Daughter of George Andrew and Mary Celestia 'Lettie' Walker Whigham.
Maxine grew up in Blanchard, IA. Essie didn't have the luxury of modern day transportation, she had a pony called 'Don' that carried her, her cousin, and a friend to and from school each day. Three riding the pony was at the same time very efficient, but not without mishap. If, 'Don' decided he needed to stop and eat grass, they all came tumbling down.
As Maxine progressed in age do did her mode of transportation. Instead of 'Don' the pony, her dad bought her a horse called 'Snip'. Essie rode 'Snip' five miles back and forth to high school each day it was school was in session. Maxine would ride into the stall, un-tack 'Snip', feed him, change her clothes and head to classes. Sometimes she was able to ride to the neighbors and un-tack 'Snip', feed him, and catch the bus the rest of the way. This was great on the cold winter days. She graduated from Amity High School in College Springs, IA in 1936.
Maxine's parents moved to Florida after she graduate and she would go visit them for extend periods of time.
Byron Burl Gray her friend for life proposed to her and they were married in Nebraska City, NE on 21 Sep 1941. The newlyweds settled in Omaha, NE where Byron was a welder.
They soon moved back to the Whigham farm for a time then to a farm in Eastern Iowa.
When Maxine was six months pregnant with her first child them moved to Colorado where Byron worked as a welder. Larry their first child was born (17 Aug 1942) and about six moths later the family moved to California were Byron worked at the shipyards for about a year. They again returned to the Whigham farm, where LeRoy (1 Sep 1944) and Dennis (16 Aug 1947) were added to the family.
Her husband Byron as a child fell off a spade while digging and landed on the protruding point of the blade, which cause him ongoing back pain. Because of the back pain he could not continue working the farm even though he never lost his love of the land and the decided to move back to Colorado. The summer of 1949, they moved to a farm in Windsor and from there to a farm in Wiggins in the summer of 1950. Unfortunately, Byron was forced to find other employment and found a job as a welder in Denver, CO. They again moved in the summer of 1952 to Hazel Court and then to Windemere Street in the summer of 1953 where Steve was born (4 Oct 1953).They both loved the farm and once again, moved to a farm in Ft. Morgan CO in the spring/summer of 1954, in the fall of 1955 they moved back to Denver, CO. Byron worked again as a welder and a truck driver. Byron passed away on his truck on 13 Jan 1956.
Maxine niece and friend, Joan Stanley and her children moved in with Maxine and Maxine stayed at home with all the children.
Maxine married Stanley Dennis Cochran on 7 Jul 1957 and had one child Roger Clark Cochran (18 Jul 1960. Stan couldn't stay in one place too long and eventual left on his own.
Maxine sold her home and moved again and the women and their children moved into another house, where they stayed together for a few years until Joan bought a place of her own and moved out.
Maxine started working outside the home first at a printing shop then at Woolworth's in downtown Denver, she rode the bus every day to and from work. Around January 1977 sold her house and she and her youngest son Roger moved into an apartment, then into the house with her cousin Joan.
Roger married Joan and bought his own home and Maxine moved in with them in Aurora, CO until they moved to Castle Rock, CO in 1993, where Maxine stayed for a few more years until she decided to move into a senior community in town in 2007.
