of venise lace. She wore a matching floor length capelet designed with a lace collar and a matching headpiece with bouffant veiling. She carried a cascade bouquet of yellow and bronze pompons with yellow sweetheart roses at the center.
Miss Carolyn Gifford and Miss Donna Fox, cousin of the bride, both of Johnstown, were bridesmaids. They were attired in samaron rose gowns, capelets and headpieces designed like that of the maid of honor and carried cascade bouquets of red and white miniature carnations.
Sunday Blodgett of Gloversville was junior bridesmaid. She wore a samaron rose Georgette gown over taffeta fashioned with a circle neckline, fitted bodice, bracelet-length sleeves and a slim skirt with a full panel at the back. She wore a matching headpiece with bouffant veiling. She carried a colonial bouquet of pink miniature carnations and sweetheart roses.
John Rizzo of Johnstown was best man. Ushers were Gary Green and Gordon Van Aernam, nephews of the bridegroom, both of Johnstown.
The mother of the bride wore a blue and green print 2-piece suit with a matching hat. The mother of the bridegroom wore a blue brocade dress with a matching hat. Both wore white cymbidium orchid corsages.
A reception for 125 was held at the Red Men's Hall after the ceremony with guests attending from Johnstown, Gloversville, Meco, Fonda, Rural Grove and Little Falls. A buffet lunch was served and music for dancing provided by the Melody Trio.
For a trip to Canada, the bride wore an off-white knit dress over satin with a corsage of white roses. The couple will reside at 58 East Main Street.
Gifts were presented to attendants at a rehearsal party Friday night at the Rainbow Restaurant given by Mrs. Alice Stein. The bride was honored at two showers prior to the wedding. One was given at the home of the bridegroom's mother and the other at the home of Mrs. Ruby Hayes, 219 North Perry Street, with Miss Betty Mickel and the bride's mother as assistant hostesses.
The bride, a graduate of Johnstown High School, had been employed at the General Telephone Company of Upstate New York at Johnstown and at the Family Bargain Center. The bridegroom, a graduate of Perth Central School, attended an electronics training school at Boston, Mass. He is employed at the White Mop Wringer Company, at Fultonvllle.

Mrs. Lena M. Ortell, age 94, of Gloversville, died Friday morning, Oct. 8, 2010, at the Nathan Littauer Nursing home in Gloversville, where she was a patient for almost six years. She was born on June 26, 1916, in Gloversville, N.Y.; she was the daughter of the late Guy Smith and Viola Getman Smith. She attended Gloversville schools and then worked for Robison & Smith for several years. On June 8, 1936, she was married to Norris J. Ortell; they were married for 64 years before his passing in March of 2000.
She was a member of Nick Stoner Senior Citizens, a member of North Main Street Methodist Church, and active in the women's church group. She was involved with the Brownies organization and Girl Scouts of America, as well as being an active member of the Bleecker Grange. She also did bookkeeping for her husband's business for 32 years. Lena enjoyed playing cards, bingo, playing the piano, singing, and loved painting miniature Christmas village ornaments, along with painting pictures on velvet. She always loved being with family and friends. Her warm-hearted smile, willingness to help others and caring about others will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include: one daughter, Ruth M. Violyn, and son-in-law David A. Violyn; and two granddaughters, Brenda Baumgaertel (Robert), and Deborah Cosselman (Mark); four great-grand children, Kirstie Baumgaertel, Amelia Cosselman, Mikayla Cosselman, Erik Carter; and one niece, Shirley VanGorder May (Roger) of North Carolina. Lena was predeceased by one great-grandson, Michael Carter; and two sisters, Irene Stephans, and Jessie Frank.
Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gloversville Funeral Service, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville (725-6116), where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating. Burial will take place at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Norris Ortell, of 38 Helwtg street, died at birth this morning at the Littauer Hospital.
The body was taken to the Eugene Hollenbeck, Jr., funeral home, 24 Spring street and prepared for burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Irene Mae Stephan, 85, a former Dolgeville resident and who has been residing with her daughter Shirley May at 2 Buena Vista Avenue Queensbury since August, died there Monday evening October 18, 2004.
Irene was born in Johnstown on October 14, 1919 the daughter of Guy and Viola (Getman) Smith and was educated in Gloversville schools.
She was married twice, to Lyman Van Gorder on September 6, 1941 and he predeceased her on February 25, 1963. She then married Carl Stephan on July 3, 1964, he predeceased her on June 20, 1978.
Irene was employed by the Daniel Green Shoe Company of Dolgeville for many years retiring from there in 1981. Upon her retirement, she did volunteer work at Parkside Courts and enjoyed bowling and bingo with her friends.
She was a member of the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter and her husband with who she resided Shirley and Roger May of Queensbury, her grandchildren Colleen Kelly May of Chesapeake, Va., Matthew Lyman May of Portsmouth, Va., Christine and her husband Paul Chupka of Amsterdam, Stacey Lynn May of Virginia Beach, her great-granddaughters Amber Lynn and Brittany Chupka and her great-grandson "Little" Paul Chupka, a sister Lena Ortell of Gloversville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday October 21, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. The Rev. Richard Leonard, pastor of the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in west St. Johnsville Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 11-1 p.m.
It is the wishes of the family that Irene be remembered with a donation to The High Peaks Hospice, 286 Glen Street, Glens Falls NY 12801. Envelopes will be available at the funeral services.

