 - Obituary (The Otsego Farmer, Cooperstown, NY, Friday, March 7, 1952)
  The death of Paul James McManus Occurred at his home at Lindsey, Calif. on, February 15, following a
long illness. He was 57 years old.
  Mr, McManus was born in the town of Springfield on December 4, 1894, a son of James and Allie (Getman) McManus. On February 16, 1918, he was married to Miss Viola Getman, who survives.
  A mechanic and carpenter by trade, he went to Lindsay in 1935. Mr. and Mrs, McManus last visited in this area in 1949, after an absence of 18 years.
   Besides his wife, he is Survived by a daughter, Mrs. Leo Ryser and two grandchildren of Arcadia, Calif.; and a brother, Harry L. McManus of Fly Creek.
  Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as three uncles, Peter McManus of Schenectady, and Philip and John of Cooperstown, and an aunt, Margaret McManus of Cooperstown.
  Funeral services were held in Webb Chapel on Monday, February 18, at 10 a. m. Interment was in Olive
cemetery at Lindsay.

  Mrs. Ethel Crist, 66, of Lake Street, Richfield Springs, a native of Fly Creek, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 29, at her home.
  Mrs. Crist was born January 24, 1906 at Fly Creek, a daughter of Everett and Anna Stickles. She attended schools in Fly Creek and was graduated from Mohawk High School.
  She was married to Howard Crist at Utica on March 26, 1926 after which the couple made their home in Richfield Springs.
  She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, St. John's Women's Guild, the War Mothers Club, and of the Eastern Star where she was past matron.
  Surviving are her husband; a son, Ronald H. Crist, Richfield Springs; a daughter, Miss Geraldine Crist, Richfield Springs; a brother, George Stickles, Brookfield; and two granddaughters.
  Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, at the St. John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Lawrence C. Butler, former rector, officiating.
  Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

  RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Howard S. Crist, 85, died peacefully at his home on Friday, August 12, 1988.
  He was bom on June 17, 1903, in Richfield Springs, a son of Frederick and Laura Magadiew Crist. He married the former Ethel Stickles on March 26, 1926, in Utica. Mr. Crist was a devoted member of his community, serving as a charter member of the Exempt Firemen, a Vestryman at St. John's Church for many years and a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge. For many years, he worked as a sales clerk at Buchanan Hardware Store.
  Survivors include a son, Ronald H. Crist, and a daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Crist, both of Richfield Springs; and two granddaughters. He was predeceased by a brother, William, in 1980.
  Funeral service, St. John's Episcopal Church, 11 a.m., Monday, August 15, 1988. Interment at Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Friends may call at the J.   Richfield Springs - The marriage of Miss Judith Ann Hagen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Hagen, Mohawk. R.D., and Ronald Crist, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Crist of this village, was solemnized in St. John's Church. Richfield Springs, by the Rev. Lawrence Crawford Butler, Saturday morning, August 18, at eleven o'clock. Following the ceremoney, the bridal couple received Holy Communion.
  The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore white waltz-length gown of Nylon tulle and lace, a pleated bodice fashioned with short sleeves and Peter Pan collar, a bouffant skirt trimmed with lace panels, a finger tip veil caught to a crown of lace and pearls. Her flowers were a cascade of white pom pons and, ivy with white satin streamers.
  The matron of honor. Mrs. Kenneth Breese, a sister of the bride, wore a pink bell-shaped cocktail dress of pure silk with matching head band and carried a colonial bouquet of pink and white pom pons with pink satin streamers.
  The bridesmaids, Miss Geraldine Crist, the bridegroom's sister and Miss Shirley Eysaman wore gowns identical to the matron of honor's, in aqua with matching head bands and carried colonial bouquets of aqua and white pom pons with aqua satin streamers.
  The best man was David Crist of Burlington, Mass., a cousin of the bridegroom and the ushers were Thomas Southworth and Garry Wahl, of this village. White galdioli and white pom pons adorned the altar. Mrs. Lews I. Whipple was the organist.
  A reception was held at the Mohawk Hotel, Mohawk.
  The bride is a graduate of the Mohawk Central School, class of 1962. Mr. Crist is a 1959 graduate of the Richfield Springs Central School and is employed by the Tennessee Natural Gas Company of West Winfield.
  After a trip to New England, Mr. and Mrs. Crist will reside at 35 Lake Street this village.
  Pre-nuptial events were given by Mrs. Richard Cross and Mrs. Joseph Coveleski and Mrs. Theodore Bahry and by the bridal attendants.
  The mother of the bride wore a blue print jersey dress, with white accessories and corsage of white carnations. The Bridegroom's mother wore, a beige linen dress with sapphire blue accessories and a white carnation corsage.
  Guests were present from Auburn. N. Y., Wappingers Falls, Poughkeepsie, Marlboro, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Staten Island, and surrounding Valley towns.

