 - Wedding Announcement (The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, NY, Thursday, October 3, 1929)
  Coming as a complete surprise to friends, announcement was made last night of the marriage of Miss Ruth S. Skakel, of 3 Oak street, this city, and Joseph F. Frederick of Amsterdam, which was solemnized Monday afternoon at 3 in the latter city. Rev. Father Nicholas Lawler performed the ceremony in St. Joseph's rectory.
  The attendants were Leroy Weaver and Mrs. Martha Devlne, both of Amsterdam, the latter a sister of the bridegroom. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Skakel, while Mr. Frederick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Frederick of Willard street, Amsterdam.
  The bride has been employed as stenographer in the office of Attorney Fayette E. Moyer of Johnstown, and Mr. Frederick is a clerk in the McAnn shoe store, Amsterdam.
  After the ceremony the couple left on a wedding tour and returned home last evening. Both are well known among a wide circle of friends all of whom will join in extending best wishes.

  Mrs. Bessie Lucretia Veeder Skakel, 85, wife of Floyd Skakel, Johnstown, died this morning at 4 o'clock at Littauer Hospital, Gloversvllle, where she had been a patient for several weeks. She had been in poor health for some time.
  Born In Fonda, June 22, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Willett and Meta Sutton Veeder. She was graduated from Fonda High School in 1929, and was married to Mr. Skakel in 1936 in Johnstown where she bad since resided.
  Surviving are one son, Floyd Skakel, Jr., Johnstown; four brothers, H a r o l d Veeder, Poughkeepsie, Ralph and Earl Veeder, Johnstown, and Howard Veeder, Fonda; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Dwelly and Mrs. Robert Ropeter, Johnstown, and
Mrs. Ruth Rubacha, Schenectady; one stepsister, Miss Geraldine Veeder, Boston, Mass., and several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

   Mrs. Ruth R. Skakel, 91, of County Highway 107, Johnstown, N.Y., died peacefully Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at Nathan Littauer Hospital following a brief illness. Born on October 26, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Hinkle and Katie Edick Hinkle.
  A lifelong area resident, Ruth graduated from Johnstown High School and became a professional glove maker with the former George Johns Inc. leather company. An active member of the Foothills United Methodist Church, Ruth worked tirelessly on church activities, especially dinners and fundraisers; and was a member of the adult Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Johnstown Senior Center, Rebecca Lodge and enjoyed cooking, baking, and making homemade ice cream. Above all, she loved her family and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
  Ruth was predeceased by her two husbands, Alfred C. Edel and Floyd H. Skakel; and many brothers and sisters.
  Her family includes: her son, Richard C. Edel of Johnstown, N.Y.; two stepsons, Floyd H. Skakel Jr. of New Windsor, N.Y. and Jack Skakel of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandchildren, Ryan C. Edel and his wife Dixie of Park City, Utah, and Elizabeth A. Edel of Johnstown, N.Y.; and one great-grandson, Conner R. Edel. Ruth also is survived by the family of Floyd and Marie Skakel, consisting of five grandchildren, Brian, James, Kevin, Laurie and Kim, as well as 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at 11 o'clock at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 North William Street, Johnstown, N.Y. with the Rev. Cynthia VanAllen presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Sandflats, Fonda, NY. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, August 6, 2010, at the funeral home.
  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth's memory to the Foothills United Methodist Church or the Shirley J. Luck Senior Citizens Center, Johnstown.

