MOHAWK-Rodena F. "Dee" Sauer, age 67 of Church Street, Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, March 18, 2011 in Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare after a long illness. She had the love and comfort of her family by her side at the time of her passing.
She was born in Mohawk on June 15, 1943 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Spencer and Dallas (Petrie) Sauer and graduated with the Mohawk High School “Class of 1961” and was a lifelong Mohawk resident. Rodena was employed with the Polish Community Home in Herkimer for 17 years and was very active with coordinating events there, especially those involving children. She was of the Methodist Faith.
For several years, Rodena served on the board of directors with the Herkimer Fairground Association and was very active with the Herkimer County Food Coalition. She enjoyed traveling with her best friend, Fran, playing bingo and most importantly spending time with her cherished family, especially her grandchildren. Rodena will be sorely missed by all the lives that she touched.
Survivors include her devoted family; four children: Kimberly Kolar and husband Keith of Mohawk, Mark Hunt and wife Kim of North Dakota, Paul Hunt of Mohawk, and Renee Bayer and husband Randy of Ilion; a sister: Jean Barney of Whitesboro; a sister in law: Karen Sauer of Mohawk; her cherished grandchildren: Kelly, Ashley, Jimmy, Raisa, Jonathan and Shaun; three adored great grandchildren: Deanna, Dana and Alesha; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dean and John Sauer.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. Rodena’s funeral will commence at 10 am on Wednesday, March 23rd from the chapel of the funeral home with Deacon Joseph DeLorenzo officiating. She will be laid to rest, later in the spring, in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer.
Please omit floral offerings. Kindly consider memorial offerings to the Herkimer County Humane Society or to the Herkimer County Food Coalition; envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home. MOHAWK—In a church decorated with summer flowers. Miss Rodena Frances Sauer and Leslie Edward Hunt were married in a single ring ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Harry Kemp, pastor, in Paines Hollw Methodist Church.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Sauer, Mohawk RD 1, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hunt. Sr., Mohawk RD 1.
Traditional wedding music was played by Miss Mildred Mehring, pianist.
The bride, escorted by her father, chose a gown of ivory brocade satin with a scoop neckline, long sleeves ending in bridal points, and a floor-length bouffant skirt. Her finger-tip veil of illusion was edged with Chantilly lace and fell from a crown of pearls and iridescent sequins. She carried a bouqet of white carnations and mums with white satin streamers.
Miss Jean Sauers, sister of the bride, maid of honor, wore a yellow silk organza ballerina- length dress and carrid a colonial bouquet of yellow mums.
Miss Jean Hunt, sister bridegroom, bridesmaids, were attired in pale green ballerina-length gowns of taffeta and nylon. They also carried colonial bouquets of yellow mums.
Metro Soposki. Van Hornesville, was the best man, and John Sauer, brother, of the bride, and William Hunt, Jr., brother of the bridegroom, were the ushers.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held on the lawn of the bride’s parents' home.
The new matron graduated last week from the Mohawk Central School. The bridegroom attended Mohawk schools and is affiliated with the Palatine Dye Co., St. Johnsville.
Pre-nuptials were given by Mrs. Helen Smith and Mrs. Betty Smith.
Out-of-town guests were from Cleveland, Ohio., Buffalo, and Valley towns.

Gerald V. Mitchell passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Cooperstown Centers.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Nancy.
Jerry is survived by his son, Duane L. Mitchell and grandson Aaron; his daughter, Colleen R. Peplinski, son-in-law Jason and granddaughter Sadie; along with his stepchildren Rick Maine, Sherry White and Victor Maine. Jerry is also survived by sisters Joan Hudson and Phyllis Failing in addition to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four of his siblings: brothers Myron “Bud”, Jay Allan, and Theodore Mitchell as well as his sister Anita Smith.
“Vic” as known by some was born in Marshville, NY on March 3, 1942.
He was a dedicated father and devoted much of his time to his children and grandchildren.
Jerry had a passion for life. He was an avid fan of college basketball- go ‘cuse! He also enjoyed NASCAR and local summer truck pulls.
Jerry was a man of great character, a man of integrity and he will be missed dearly.
Graveside services will be held in Van Hornesville Cemetery, Van Hornesville, NY.

