Carol Virginia Van Slyke Lazo departed life March 18, 2011, on her own terms.
The daughter of Clague A. Van Slyke and Frances L. Williams, she was born in Benson, Minnesota on September 16, 1927.
A graduate of Benson High School and Macalester College, as a young woman she traveled through Mexico, Italy, France and Germany, where she met and married Kent Lazo during the Korean War. With him, she raised four children in Denver, Cincinnati, Houston, London (U.K.) and Stokes Poges, Bucks, England.
She lived the last decades of her life in Breckenridge, Alma and Grand Junction, Colorado. She was a reader, writer, painter, antiquer, volunteer fire fighter (with the Red, White & Blue), bird-lover, liberal thinker and "splutterer". She also loved Cheetos, Diet Dr. Pepper, Hersheys chocolate, cable TV, the BBC, crossword puzzles, the New York Times Book Review and her land on the Uncompaghre. Marlyn, Betty and Lola were the kindred-spirited friends of her youth, adulthood and old age.
She is predeceased by her older brother, Clague A. Van Slyke II; niece, Melissa Van Slyke, and dear companions, Tasha, Maggie, Max and Buddy.
Carol is survived by children, Sandy (Don Layton), Chris, Suzi (Dave Newkirk), and Jeff (Jill); beloved grandsons, Todd and Ross Layton and Tommy Newkirk; cherished granddaughter, Liz-E Lazo, and step-granddaughters, Sady and Bonny Wootten; sister(-in-law), Sally Van Slyke and nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great -nephews in Arizona.
For enhancing the quality of her life during her last years, Carol's family wishes to thank Harold, Barb, Mollie and Letha, and the staff of Columbine Animal Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Buddy and Carol Lazo Fund at Roice-Hurst Humane Society (PO Box 510, Clifton CO 80520) would be deeply appreciated.

David Stegemann, 60
A Celebration of Life service for David W. Stegemann of Lakefield was held Oct. 4, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Lakefield, with Rev. Daniel Brewer officiating. Burial was in the Lakefield Cemetery. David Stegemann died Oct. 1, 2006, at Sunset Cottage in Worthington.
Casket bearers were Roger Lind, James Resch, Pat Barnett, Tom Timko, Dick Noyes and Terry Keller. Peg Amendt was the organist with Kent Mickelson as soloist. The Hansen Funeral Home of Lakefield handled the funeral arrangements.
David Werner Stegemann, son of Werner and Helen (Perkins) Stegemann, was born on July 8, 1946, in Northfield, Minn. David received his education at Mountain Lake, Castle Rock, Northfield and graduated from Wabasha High School in 1964. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture education from the University of Minnesota in 1968. Following his education, David began teaching agriculture at Okabena. He married Mary Wissink on Aug. 21, 1969, at Sheldon, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Lakefield, and David continued to teach in Okabena for six years. He then farmed in partnership with Curtis Pietz for seven years. In 1983, he began working for AgStar Financial Services and most recently, served as a senior leasing specialist. David and his sons also operated Stegemann Lawn Care for several years.
David was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lakefield and served on many church committees. He was also a member of Lakefield Lions, Prudence Masonic Lodge No. 97 of Windom, the National Corn Growers, Soybean Growers, and Pork Producers, and had held various leadership positions in the organizations. He was also a supporter of the Jackson County 4-H and FFA programs. David loved being a salesman, talking to people, playing cards and games, mowing lawns and following the activities of his sons.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mary of Lakefield; three sons, Michael of Danbury, Conn., Aaron and his wife Jody of Marion, Ark., and Adam of Minneapolis; two brothers, Douglas and his wife, Lori Stegemann of Cannon Falls, and Larry and his wife Debbie Stegemann of Wabasha; a sister-in-law, Connie Stegemann of Austin; and other relatives and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul; an infant brother; and an infant son.

