Marriage Notes for Jack Nellis Waffle and Rosemary Herb

FT. PLAIN - Miss Rosemary A. Herb of 3 Dairy Street, Ft. Plain, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Herb, also 3 Dairy Street, and Jack N. Waffle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvey B. Waffle, Ft. Plain, R. D., were united inmarriage Saturday at 2 P. M. in St. Mark • Lutheran Church, Canajoharie, with Rev. Albert P. Schilke, pastor performing the ceremony.
The church was decorated with white asters and candles on the alter, flowers in the windows, white candles ad white satin bows on the center pews. The organist, Mrs. Avery Van Slyke, played the traditional wedding music. The soloist was Mrs. Earl Robbinis, who sang "Through The Years" "I Love Thee" and "The Lord's Prayer."
The bride who was given in marriage by her father, Richard Herb, Gloversville, wore a gown of shite satin, tight fitted bodice, sweetheart neckline, long sleves, full skirt with a three-yard chapple train and wore a nylon net veil, caughter with orange blossoms.
The bridesmaids were Miss Jandet Abel and Miss Edith Jordan, Ft. Plain, who wore gowns of green satin with matching head bands and carried shower bouquets of yellow asters. The junior bridesmaid, Bonnie Lee Alter, cousin of the bridegroom, wore a gown of yellow satin and carried a bouquet of yellow asters. The flower girl, Sharon Herb, cousin of the bride, wore a dress of yellow satin and threw petals down the aisle from a decorated basket.
The best man was Charles Vosburgh, Jr., Ft. Plain R, D. The ushers were Robert Mallett, Palatine, Walter Nestle, Jr., Nelliston; Richard Herb, Ft. Plain, brother of the bride; Hugh Pomella Ft. Plain, cousin of the bride. The ring bearer was Wayne Granger, Ft. Plain, cousin of the bridegroom.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church parlors, which were decorated with white flowers. The couple left on a wedding trip. For traveling the bride wore a suit ot yellow linen, white accessories and white orchid.
After Aug. 12 the couple will be at home, R D. 8, Ft. Plain, The bride attended Ft. Plain High School and is employed in the filing department of the Beech-Nut Packing Company, Canajoharie. The bridegroom attended Canajoharie High School and served two years in the armed forces, eight months of which was spent in Japan. He is employed in the planning department of the Beech-Nut Packing Company.

Fort Plain - Patricia Joy Rickard, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Rickard, Nelliston, and John W Rickard, Fort Plain, became the bride of Ellis David Elwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Ellis Elwood, Starkville, Saturday at the Rickard home at Nelliston. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. E R. Kruizenga, grandfather of the bride.
The bride was given in marriage by her uncle, Robert Kruizenga, Buffalo, wore her grandmother's wedding gown of white batiste, trimmed with tucking and embroidered applique, and a threequarter length veil with an embroidered headpiece. She carried an old-fashioned bouquet of carnations, lilies of the valley, gardenias and white lace.
The maid of honor, Miss Sylvia Sweet, Northville, a friend of the bride, wore an aqua gown of net and lace, and a coronet of American beauty roses. Her bouquet was a fan of white lace and American beauty roses.
A brother of the bridegroom, John Elwood, Starkville, was best man. Charles Goody, Tribes Hill, was the usher.
A reception was held after the ceremony. When the couple left on a wedding trip through the New England States, the bride wore a battle-green and white print sharftung dress and a white wool short coat, white Panama hat with green veil and a gardenia corsage.
Mrs. Elwood is a graduate of Fort Plain High school and hd nurses traing at Amsterdam City hospital. The bridegroom is a graduate of Van Hornesville High school, and the State Institute of Agriculture at Cobleskill.

