  ST, JOHNSVILLE — A mother, who contracted polio while caring for her young son,  who had been stricken with the same disease, died yesterday morning in Houston, Tex., where she had resided  two months.
  The victim was Mrs. Janet Hay, 36 , wife of Dr. Richard C. Hay, who is connected with the Houston Medical Center. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W . W. Hopkins of St. Johnsville. who left from the Oneida airport last night to fly to Houston.
  The Hay's oldest boy was stricken with polio recently and Mrs. Hay, a registered nurse, was taking care of him She was taken ill and diagnosis showed she had contracted polio. She was in the hospital apparently making satisfactory progress. Death, it was reported, came unexpectedly at 4 yesterday morning.
  Mrs. Hay was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Aug. 21, 1918, the daughter of W. S. and Mrs. Eunice Saltsman Hopkins. Her mother is a former St. Johnsville resident. The family returned here when Janet was a small girl. She was graduated from the St. Johnsville High school and received her degree in nUrsing from the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
  Shortly after the outbreak of World War 2 she enlisted in the Army and was in the second hospital unit to be sent overseas from this country. For some time she was stationed in Oxford, England. She was on of those going ashore at Normandy on the second day of the invasion of the continent. When hostilities ceased in Europe, she returned to America and was stationed for a time at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. and Letterman Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif.
 Next she was assigned to an Army Hospital in China and remained there until the conflict in Asia made it necessary for her to be evacuated to Tokyo, where she was assigned to another hospital unit. It was in Tokyo in August 1949 that she was married to Dr. Hay. Both had the rank of captain at that time. Her total service in the Army was nine years.
  Upon leaving the Army Dr. and Mrs. Hay resided in Worchester Mass., until two months ago when they visited her parents for a short time and then left for Houston, where the doctor was to be associated with the medical center.
  Besides her parents here, she is survived by three children, Richard G, William H., and Anne Hopkins Hay and one brother, Alvin S. Hopkins of Castro Valley, Calif.
  The funeral arrangements will be announced.

   Announcement has been made of the marriage of Capt. Janet Elizabeth Hopkins. ANCm daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Stephenson Hopkins, and Capt. Richard Carman Hay, AMC Aug. 20 in St. Luke's Chapel. 49th General Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.
  Capt. Hay is a graduate of the University of Vermmt College of Medicine class of 1946, and interned at the Bishop DeGoesbriand Hospital. He studied anesthesiology for a year, and last year was stationed in Nanking, China, in the Army Medical Corps. He is the grandson of Maj. Charles L. Woodbury of Burlington.

  FORT MYERS. Fla. Funeral services were held for Walter Modes, 71, formerly of Wayne, N.J., who died Saturday.
  Mr. Modes was born in New York City and lived in Wayne 45 years before moving to Florida.
  He was the owner of Modes for Men, a clothing store in Wayne's Preakness Shopping Center. He was a former mayor and, councilman of Wayne and past president of the Preakness Shopping Center Merchants Association. He was a member of the Sigma Kappa fraternity of Union College, New York and the board of governors of Packanack Lake.
  Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Roantrie; a son, Bruce of Wayne; and two granddaughters.
  Funeral services were in Florida. Local arrangements were by Moore's Home for Funerals Wayne Chapel.

Bruce Modes, USAF, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Modes, 48 Valley View Ter, Packanack Lake and Greenwood Lake.
  A reception followed at the Towers. Cedar Grove. After honeymoon trip to the New England states the newly weds will temporarily make their home at Westover Air Force Base, Mass. In January they will move to Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, where Lt Modes will be stationed.
  The bride was gowned in silk organza designed with a reembroidered Alencon lace bodice and a cathedral train. A pearl headdress caught her veil and she carried white crysantehmums and stephanotis.
  Miss Bernadette McInerney was maid of honor and Mrs. Aaron Schulman was brides maid. Both wore blue organza gowns with matching bow head dresses and carried cascades of chrysanthemums and carnations. Misses Virginia and Valerie Moore, sisters of the bride, were junior bridesmaids in pink silk organza dresses. They wore pink velvet ribbon headdresses and carried nosegays of chrysanthemums and carnations.
  John McManus was best man and Victor Ludmerer and Thomas Paul ushered. Mrs. Modes received a B.A. degree in biology from Paterson State College and was formerly with the A&P Tea Co., Wayne.
  Lt Modes holds a B.A. degree in sociology from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa.