  RICHFIELD SPRINGS - George A. Stickles, 64, formerly of Academy Ave. Bookfield, died Monday in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
  He was bom at Fly Creek, son of Irving and Anna Van Steinberg Stickles. He was a machine operator at the Kelsey Hayes Company in Utica and retired in 1968.
  Mr. Stickles leaves three daughters, Mrs. William (Nancy) Alsante of Utica, Mrs. Elizabeth Rathbun of Fort Plain, and Mrs. Peggy Moschetto of Herkimer; a stepson, Gary Ebare of Hudson Falls.
  The funeral will be at 10:30 Friday from the McGrath Funeral Home in Richfield Springs. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
  Calling hours are 7 to 9 tonight.

  A very pretty wedding took place Wednesday evening, June 26th, at 8:30 p. m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McManus in Pierstown when their daughter, Edith Marion, was united in marriage to Daniel Wickham, by Reverend G. H. McCleave.
  The bride wore white with a veil and was attended by Metta Kane, a school day friend; Grover McManus acted as best man. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Harry McManus. Following the ceremony ice cream and cake were served to the large number present.
  Both the bride and groom are pop- (sic) and many friends extend heartiest congratulations and best wishes for a long and happy wedded life. The bride is a graduate, of Cooperstown High School and of the training class at Richfield Springs and has taught for three years in the Fly Creek Valley School. Mr. Wickham is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Wickham and a prosperous young farmer. Both are members of the Twelve Thousand Church and Fly Creek Valley Grange. They received many beautiful and useful gifts among them $200 from the groom's parents. After a short trip in Canada they will reside on the W. I. Pickens place.

  Wilkie T. "Wil" Maddox Jr., 69, Muncie, Ind., died Saturday morning, April 17, 1999, at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Ind., after an extended illness.
  He was born in Baltimore, Md., attended schools in Long Island, N.Y., and Cherry Valley, N.Y., where he graduated from high school, and graduated from credit management training school.
  Mr. Maddox was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, moved to Indiana in 1965, and lived in several communities before moving to Muncie, Ind., in 1992.
  He worked as a credit manager for several companies, including Stewart Carey Glass, Modern Photo and Gas Tech in Speedway, where he was on the board of directors in 1997, and retired in September of 1998.
  He was a statistician for the Indiana Pacers for 13 years, starting with them at the beginning of ABA. He was a member of Hazelwood Christian Church, where he was a trustee, Credit Men's Association, and the Masonic Lodge in Ellenville, N.Y.
  Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Mary Hanlon Maddox; a daughter, Anne Voiles of Coatesville, Ind.; a granddaughter, Mari Courtney Voiles of Coatesville, Ind.; a sister, Jean Belt of Atlanta, Ga.; a niece; and a nephew.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilkie T. Maddox Sr. and Nettie Stiles Maddox, and a stepson, John Roberts Maddox.
  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Hazelwood Christian Church, Muncie, Ind. Cremation will follow with burial of cremains in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, Ind. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, and after 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the church.

  Miss Marian E. Wickham, daughter of Mrs. Edith M. Wickham, 56 Elm Street, Cooperstown, and the late Daniel Wickham, became the bride of Wilkie T. Maddox Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Maddox, Cherry Valley, in a ceremony September 25 in the Cooperstown Presbyterian Church.
  The Rev. Walter R. Graig, pastor, officiated. Mrs. Gerster Harwood, Cooperstown, was organist and Mrs. Floyd A. Allen, Cooperstown, vocal soloist.
  Given in marriage by her uncle. Harold McManus, the bride wore a strapless gown of embroidered nylon net fashioned with rhinestone inserts. The ensemble included tight bodice, full skirt of nylon over faille and long duster with mandarin collar. Her fingertip veil of illusion was attached to a tiara of seed pearls and rhinestones, and she carried a white prayer-book with white orchid marker.
   She was attended by her aunt, Mrs. Harry McManus Jr. of Cooperstown, whose ballerina-length gown was of ice blue faille and whose bouquet comprised pink roses and white chrysanthemums.
  The bride's mother chose a dress of rose linen with corsage of white roses. The birdegroom's mother selected black and pink with pink accessories and a white rose corsage.
  Due to the illness of Ernest Skelton, Cherry Valley, the bridegroom's father acted as best man. John V. Wheeler and Harry McManus Jr., both of Cooperstown, were the ushers.
  About 140 guests attended the reception in the church chapel.
  The former Miss Wickham was graduated from Cooperstown Central School and attended the Utica School of Commerce. She has been employed in the offices of the Welch Chevrolet Company, Cooperstown.
  The bridegroom is a graduate of the Cherry Valley Central School and is now an employe of the Public Loan Company, Inc, Sidney.
  Following the wedding trip to New York and Baltimore the couple will reside in Otego.