ST. JOHNSVIBLE - Gordon W. Powell, 62, of 27 Williams Street, died unexpectedly Saturday morning while vacationing at St. Croix, Virgin Islands.
He was born Aug. 6, 1914 in St. Johnsville, son of Randall and Edna Sanders Powell. He was a welder in various area factories for a number of years and at one time was employed by Palatine Dye Company of St. Johnsville. In May he retired from Mohawk Data Sciences in Herkimer.
He married the former Ann Ewing of Scotia in 1940.
He was a member of the Grace Congregational Church and a former member of St. Johnsville Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors besides his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Franklin MeGoogan of Lafayette, Ind., and a son, Bruce Powell of Miami, Queensland, Australia.

Announcement has been made here of the marriage of Miss Anne Ewing, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ewing of Scotia, and G. Wallace Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs Randall Powell of William street, St. Johnsville. The ceremony was performed in the First Baptist church at Scotia on December 28, by the pastor.
The bride's sister Mrs. Russell Somers, Scotia, was matron of honor, and Miss Dorothy Letts of the same place was bridesmaid. Henry Davis of this village, was best man, and ushers were Willard Ottman of this village and the bride's brother, James Ewing of Scotia.
The bride was given in marriage by her father, She wore a princess style gown of white satin with fingertip veil of illusion net, and carried a bouquet of white roses. The bride's attendants wore princess style gowns of blue and rasin taffeta and carried colonial bouquets of pink roses.
The bride is a graduate of Scotia high school, class of 1933, and Oneonta Norman school, class of 1936. She has been a member of the grammar school faculty in this village for the past five years.
The bridegroom was graduated from St. Johnsville high school in 1933, and the Lincoln School of Welding in Cleveland, O. He has been employed locally.
A reception was held after the ceremony at the Riverwood Inn, at which 40 guests, including some local friends were present.

Barbara Mary Brown, 86, of Sherwood Acres Drive, passed away on Sturday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2006, in Valley Health Services Inc. after a long illness.
She was born on Feb. 3 1919, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Frank F. and Grace Lloyd Folts. Barbara was raised in Herkimer and was a gratuate of Herkimer High School. She furthered her education by graduating from Utica School of Commerce.
On May 5, 1951, she married Robert Brown in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer. The Rev. Fred Cotnam officiated. During their marriage she and her husband had resided in Fort Plain, Endwell and Richfield Springs before returning to live in Herkimer. For ten years she worked as an aide for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Herkimer, retiring in 1985.
Barbara will always be remembered as being full of love, life and laughter. She was happiest when she was surrounded by hermany friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The special memories of her will always live in our hearts.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Robert; a son, Charles Robert Brown of Oakland, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Wener of Nelliston and Cynthia Cheney of Essex Junction, Vt.;five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Folts (former Herkimer County Sheriff), Lt.Col. John Folts and son-in-law Donald Wener.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, May 5, at 11a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Wrightson Tongue, pastor First United Methodist Church will officiate.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory with donations to Valley Health Services Inc. or Hospice Inc.