St Johnsville — Lyman VanGorder, 47, of St. Johnsville RD 1, died last night in Little Palls Hospital, where he had been a patient for five days. He had been in ill health for three years.
Mr. VanGorder was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Lassellsville, a son of Clarence and Fannie Argersinger VanGorder. He spent all his life in the Lassellsville area, having been associated the past 12, years with two brothers in the operation of a gasoline station in St. Johnsville.
He was a member of the St. Johnsville Methodist Church and the R-G-L fire department and Fire Police at Lassellsville. He married the former Irene Smith 21 years ago.
The survivors, besides his wife and parents, are one daughter, Mrs Roger May of St. Johnsville: two brothers Harwood and Everett of St. Johnsville; nieces and nephews.

Misa Irene Smith, Johnstown, and Lyman Van Gorder, Lassellsville, were married on Saturday afternoon, September 6 at 3 o'clock in the local Methodist parsonage. Rev. C. Frederick Miller, pastor, performed the ceremony.
Attendants were Miss Margaret Pierce and Harwood Van Gorder. The newlyweds plan to make their residence in Scotch Bush, north of Lassellsville.

Donald Alden Ecker
Donald Alden Ecker, 74, of N. Chase St., Johnstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
Born Jan. 7, 1931 in Johnstown, the son of Alden E. and Marguerite Musgrave Ecker. He graduated from Johnstown High School in 1948, then he attended Cornell University.
Mr. Ecker was an Artificial Inseminator for Cattle for the Eastern Artificial Inseminator Cooperative for 16 years. Then he worked in the textile industry for Continental and Johnstown Knitting Mill, where he retired in 1989.
He was of the Protestant faith. He was past president of Kiwanis Club in Johnstown and former coach and manager of the Johnstown Little League and the Johnstown Babe Ruth.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Demarest Ecker of Johnstown, whom he married February 24, 1951; 1 daughter, Linda Ruzycky of Broadalbin; 2 sons, Bradley J. Ecker of Voorheesville and Donald A. Ecker of Scotia; grandchildren, Deena, Krista, Jeremey Ecker; 1 brother, Douglas Ecker of Northville; nieces; nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown with Rev. Wade Prime, pastor of Village Bible Church, Fonda, officiating. At Mr. Ecker's request, there will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Reformed Church or the Village Bible Church in Fonda or charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown.