  WEST SPRINGFIELD - Carolyn (Waring) Blair 68 of West Springfield an active member of area peace groups died yesterday at the Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
  Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Oct 16, 1918, she had lived in Poultney, Vt., and in Springfield since 1953. She moved to West Springfield two years ago.
  She was a graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and received her Batcheror's degree in home economics from Teacher's College at Columbia University in New York City.
  Mrs Blair was a program representative at the Housing Allowance Program in Springfield before retiring. She had previously worked for Child and Family Services in Springfield and the Springfield Planning Department.
  She was a member of the American Friends Service Committee in Northampton, the Trap Rock Peace Center in South Deerfield, and the Hampden County Peace Coalition and the Peace Resource Center both in Springfield.
  She was also an active member of the Task Force for World Peace and Justice in conjunction with the Springfield Council of Churches.
  She was a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield.
  She leaves her husband of 47 years Norman Blair; two sons, Dr. Donald W. Blair of New Hyde Park, N.Y., and Kenneth E. Blair of Cambridge; a daughter Janet Blair Grossner of Fords, N.J.; a sister Emma Walbridge of Austin, Texas; and a grandchild.
  A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church.
  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

  Norman Blair, a retired insurance executive and former resident of Lynbrook, died Feb. 17 in Springfield, Mass. He was 84.
  Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Blair moved to Lynbrook in 1918, graduating from Lynbrook High School in 1929.
  A longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Mr. Blair was a lifelong pacifist who objected to military service in World War II, opting to work in hospital in North Carolina.
  His first wife Carolyn Waring Blair, of Rockville Centre died in 1987. Survivors include his wife Carolyn Sinclair Hale; two sons, Dr. Donald Waring Blair, Madisonville, Ky., and Kenneth Edward Blair of Cambridge; a daughter, Janet Blair Grossner, of Allentown, Pa.; a brother, Raymond Blair, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; and three grandchildren.

  The groom is the son of the late Norman J. Blair and Carolyn Waring Blair of Springfield, Mass.
   Nuptial music was provided by Raymond Grimm of Madisonville.
  Given in marriage by her daughters Sarah Ruth and Katherine Ashby, the bride chose a tea length taupe silk chemise dress. She carried a traditional Victorian nosegay.
  Sarah Ruth and Katherine Ashby Hawkins served as maids of honor.
 Kenneth E. Blair of Cambridge, Mass., brother of the groom, served as best  man.
  The Hawkins' home was decorated with Boston fers, red rose bouquets, magnolias, and was highlighted with magnolia foliage.
  A reception followed the ceremony at the Hawkins' home. The two-tiered wedding cake was decorated in a lace motif and adorned with red roses. The groom's cake was chocolate with frosted grapes.
  Dr. Blair, is a graduate of Harvard University in Cambridge, and New York University School Medicine in New York, N.Y. He is in private practice in Paragould, Ark.
  Following a wedding trip to  Cape Cod and Boston, Mass., the couple resides in Parabould, Ark.

