 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
Lillian Jean (Smith) Buck, 97, died Sunday evening at Altru hospital in Grand Forks.
She was born to John and Clara (Haugland) Smith on July 31, 1916 in Grand Forks.
When Lillian was 2 years old her mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic. She was raised by her Grandma Haugland, spending summers on the Smith farm in Walle Township with her grandma, dad, and uncles.
Lillian graduated from Grand Forks Central high school in 1934, where she met Doris Buck. Doris introduced Lillian to her brother, Ted, and he became Lillian's future husband.
They married July 27, 1937 and Lillian moved to Manvel, North Dakota where they farmed and raised their family. Lillian is survived by her children Maynard (Libby), Manvel, Beverly (Duane Obright), Minneapolis, Dennis (Carol), Grand Forks, Brian (Wanda), St. Cloud. Lillian is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Theodore, children Ted Jr., Nancy, and sister Donna Johnson. She is survived by other siblings in the western United States.
As they farmed Lillian belonged to the Congregational church, taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent. Later she belonged to Trinity Lutheran where she was also active in Sunday school and ladies aid. She was a charter member of the LFI (Levant, Ferry, Turtle River) homemakers club.
Lillian always wanted to be a nurse, but could not afford tuition during the 30's. When her husband Ted died in 1973 she took a nurse's aide course and went to work for United Hospital in Grand Forks. She thoroughly enjoyed this work.
Lillian was an active volunteer in ARC and received awards for her volunteerlsm at the Valley Memorial Home and on its board.
In 2005 she moved to Parkwood in Grand Forks ending 68 years "on the farm".
The family would like to thank Parkwood for her years there. She enjoyed greeting newcomers and the many friendships formed. We would also like to thank Altru Hospital for assisting in a peaceful passing.