CEDARVILLE - The funeral for Hollis R. Petrie, 57, of Wall Street, will be at 2 Monday from the Wilcox Funeral Home, West Winfield, with the Rev. Donald S. Bell, pastor of the People's Undenominationl Church officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Loren House Jr.. Burial will be in Cedarville Cemetery.
Mr. Petrie died yesterday from injuries suffered in an excavation acciden in Dolgeville.
He was born in Town of German Flatts and attended schools at Paines Hollow and Mohawk. He married Elva Doremus in 1936 in Cedarville. Mr. Petrie was a carpenter for Harry Parry Co., Utica contractors, for the past four years. Warlier he was employed by Gus Mille, a contractor, Utica.
He was a member and deacon of the People's Undenominational Church, a member of the Joseph Berberic Hose Co., the Herkimer Local of the Carpenter's Union, and of Winfield Lodge, F. & A. M.
Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Harold Talbot, Whitesboro, a son Kevin Petrie, Cedarville, and a sister, Mrs. Spencer Sauer, Mohawk.

Elva D. Petrie, 99, a life long resident of Cedarville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 27, 2011. She was born on November 30, 1911, in Cedarville, a daughter of the late Irving and Alice (House) Doremus. She married Hollis R. Petrie on May 21, 1936, in Cedarville. Mr. Petrie passed away in 1967.
She was employed for many years with Mt. Markham Schools at Mt. Markham High School in the Cafeteria. Mrs. Petrie was a member of the Cedarville Peoples Undenominational Church, where she served as Treasurer for 40 years. She was a 55 year member of Eastern Star in West Winfield. In addition, she was a member of the Ladies Aide Society, Home Bureau and the Cedarville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She loved the times when she was able to go camping with her husband and family in the many parks around New York State.
She is survived by her daughter, Careen P. Talbot and her husband, Harold, of Chittenango, and five grandchildren, Kelly, Kristen, Timothy, Christopher and Brett. She also leaves eight great-grandchildren; also a sister, Bernice Springer; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Kevin H. Petrie, and a granddaughter, Tracey Kennedy. Two sisters and a brother also predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 6, at 2:00 PM at the Peoples Undenominational Church in Cedarville, where an Eastern Star Service will be offered at the beginning of the funeral service. Interment will be in Cedarville Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, August 5, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 365 West Main St., West Winfield.

West Wlnfleld—The home of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Doremus of Wall Street, West Winfield, was the scene of a wedding, Saturday, when their daughter, Elva Alice, became the bride of Hollis R. Petrie, son of John M. Petrie, Schemaker Hill, Mohawk.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. M. Qulncy of the First Baptist Church. West Winfield.
Before the ceremony James Rose sang "I Love You Truly" and Miss Grace Doremus. sister of the bride, played the wedding march from Lohengrin. Miss Doremus, who was given in marriage by her father, was gowned in white lace and veil, and carried a~bouquet or calla lillies.
The bride was attended by her sisters, Miss Bernice Doremus, as maid of honor, and Miss Cora Doremua as bridesmaid. The maid of honor wore pink taffeta with silver accessories, and carried pink roses, and the bridesmaid wore a white organza whit white accessories and carried white roses. The train carrier wass Miss Helen Joan Davis who wore yellow organdie, and the ring bearer was Loren House Jr.
Gordon Petrie, brother of the bridegroom, was best man, and Eugene Doremus, brother of the bride, was the bridegroom's attendant.
Miss Doremus attended the West Winfield Hight School and was gradusted from Ilion Business School, She has been employed in the Sterling Mills, Ilion.
Mr. Petrie attended Mohawk High School, and is a carpenter by trade, employed by his father.
The couple left by auto for Niagara Falls. They will return in about two weeks and take up their residence in Wall Street.

WEST WINFIELD - Gerald C. Gay, 51, of e. Main Street, an inspector at the Remington Arms Company, Ilion, died Sunday in Immogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
He was born in Cedarville. He attended schools in West Winfield.
In 1946 he married Lillian DeMars. Mrs. Gay died in 1973.
He attended th eUnited Methodist Church of West Winfield and was a member of th eDisabled American Veterans, Richfield Springs.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Juliadean) Lafyer of West Winfield.

MOHAWK - Russell C. VanValkenburg, 68, of Pompano Beach, Fla., a retired owner and operator of the Valley Tavern, died Tuesday, February 26, 1985 in Fla.
He was born on May 10, 1916 in Richfield Springs, the son of Clyde and Evana Hunt VanValkenburg. He was a Veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Navy. On February 6, 1935, be was married to Clarice (Toady) Morgan in Herkimer. Mr. VanValkenburg was a member of the Mohawk Volunteer Fire Dept and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Toady; two daughters, Gerald (Shirley) Smith of Whitesboro, Mrs. Stanley (Jeanne) Watroba of Pompano Beach; his son and daughter-in-law, Don (Nina) VanValkenburg of Ilion; his sister, Mrs. Richard (Eleanor) Young of Canajoharie; his brother and sister-in-law, Irving (Flash) and Eva VanValkenburg of Oneida Lake; his aunt, Myrtle Putch; 12 grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m Saturday at the Applegate Funeral Home, Ilion. Calling hours are Thursday 7-9 and Friday 2-4 and 7-9. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc. The Mohawk
American Legion service will be held 7 p.m. Friday at the Funeral Home.