  Jean Fox Hartshorne, 78, of Catawba Island, Ohio, formerly of Metuchen, died Thursday at Edgewood Manor Nursing Center in Port Clinton, Ohio.
   She was born on June 4, 1923 in Fresno, to the late Charles and Gladys (Harra) Fox. She was a graduate of Highland Park High School. She married W. Justin Hartshorne on Feb. 28, 1942 in New Jersey. W. Justin died on Dec. 2, 1980. She was the owner/operator of The Wool Shop, a needlework store that started in New Brunswick and then relocated to Port Clinton, Ohio in 1966.
  She was a charter member of Firelands Presbyterian Church in Port Clinton. Prior to moving to Ohio, Mrs. Hartshorne was active in local politics, served on the board of the Young Men's Christian Association in Metuchen and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames. She was an avid reader with a great interest in crafts, genealogy and wildlife conservation. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancie Fox LaRoche.
  She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Riedmaier and her husband, Randy R. Riedmaier, of Catawba Island, Ohio; a son, Robert Hartshorne, also of Catawba Island; three nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Firelands Presbyterian Church in Port Clinton, Ohio. There will be no visitation.
  Arrangements are by the Gerner-Wolf-Brossia-Marsh Funeral Home, Port Clinton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Catawba Island EMS, 4822 E.   Nancy and Tammy Sweeting, Hilton, were junior bridesmaids, and Paula Sweeting, Hilton, flower girl
  William Britton, Williamstown, served as best man, and guests were seated by Paul Birmingham, Gary Finnerty and Robert Wheeler, all of Williamstown. Richard and Timothy Sweeting and Paul Sweeting also participated.
  A reception for 250 guests took place at Finn's Hotel, Florence, after which the couple honeymooned in the southern part of
the state. They are residing with the bridegroom's parents on Florence Hill Road until spring when they plan to move to Williamstown.
  The bride took her vows wearing a bouffant gown of silk peau de sue fashioned with sabrina neckline edged with lace, long tapered sleeves with lace exending from the fitted bodice over the shoulders The bouffant skirt was princess paneled with lace falling into a chapel train. She wore a matching cluster headpiece holding a cathedral veil with face veil of illusion.
  The honor attendant was attired in a floor-length gown of gold and custard gold fashioned with an empire bodice, scoop neckline and Venise velvet roses edging the waistline and extending to the hemline of the wrap panel at the center back of her crepe skirt. She wore a matching velvet cluster headpiece with bouffant face veil.
  The bridesmaids were similarly dressed in emerald velvet, their gowns featuring velvet bodices and mint green skirts. They wore matching
headpieces of velvet.
  The bride's mother was attir­ed in mint green crepe with dark green accessories, and the Bridegroom's mother selected a vinter wool sheath with red accesories. Mrs. Vale wore a corsage of yellow roses, and Mrs. Mulvaney's flowers were red roses.
  For going away on her honeymoon trip Mrs. Burdick wore a loden green tweed suit trimmed with suede, and brown accessories.
  Pre-nuptial events in the bride’s honor included showers given by Mrs. Edward Mulvaney, and bridal attendants Mrs. Harriet Sweeting and Mrs. George Johnson
  The new matron is a graduate of Camden Central School and Mohawk School of Beauty Culture, and is self-employed as a beautician.

  George C. Ripka, 81, of 6461 Lamphear Road, was pronounced dead at Rome Hospital today after being stricken at home.
  He was employed in the maintenance department of the Oneida County Hospital.
  Born Aug. 18, 1909, at Fish Creek Landing, he was the son of Christopher and Lulu Kilts Ripka.
  He served in World War II. Before coming here six years ago, he resided at Camden and Fish Creek Landing.
  Mr. Ripka married Florence Sawyer West on June 27, 1965 in Taberg. She died July 27, 1970.
  Mr. Ripka was a member of the Vienna United Methodist Church and the Camden Post Veterans of Foreign Wars.
  Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Patrick (Mary Lou) Morinetti, Syracuse; two sons, James Ripka, Syracuse, and Donald Ripka, Altmar; three sisters, Mrs. George (Emma) Woodcock, Fish Creek Landing; Mrs. Glen (Camilla) Henry, Waterville, and Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Winters, Canastota, and six grandchildren.
  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

  Mrs. Carmella R. Henry, formerly of Waterville, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio.
  She was born Dec. 12, 1913, in Vienna, N.Y., daughter Christopher and Lulu Ripka Kilts. She was married in 1958 to Glenn (Pete) Henry. He died July 24, 1981. She resided in Poland, since 1987. She was a member of the Waterville Baptist Church.
  Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Lulu) DelVecchio, of Poland, OH; two sons, Francis Lohr, of Syracuse  Arthur Woolsey of Brookfield; another son, Romeyn Ripka died August, 1945; 11 grandchidren, nine gresa-grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held at the Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals at a time to be announced. Spring interment will be in Grove Cemetery, Higginsville. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Waterville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

  CAMDEN — Romeyn Ripka, 16, formerly of Vienna, died in San Fernando, Calif., Aug. 18, 1945, as the result of an airplane accident.
  He was attending Camden High School when he received word last spring to join his mother in California. While in California, he joined the air cadets and had made several solo flights. Saturday, while flying, his plane caught fire and he was burned to death.
  He had been a resident of Camden for several years, making his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Ripka.
   Surviving besides his grandparents, are his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Woolsey, a sister, Lulu, and two brothers, Francis and Arthur Ripka, all of San Fernando, Calif.
  The body will arrive in Oneida Sunday morning and will be taken to the B. A. Sanborn & Son Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

   He was of the Protestant faith, and was a member of the Eastern Milk Producers Association and Agway Corp.