  The bride wore a dreis of blush rose Georgette, trimmed with chiffon velvet, a hat to match and carried a bouquet of pink roses. Mrs. Raymond Sponenburgh matron of honor, wore a dark blue dress with hat to match. Raymond Sponenburgh, brother of the groom was best man.
  Immediately after the ceremony the happy couple left for Utica, where a delicious wedding dinner was served at the Chinese Restaurant. On their return from a short wedding trip they will be at home in Index.

Previously he had been employed at the Sheffield Milk Company Plant, Cooperstown, for 18 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cooperstown. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Ruth) Kerzick, Cherry Valley RD, and Mrs. David (Beverly) Hensle, Cooperstown; five grandchildren; his father, Frank Wiltse, Cooperstown RD 3; and a sister, Mrs. Carl (Ruth) Greene, Cooperstown; and one nephew ...    James G. McManus, 96, of Esperance, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
  Born in Cooperstown Jan. 31, 1910, James was the son of the late Harry and Mabel (Grover) McManus.
  He was a line foreman employed by New York State Electric & Gas in Waterville for over 40 years, a position he retired from in 1972.
  James was a member of the Masonic Temple and Grace Church in Waterville. He was also an avid bowler, hunter and fisherman as well as skeet shooting and enjoyed the traveling he did with his wife Lilah throught the United States and they spent many winters in Tucson, AZ and Zepherhills, FL.
  His survivors include his children Eleanor Manion of West Winfield, Dolores Wines of Latham, Elaine Gerow of Cobleskill and Bruce McManus of Richfield Springs; one brother: Harry N. McManus of Fly Creek; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predecease by his son Grover "Mac" McManus.

Marriage Notes for Elaine McManus and Robert Gerow

  Elaine Marie McManus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McManus, Osborne Avenue, and Robert Gerow, son of Mr. Carl Gerow, Oriskany Falls, were married at 2 o'clock, July 26, 1958 in the Grace Episcopal Church.
  The bride, given in marriage by her brother, Grover McManus, was attired in a Chantilly lace waltz length gown, which had a boufount skirt and fitted jacket with a Queen Anne collar and long tapered sleeves. Her fingertip veil was edged with embroidery and was caught to a crown of seed pearls and rhinestones. She carried a bouquet of white carnations and pink rose buds.
  Mrs. Bernard Godfrey, sister of the bride, served as matron of honor. She wore a ballerina length gown of shrimp pink chiffon. Her  matching head piece was of tulle and rhinestones fastened to a pillbox clip. She carried a bouquet of white carnations, tied with pink streamers.
  Rebbaca Gerow, neice of the groom and Kevin Manion, nephew of the bride acted as flower girl and ring bearer. The flower girl was dressed in a white ballerina length gown and carried a basket of daisies. The ring barer was dressed in blue and carried a white satin pillow.
  Ted Burke brother of the groom attended his brother as best man. The ushers were, Fred Gerow, brother of the groom and Bernard Godfrey, brother-in-law of the bride.
  Following a short trip to Niagara Falls the couple will make their home on Buell Ave., Waterville, N. Y.

  Harold J. Truax, aged 61, of Fly Creek RD1, died Wednesday morning, December 16, in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, following a long illness.
  Mr. Truax was born January 17, 1909, at Oaksville, son of Virgil and myrtle (Eldred) Truax. He married Doris McManus, October 18, 1931, at Richfield Springs.
  He worked for many years for the Town of Otsego Highway department retiring about two years ago due to ill health. Prior to that he was employed by Remington Arms, Ilion.
  He was a member of the Cooperstown Fish and Game Club.
  Surviving are his wife; one daughter, mrs. Harold (Betty) Funke of South New Berlin; one son, James Truax of Fly Creek; five grandchildren; his mother of Fly creek; two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Inabell) Selan of Fly Creek and Mrs. Clarence (Hilda) Vroman, Sr. of Fly Creek, and several nephews.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Saturday, December 19, from Ingalls Funeral Home, Cooperstown, with the REv. Harold J. Saxton, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be later in Fly Creek Cemetery.
  Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience after 1 p.m. on Thursday and the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday . In lieu of flowers the family requests that those who wish may give to the Otsego County Unite of the American Cancer Society, 5 elm street, Oneonta or to the mohawk Emphysema Association, 23 South Street, Utica, N.Y.