  ILION - Gordon F. Gifford, 82, of 365 Brewer Road, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica.
   Gordon was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Jordanville, the son of the late Ray C. and Helena (Werner) Gifford. He was educated in the Van Hornesville School. On Oct. 25, 1945, he was united in marriage with Ethel J. Walts at the Herkimer Methodist Church parsonage with the Rev. Fred Cotnam officiating.
  Gordon was employed as a cement truck operator with American Hardwall and then Marmet Block Works for many years and then drove truck for the town of Columbia until retiring in 1983.
  Gordon was very devoted to his family and is survived by his wife, Ethel; his children and their spouses, Joan and Francis Crandall of Ilion, Wayne and Daureen Gifford of West Winfield, Larry Gifford of Ilion, Nancy Riesel and her special friend Lenore Bernier of Palm Harbor, Fla., Randy and Kim Gifford of Ilion and Scott Gifford of Little Falls, a brother and sister-in-law, Derwood and Betsy Gifford of West Winfield; his grandchildren, Patience and her husband Bruce, Brian and his wife Marissa, Heidi, Heather, Cheryl and her husband Bryan, Valerie, Amy, Tricia and her husband Edward, Timothy Brien, T.J., Derrick, Jason, Victoria, Kaylene, Brianna, Samantha, Shawn, Brad, Joey, Teela, Nathaniel, Tyquan, Billy, Kayla, Myla, Aliandra and Yameen. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Leanne, Shayna, Kelly, Austin, Joey, Kimberly and Christopher, also many nieces and nephews.
  Funeral services for Mr. Gifford will be held Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St., Ilion. Pastor Charles Fitch will officiate. Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in the spring.
  Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

  Mr. and Mrs. Louis Frederick Clarke Jr. are .on a wedding trip to Cape Cod and New England following their wedding Saturday at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church.
  The Rev. Bertram Humphries of Holland Patent, once pastor of the church, officiated.
  The bride is the former Nancy Lee Getman, daughter of Mrs. Louise E. Getman of 10 Artillery Lane, and the late Wesley A. Getman. Mr. Clarke is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis F. Clarke Sr., 49 Artillery Lane.
  Mrs. Sylvia Eggleston sang "The Lord's Prayer" and "Because."
  Given in marriage by her uncle, Marvin Morenus of Gloversville, the bride wore a gown of silk organza and chantilly lace over taffeta. The fitted bodice was styled with rounded neckline, long tapered sleeves, and a Bertha collar of chantilly lace that extended into a waistline drape above a full chapel train. A matching Dior bow accented with seed pearls held her bouffant veil of French silk illusion. She carried a cascade of lilies.
  Matron of honor was the bride's sister Mrs. Martha Dykema of Ridgefield Conn. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Susan Delillo, Mrs. Sandra Bowers and Mrs. Vivian Leaveil. The honor attendant wore a formal sheath of georgette crepe in soft orchid, banded with floral braid. The attendants wore identical gowns in soft mauve pink. Their headpieces were matching Dior bows with halo veils. They carried cascade bouquets of glamelias.
   Russell Dykema, nephew of the bride, was ring bearer. His sister, Karen Dykema, was flowergirl.
   D. Alan Starling was best man. Ushers were the bride's brother, James German, Robert B. Eggleston, James Hammel and John Baker. All are from Baldwinsville. The bride's mother wore a 2-piece outfit in delicate blue matching accessories and a corsage of deep purple passino flowers. The mother of the bridegroom chose a celery chiffon dress, matching accessories cymbidum orchids.
  A reception for 200 guests was held at Firesid lnn
  A graduate of Baldwinsville schools and Onondaga Community College, the new matron was employed as secretary to the personnel director, Syracuse Memorial Hospital. She will attend the State University College, Oneonta, in September. Mr. Clarke
is also a Baldwinsville schools alumnus and earned his bachelor's degree at Syracuse University. He did graduate work at State University College, Oswego, and is a member of the faculty at West Canada Valley Central School, Newport.
   Pre-nuptial events included a shower given by her aunt, Mrs. Dorothy Church; a dinner by Mrs. Walter Leavell; a shower by Mrs. John Thompson; a shower by Susan Delillo and Judi Church; a bridesmaids' luncheon by Carol Harrington; and a rehearsal dinner by Mr. Clarke's parents.
  The couple will reside on Oswego Rd. until fall when they will move to Herkimer.