  George C. Ripka, 81, of 6461 Lamphear Road, was pronounced dead at Rome Hospital today after being stricken at home.
  He was employed in the maintenance department of the Oneida County Hospital.
  Born Aug. 18, 1909, at Fish Creek Landing, he was the son of Christopher and Lulu Kilts Ripka.
  He served in World War II. Before coming here six years ago, he resided at Camden and Fish Creek Landing.
  Mr. Ripka married Florence Sawyer West on June 27, 1965 in Taberg. She died July 27, 1970.
  Mr. Ripka was a member of the Vienna United Methodist Church and the Camden Post Veterans of Foreign Wars.
  Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Patrick (Mary Lou) Morinetti, Syracuse; two sons, James Ripka, Syracuse, and Donald Ripka, Altmar; three sisters, Mrs. George (Emma) Woodcock, Fish Creek Landing; Mrs. Glen (Camilla) Henry, Waterville, and Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Winters, Canastota, and six grandchildren.

was married to Camilla Ripka. He came to the Waterville area in 1946. For many years he was a lumber jack for H H Yeagle of Leonardsville and for 18 years he was with Doeskin Super Fine Products of Clayville. He is of the Methodist Faith. He was a U S Army Veteran of WW II.
  Besides, his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs Glen (Ora) Hartford of Shunk, Pa.; one son, Miles Henry
of Shunk, Pa. one step-daughter, Mrs Joseph (Lou) DeVecchio, Waterville; two step-sons. Francis Lohr of Syracuse and Arthur Woolsey of Brookfield; two sisters. Mrs. Kathryn Barbour and Mrs William (Helen) Brooks, both of Star Route, Trout Run, Pa.; three brothers. Robert of Canton, Pa. and Lee and Herman of Star Route, Trout Run, Pa.; seven grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

  St. Roney Dies Of Gunshot Wound Young Man Killed in Accident at Texas Camp: Was Coach Line Driver
  Oneida, Oct 18 - Raymond Roney of State Bridge, has been advised by the War Department of the death of his twin brother, S/Sgt. Robert G. Roney, member of the 475the Service Squadron of the Army Air Corps, Pyote, Texas, on Saturday in Balmohea, Texas, from accidental gunshot wounds. The body will be brought to this city for services.
  The sergeant was born in Oneida, July 21, 1911, son of the late George and Jessie Roney. He attended St. Patrick's Parochial School and was a communicant of that church. He entered the service in January, 1943. Roney was employed by Oneida Ltd., and then became a driver for the Central New York Coach Lines, on the Syracuse Utica run, on which he served five years.
  Surviving is a daughter, ‘Elizabeth Ann Roney, 7, of Higginsville; two brothers, Raymond and Cpl. Michael Roney who is serving in North Africa; two sisters, Mrs. Francis Roser of Cleveland, O., and Mrs. Charity Towne of Oneida.

  CANASTOTA Elizabeth Pardy, 79, formerly of Carter Road and High Street, died Thursday morning, Jan. 19, 2017, in the Utica Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she had been a resident for over two years.
  Born in Canastota, on Feb. 13, 1937, she was the daughter of Robert and Eleanor Ripka Roney. A lifelong resident of Canastota, Liz was a graduate of Canastota High School. She married Roy D. Pardy, in Whitelaw Presbyterian Church, on Feb. 23, 1972. Roy died on Dec. 7, 2007.
  Liz was a beautician, by profession, and also was employed by the Canastota School Systems. She was of the Protestant faith and loved her grandchildren and baking and enjoyed dancing, camping and ceramics.
  Surviving are two daughters, two step daughters and their husbands, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three brothers ; and several nieces and nephews.
  Funeral services will be private, at the request of Elizabeth, for the immediate family from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 300 S. Peterboro St., Canastota, with the Rev. Donna Chapman, officiating. Interment will be made in Grove Cemetery, Verona. There are no public hours of visitation.