  OCALA, Fla. — Edna H. McManus, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Ocala, Fla.
  She had lived in Ocala for about 1 1/2 years.
  She was born on April 3, 1913, in the town of Middlefield, a daughter of George and Cecel (Hubbard) Holiday.
  She married Harold McManus on June 15, 1938, in the town of Middlefield. He died in 1979.
  She and her husband had lived in Fly Creek for many years. She moved to Pioneer Street, Cooperstown, in 1983.
  She was a member of the Fly Creek and Cooperstown Methodist Churches.
  She graduated from Cooperstown High School.
  Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Potanko, Ocala, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Owen and Alice McManus, Cooperstown; four grandsons, Kevin Gohde, Fly Creek, Keith and Deborah Gohde, Irving, Texas, Patrick McManus, Cooperstown, and Michael and Heather McManus, Cederville; and six great-grandchildren.
  A memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer at the Fly Creek Cemetery.

  In nuptials performed Saturday afternoon in the First Presbyterian church, Elizabeth Jane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs: S. William Hathaway of North Hoosic. became the bride of Harry N. McManus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. McManus, of Fly Creek,
  The Rev. Emlen H. Zellers Jr., pastoe, officiated. Mrs. Gerster Harwood was organist.
  The bride wore a tailored suit of gray gabardine. Her ensemble included a blouse of white nylon, a white straw hat, navy accessories and a white gardenia corsage. She was given in marriage by her father.
  Miss Rosellen Ackert of Rhinebeck-on-Hudson was the bride's attendant. She wore a suit of check gabardine over a white nylon blouse, with pink hat and brown accessories. Her corsage was of pink roses and sweetpeas.
  The bride's mother selected a polka dot street length dress with blue hat and accessories. 'Her corsage was an American Beauty rose with sweetpeas. The bridegroom's mother chose navy blue, with navy-and-white hat and matching accessories and American Beauty rose corsage.
  William J. Ubner of Fly Creek was best man. Charles M. Hathaway, a brother of the bride, and Donald L. McManus. a brother of the bridegroom, were the ushers.
  About 50 guests attended the wedding breakfast, held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Butler, 67 Beaver street.
  The former Miss Hathaway was graduated from Hoosic Falls High school in 1949 but continued postgraduate study there. She is currently a junior at Oneonta State Teachers College.
  The bridegroom graduated in the Class of 1940 at Cooperstown Central school. He is a member of the maintenance staff at the Mary Imogene Bassett hospital.
  The couple is on a wedding trip in Niagara Falls, Buffalo and the Thousand Islands. They will live in Cooperstown.

 - Obituary (Binghamton Press, NY, Monday, June 1, 1959)
  Oneonta — An Otsego County man, who had left home some six weeks ago to find a job, was found dead yesterday in his car near Fly Creek.
  Paul A. Congdon, 45, of Hartwick RD 1, was believed by his family to have been out-of-state seeking employment.
  Otsego County Coroner Fisk Brooks of Oneonta issued a verdict of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.
  The body was found by Joseph Peplinskl of Fly Creek RD 1, in the car, parked in an abandoned gravel pit on the Jacob Potambo farm, while he was fishing in the Fly Creek Valley.
  According to the state police reports. Mr. Congdon had attached a hose to the exhaust and had turned it into the car.
  State police quoted his wife as saying he had left home April 25 to find work out-of-state and would communicate with her as soon as he had obtained employment.
The body was removed to the Ingalls Funeral Home in Cooperstown where arrangements were to be completed later today.
  Mr. Congdon was born March 31, 1914, in Springfield (Otsego County) the son of Thayer and Bertha McManus, Congdon. He married the former Miss Mary Tushler. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children, Josephine, Pauline and John, all at home; his father, Thayer Congdon of Richfield Springs; two brothers, Franklin and Vaughn, also of Richfield Springs; two sisters, Mrs. William Laymon of Morris and Mrs. Robert Jump of Balnbridge.
  Investigating were BCI Trooper Ralph J. . Charlton of Oneonta with Troopers John Gorence of Oneonta, Richard Juna of Richfield Springs and A. F. Heggelke of Cooperstown.
