 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
Published in Idaho Press Tribune on July 25, 2016
Leland Herbert Van Slyke, 85 years old, of Caldwell, Idaho passed away at home Saturday, July 23 after a short illness. Leland was born January 25, 1931 in Caldwell, and was quite fond of calling himself a “Caldwell native.” He was the oldest of three sons born to Herbert and Ruth Van Slyke.
Leland attended grade school in Caldwell, often telling stories of keeping mice in his coat pockets to warm his hands while walking to school, and of a kind teacher who helped him draft an appropriate Christmas thank you letter to his grandmother. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1949, and over the years enjoyed attending the many high school reunions. He attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, OR for a short time, returning to Caldwell in 1950 to enlist in the U. S. Air Force. He completed his basic training in Texas, specialty training in radio ECM in Biloxi, MS, and his unit formation in Kansas. Leland was then stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and while flying on his 19th bombing mission over North Korea, his plane was shot down on December 30, 1952. He often commented he was one of the lucky ones - one of only four who survived to return to the U. S. He was wounded on this mission, was captured by the North Korean soldiers, and taken to a POW camp. He was repatriated in August 1953 by signature of President Eisenhower – forever one of his favorites – and returned stateside. Leland remained in contact with his military acquaintances over the years. He proudly wore his Korean War baseball cap, and was honored when the state of Idaho issued his car license plate: “POW 53.” Leland was regularly surprised when strangers would notice his hat and license plate and tell him, “Thank you for your service.”
Leland met Lois Elaine Judy in Caldwell once he made it home and they married in Winnemucca, NV in 1955. Together they raised four children. Leland worked for 31 years at Crookham Seed Company in various positions, eventually being promoted to comptroller, a position he fulfilled until retirement.
Leland was a member of Treasure Valley Christian Church, a past president of the Kiwanis Club, a lifetime member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and O.E.S. He served six years on the Salvation Army Board, six years on the irrigation district board, and six years on the Grange credit union board.
Leland is survived by his wife, Lois, four children, Debra Van Slyke of Spokane WA, Steven and Elizabeth Luecker Van Slyke of Redmond WA, Judy Van Slyke of Portland OR, and Tracy Van Slyke Thompson of Evanston, WY, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one brother, Milton Van Slyke of Annandale VA, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ruth Van Slyke and his youngest brother, Delbert Van Slyke.
A memorial service will be held at Dakan Funeral Chapel on Friday, August 5, at 11:00 a.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Museum of Flight, 9404 E. Marginal Way South, Seattle, WA 98108-4097, or a charity of your choice.

 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
Delbert Eugene Van Slyke, 77, of Olympia, WA passed away on March 2, 2016 due to complications from diabetes. Born in Caldwell, Idaho to Herbert and Ruth (Summers) Van Slyke on November 12, 1938, Del attended school in Idaho and became a member of the Idaho Army National Guard in 1957. He was musically talented mastering a number of instruments, which led to playing the sousaphone in the 25th Army Band. After transferring to Olympia, Del began his new post as cook, which became another passion of his and ultimately led to a career in the food service industry.
Del met the love of his life while working at Budget Finance and on April 25, 1964, they were married at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Olympia, WA. In 1965, applying Del's culinary experience from the military and partnering with his wife's parents, Ray and Judie DeBoer, they opened Smitty's Pancake House in Aberdeen, WA. Del's passion for being a restaurateur quickly grew as he gained experience in catering and food brokering, eventually leading to the 1980 grand opening of his dream restaurant, VanDees Dutch Treat Inn, located in Olympia WA.
After operating in the restaurant business for several years, Del's interests expanded to travel, and in 1982, he successfully led a group to the Netherlands for a fantastic trip combining food and history. Another way Del satiated his travel bug was through motor boating. He led family and friends on numerous trips, exploring new spots, and enjoying fishing and crabbing throughout the Puget Sound. In Del's classic spirit of entrepreneurship, he was one of the first people to innovate boat sharing in order to enjoy his hobby.
As a member of The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd, Del's tremendous love of music was a perfect fit for the church choir where he led with a strong baritone voice that was always on key. Although diabetes eventually took his eyesight, it never stopped Del from humming and singing along in the church pew both at Good Shepherd and in recent years, as a member of Gloria Dei. His love of music continued as he attended many concerts and listened to a vast music collection at home.
Del is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, two grandsons and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
  H. Wendell Weaver 1940 - 2012 Wendell passed away on January 5, 2012 from complications of lung cancer.
   H. Wendell Weaver was born April 20, 1940, in Nampa, Idaho. His family, Harry and Elizabeth VanSlyke Weaver, and sisters, Carol and Karen, lived on Sunny Slope at the time. When Wendell (Sonny) was two, the family moved to Paynter Avenue in Caldwell. An adventurous little boy, Sonny often disappeared to a neighbor's home to look at clocks or rode his tricycle to exotic places.
At the age of three, he traveled through downtown Caldwell, across Indian Creek, past other hazards and several miles to his Uncle Herbert's home high on Canyon Hill. Aunt Ruth took the very tired, sweaty, sunburned little boy into the house and called his frantic parents to see if they were on their way as well. His mom didn't know whether to spank him or hug him. The hug won. Two other sisters, Judy and Connie, joined the family before leaving Caldwell. Judy passed away in 1943.
From 1946 to 1954, Wendell and his family lived in Baker, Oregon, where he completed the eighth grade. He was active in Boy Scouts, church activities, and had several paper routes. Still an adventuresome boy, Wendell played baseball in the neighbor's yard (breaking a window) and skated on frozen garden rinks in winter.
In 1954, the family moved to Boise and Wendell was excited to be in a big town. He attended North Junior High and Boise High where he donned the feathered headdress and uniform of the Boise Braves' yell leader. He worked at Consumer Grocery prior to graduation in 1958. Many of the friends he met remained good buddies for the rest of his life.
Wendell graduated from Boise Junior College in 1960, married, had a daughter Wendy Sue and son Gregory (deceased, 1962) were born. Wendell graduated from University of Washington with a degree in Communications and returned to Boise to work for KGEM radio and various insurance agencies. Wendell devoted himself to single parenting Wendy.
In 1969, Wendell married Shirley Ann Kinney, who had three girls, Julie, Kim, and Tana. Wendell quickly won their hearts and they his. The blended family welcomed Timothy Jon in 1974. Wendell and Shirley lived in Spokane for several years before returning to Boise.
Wendell worked for Wood Window Sales and built, remodeled, and inspected houses before joining AAA of Idaho. After retiring from AAA Idaho, Wendell and Shirley opened Shabby Attic and enjoyed working together to recycle furniture. Wendell was our Rock.
Wendell was predeceased by his grandparents, aunts and uncles, parents (Harry in 1967 and Elizabeth in 2007), son Gregory Wendell, sisters Judy in 1943 and Karen (Jim) Smith in 2001, as well as Shirley's parents Vern and Evonne Baldwin, sister-in-law Jean Simpson and brother-in-law Don Baldwin.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley, Wendy (Kevin) Folsom, Tim (Laura), Julie (Jerry) Dye, Kim (Lee) Rice, and Tana (Doug) Wardle. Survivors also include his sisters, Carol (Don) Thompson and Connie Weaver, brothers-in-law, Jim Smith, Garth (Kathy) and Wayne (Joanne) Baldwin, soon-to-be 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 10, at 11 a.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., Boise, ID.
The family suggests contributions to the Elizabeth M. Weaver/ADK Scholarship Fund #ERO53, Boise State University, 2225 University Drive, Boise, ID 83706.