CANASTOTA >> Irving L. "Flash" Van Valkenburg, 97, of Canastota, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016 at The Grand at Rome.
Born and raised in Richfield Springs, N.Y., Irving was a 1937 graduate of Richfield Springs High School in Mohawk Valley, where he met his late wife, Eva. He was the captain of his basketball, baseball and football teams and was the son of the late Evana Hunt and Clyde Van Valkenburg. Irving resided in Canastota on Oneida Lake for 50 years and maintained a winter residence in Shallotte, N.C., for more than 30 years.
Irving was a World War II veteran of the Naval Air Force where he served as a navigator in a PBY in the European Theatre. He owned and operated the Mohawk Valley Tavern with his wife in the 1950s. Irving retired in 1980 after more than 20 years as a manager with the General Electric Plants in Asheboro, N.C. and Syracuse. He was a 32nd Degree F&AM of the Grand Lodge in Utica and of the Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 for over 70 years, a member of the American Legion Post No. 616 in Richfield Springs and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Shallotte, N.C.
Irving enjoyed hunting and fishing especially around Oneida Lake. He was an avid golfer, playing eight days a week while he was in North Carolina, and was a member of Castlewood Golf Club.
Irving was predeceased by his wife, Eva (Harter) Van Valkenburg, in September, their son, Dave Van Valkenburg, in 2007 and by his siblings, Russell and Eleanore.
He is survived by a son, Thomas (Anne) Van Valkenburg and a daughter-in-law, Julie Van Valkenburg, both of Canastota; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Kelly, TJ, Jennifer, Mike, Jeff, and Chad; 10 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Brook, Brandon, Jeff, Nolan, Michael, Isabella, Jason, Leslie, and Kurt; and a great great-granddaughter, Katilina.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to his family with the intent of purchasing a memorial tree and bench for the Richfield Springs community in memory of Irving and Eva, c/o Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale, N.Y. 13211.

The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Dominick Putch, 126 South Fifth Ave. The bridegroom is the son of Mr and Mrs. Raymond F. Watson. 125 Elm St.
Maid of honor was Miss Barbara Hall. Bridesmaids were Miss Judy Putch, sister of the bride, Peggy Putch. cousin of the bride, Susan Garnsey and Pamela Urtz Flower girl was Patti Putch, sister of the bride.
Kevin Heneka was best man Ushering were Donald Putch, brother of the bride, Gary Norman. John Bergin. and Paul Werthman. John Putch. cousin of the bride was ringbearer.
Given in marriage by her father the bride chose a floor-length gown of organza and Venice lace with high neckline with a lace bodice. The long bishop sleeves ended in a tight wrist and flared cuffs. The A-line skirt had lace decorating the hemline. Her chapel-length train also was edged with lace. She wore a headpiece of Venice lace with sequins and pearls. Her tierea illusion veil was elbow length. She carried a cascade bouquet of sweetheart roses, daisies, carnations and baby’s breath.
The maid of honor and flower girl wore identical gowns of lime green, in silk organza with A-line skirts. The dresses had lace bib-fronts and full chiffon sleeves. They wore matching picture hats with a satin ribbon The maid of honor carried a nosegay of carnations, sweetheart roses, daisies and baby’s breath. The flower girl carried a basket of similar flowers and dropped rose petals down the aisle The bridemaids were dressed like the other attendants but in yellow.
Following a reception from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Ilion Moose Lodge, the couple left for a trip to Montreal, Canada upon their return thev will reside at 64 Concord
St.
The bride is a 1972 graduate of Ilion High School and a graduate of Utica School of Beauty Culture She is employed by Barling Shoes, Herkimer.
The bridegroom is also a 1972 graduate of Ilion High School. He attended Community College of the Finger Lakes and Herkimer County Community College He is employed by Norman Roofing and Siding.
Showers were given by Mrs. Harold Stone and Mrs. Frank Sterling and the bridal attendants. A rehearsal party was given by the parents of the bridegroom at their home