Irene E. Hedlund, 83, Sartell
March 19, 2004 Irene E. Hedlund, age 83, Sartell, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, St. Cloud.
Visitation will be Monday, March 22, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. American Legion Auxiliary prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud.
Irene Hedlund was born May 15, 1920, in Plover, Wis. to George and Gertrude (Pennbecker) Miller. Prior to moving to Waite Park the family lived in Wisconsin for six years. Irene graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1939. Irene attended Waite Park Methodist Church, where she met her husband, Lloyd Sanford Hedlund. They were married in Los Angeles, Calif. on February 21, 1942.
Lloyd was inducted into the Army and she followed him from San Jose, Calif. to North Carolina to Washington, DC. They then moved to Texas and then Florida when Lloyd was sent over seas. They moved back to Minnesota where she was a catering chef for the St. Cloud Country Club. Irene was known for her sweet rolls and rice pudding.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #428, Waite Park, Order of Eastern Star Granite Chapter No. 5, and the First Presbyterian Church. Irene was active in Primetimers, Bible study, bake sales, Cursillo and Meals on Wheels.
Irene and Lloyd spent 23 winters in Texas and they resided at Little Watab Lake north of St. Joseph, living there for 25 years prior to moving to the Country Manor apartments in Sartell.
Survivors include her children, Garey (Nancy) Hedlund of Richfield, David (Paula) Hedlund of St. Paul, Susan (Donald) Stocker of St. Cloud, and Cabot (Kris) Hedlund of St. Joseph; nine grandchildren, Molly, Jason, Wanda, Todd, Cole, Jesse, Stacy, Brady and Paige; three great grandchildren, Alex, Alison and Kayla; sister, Elaine S. Nelson of St. Cloud, and her children, Barbara and James; and a half brother, Robert Miller of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Lloyd, on February 2, 2003.
Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church or Central Minnesota Habitat For Humanity.

Westminster Presbyterian Church was the setting on April 29 for the marriage of Miss Ellen Marie House to 2nd Lt. Jerry K. Cooper. The Rev. P. Arthur Brindisi performed the double ring ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell House, 210 1/2 Steel St. Herkimer. She was given in marriage by her uncle, Mr. Louie Werner. Her husband is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth K. Cooper, 8 Sherman Lane, New Hartford.
Miss Marian Ingersoll and Kenneth K. Cooper, the bridegroom's father, were the atending couple.
The newlyweds will make their home at 4065 Americana Drive, Annandale, Va., where the bridegroom is stationed with the Army.

Eloise Utley Cooper, 74, of 407 Division St. died Monday in Playas, Mexico. An Oneida native, Mrs. Cooper had lived in the Fulton area since 1955. She formerly was employed with McDonald's Dress Shop, Montgomery Ward Co., Fay's Drugs and A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital. She also was an inspector for the Fulton Board of Elections. Mrs. Cooper was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church , the Fulton Garden Club, AYH Hosteling International, the auxiliary of Fulton Lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose, the Volney Senior Citizens and Retired Seniors Volunteer Program. She was a former member of Elizabeth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a life member of the auxiliaries of Post 569 VFW, and the Order of Cooties. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Utley of Fulton and Kenneth Utley of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, Russell Freeman of New Hartford; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; an aunt; a niece; and two nephews. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Young & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Mount Adnah Cemetery.

Harold Arthur Utley, 407 Division St., Fulton, a former Rome resident, died Sunday at the Lee Memorial Hospital, Fulton, after a short illness. He was born in Fernandino, Florida, and was a graduate of Clarkson College, Potsdam. A resident of Fulton for 15 years, he was employed as a chemical engineer at the Nestle Co. Mr. Utley was a member of All Saint's Episcopal Church, Fulton, and the American Chemical Society. Surviving besides his wife, the former Eloise Freeman, are two sons, Ronald Utley, stationed with the Navy at Davisville, RI, Kenneth Utley, Fulton, and a sister, Kit Wood, Tampa, Florida. Interment will be in Mt. Adnah Cemetery, Fulton.
