 - Obituary
  Ellen H. Mahoney 1/20/1934 - 1/15/2009
Ellen H. Mahoney of Lincoln, Calif., passed away peacfully in her sleep on January 15, 2009. Ellen was born in Utica, NY on January 20, 1934, and was the daughter of John and Florence Herkel. She is survived by husband Frank Mahoney, and daughters Laurie Mahoney, of Oroville, CA, and Kim Mahoney, of Seattle, WA. She was predeceased by her parents, and a son, Paul Mahoney.
Ellen received a business degree from Becker Junior College in Worcester, MA, and later went to work in marketing for General Electric in Syracuse, NY, where she met her future husband Frank Mahoney. After marrying, she took time off from work to raise a family, and later moved to Maryland, and then the west coast, where the family lived in California. When the children got older, Ellen went back to school and took some legal classes from De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif., and eventually went to work as a legal secretary in a small law firm in Sunnyvale, Calif., where she was employed for ten years. Her boss was Pat Vorreiter, who would become the Mayor of Sunnyvale. Ellen was a "people person" and highly organized, so the job was a perfect fit for her new skills and outgoing personality. The family lived for many years in Saratoga and Sunnyvale, Calif., where Ellen and husband Frank became avid golfers. Ellen was also an accomplished pianist, and a long-time member of the award-winning barbershop groups the Mission Valley Chorus, and the Bay Area Showcase. After retirement, Ellen and husband Frank moved to Scottsdale, AZ, and later Lincoln, Calif., where she lived for the past four years. Ellen was a friendly, down-to-earth woman with a big heart and a sunny smile that could really light up a room. She loved children and animals, especially birds, and had a good sense of humor that immediately put everyone at ease. Ellen was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend, and we will all miss her dearly.