Herkimer, N.Y.
Mary Josephine (Mary Jo) Folts , 87, passed away peacefully in her home on Sept. 26, 2012. She was born in 1924 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, the daughter of Gilbert and Josephine Morken.
While in Idaho, she attended local schools along with her older brothers, Paul and David. In 1941 her family moved to Jackson, Calif., and Mary Jo graduated from Holy Rosary Academy in Woodland, Calif. in 1942. She graduated from Dominican College in San Rafael, Calif., in 1946 and then taught school for one year in Jackson, Calif. During her last year of college, she met Richard (Dick) W. Folts, a Second Lt. in the Army Air Corp that was stationed in the Bay Area. They were married on May 11 1947 ,in Jackson, Calif. After moving to Herkimer in 1947, Mary Jo taught school briefly. They purchased their home on Margaret Street in 1950, where they raised her four children. When Dick was elected county sheriff in 1963, the family moved to the sheriff’s residence within the 1834 Historic Herkimer County Jail. In addition to raising her children, Mary Jo was also employed as a bookkeeper for the town of Herkimer and a matron for the county jail. The new jail was completed in 1977 and they returned to their home on Margaret Street. Dick retired in 1981 and they spent many happy summers at their cottage on Canadarago Lake while hosting countless family gatherings, maintained beautiful gardens and were able to relax and enjoy themselves. Mary Jo’s daughter Kristin was married to Mitchell Keno on the camp property in 1975. Dick passed away on March 2, 1989.
Mary Jo continued to stay very active donating her time at St. Francis de Sales School, playing bridge with her friends, sailing, dancing and listening to music with her good friend Jim Marrone and continuing to host family gatherings. She loved to play cribbage, especially with her four grandchildren. She baked pies for her daughter Barbie and son-in-law Rocky’s restaurant, The Waterfront Grille, where you can purchase “Mom’s” raspberry pie on the menu. She liked to take walks with her friends and Tuesday girl’s night out with her two daughters became a regular activity.
Mary Jo was a kind, concerned and trusted friend to all that got to know her, a devoted mother to her children and their families and her grand dogs. She always maintained her strong faith to the end of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Kristin and Mitchell Keno, of Herkimer; their daughter, Dr. Lisa Keno and husband, Dr. John Overton, of Easton, Conn.; her son, Thomas and JoEllen Folts, of Broadalbin; their children, Michele Folts, of Boston, Mass.; Katie Folts, of Madison, Wis., and Matthew Folts, of Stratton, Vt.; daughter, Barbie and Rocky Fiato, of Herkimer; and son, David Folts and wife, Laura Kringen, of Portland, Oregon.
Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor. will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday morning from 8:30 until 9:30 am.
Mary Jo’s family would like to thank the staff of Hospice Care for their kind treatment of their mom. Contributions in Mary Jo’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Lydia Bond Shearer was born Nov. 5, 1918 in Ilion, New York, daughter of the late William and Grace Callan Bond, sister of Elizabeth Bond Mackie. She attended New York State College for Teachers and graduated in 1941 with a Degree in English. She married John Kennedy Shearer in 1943, who pre-deceased her in 2002. She and John resided in Waterbury, CT where they raised their four children, Jean (Lexington, KY), Ellen (Scarborough, Ontario), Nancy (Rangeley, ME) and Greig (West Hartford, CT). She is also survived by four grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews and their families. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Waterbury for 50 years, as well as a dedicated volunteer in numerous capacities for the Waterbury YWCA and Mattatuck Museum. Lydia was an avid reader, gardener and lover of the outdoors; she spent many summers at the family camp in Oquossoc, ME. She has been a resident of Seabury Retirement Community since 2000.
Arrangements- A Memorial Service is planned for July 21, 2012 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 16 Church St., Waterbury, CT, 06702 at 2 PM There are no calling hours. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 9 Holmes Ave., 06710 is in charge of the arrangements. The marriage of Miss Lydia Sherman Bond, daughter of and Mrs. William L. Bond, Ardsley Rd., Schenectady, and John Kennedy Sheerer, Albany Medical School senior, son of Mrs. William A. Shearer, Newburgh, and the late Mr. Shearer, was Saturday in St. George's Episcopal Church, Schenectady. The Rev. George F. Rambach officiated.
The bride wore pale ivory satin with tight bodice and tightly shirred skirt with a long train. She wore a coronet with long tulle veil and carried white roses and bouvardia. Miss Elizabeth Bond, maid of honor for her sister, wore moss green taffeta with matching hat, and carried pale pink peonies.
Robert E. Shellmandine, Schoharie, was best man. Ushers were Robert P. Coolidge, Carlton; John Eckel and Frederick Wood, Albany, and Henry Tripp, Watertown.
The bride is a graduate of State College for Teachers, where she was a member of Psi Gamma. Mr. Shearer also is a State College graduate and a member of Kappa Delta Rho, Kappa Phi Kappa and Nu Sigma. He is a member of the U. S. Enlisted Reserve Corps.
