Edward Leroy Wachtman
Mars Hill – Edward Leroy Wachtman, 88, of Mars Hill, formerly of Cullowhee and Cary, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and friend and will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know him.
Born in Illion, N.Y. on May 23, 1919, he was the son of the late Anna Elizabeth Starring and Roy W. Wachtman. He was happily married for 55 years to the late Ruth McNeil Wachtman, who died in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert W. Wachtman.
After graduation from Union Endicott High School in1937, he began a highly successful career with IBM in Endicott, New York.
His career at IBM was deferred when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 to serve his country as an officer during World War II. Mr. Wachtman served with the 508th Army Corps of Engineers from 1941 to 1945 and was deployed to the European Theater in 1944. Returning home in 1945, he resumed his career with IBM, retiring as a senior staff engineer in 1983 after 46 years with the company. He continued to serve his country as an active member of the Army Reserves until 1958, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Major.
During his 24 years of retirement he enjoyed a multitude of activities, including remodeling and landscaping his home in the mountains of North Carolina with his wife, Ruth, volunteering with Hospice, and spending five years with friends and family in Vancouver, B.C.
He is survived by sons, Edward L. Wachtman Jr. and wife, Sheree Johnson, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Thomas Tommy Wachtman and wife, Kerry, of Holly Springs; daughters, Mary W. Baldwin and husband, Billy, of Cullowhee, and Lisa Wachtman of Mars Hill. In addition, he is survived by five grandchildren, Emily and Mollie of Vancouver, B.C., Sara of Holly Springs, John and Jeremy of Cullowhee.
A family memorial service will be held and his cremated remains will be spread amongst the wildflowers when they bloom in spring on their mountain property in Cullowhee.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The Salvation Army or your local Hospice in Mr. Wachtman ' s memory.

Mary Elizabeth Gardner, 84 of New Hartford, passed away on Monday March 11, 2019 at home, with her loving family by her side.
Mary was born on August 31, 1934 in Florence, NY. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Culver) Shepard. She was a graduate of Ilion Schools. Following high school she served in the United States Air Force upon completing her service she worked as an inspector for GE in Utica for over 38 years. She was married to Harlow Gardner, he passed away several years ago. Mary was a member of the New Hartford American Legion.
Mary is survived by her daughter Rebecca Babilon, with whom she resided; two sons Richard Gutheinz of NC and Wyatt and his wife Kimberly Gutheinz of New Hartford; a brother Larry and his wife Barb Shepard of Mohawk as well as several grand and great grandchildren. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is pre deceased by two sisters Helen Rose and Ruth Getman and a brother Harold Shepard.
A very special friend Tammy Matys who gave Mary so much love and devotion, over the years. Also special friends Martha Smith and Ruth Madison.
Funeral services for Mary will be held on Saturday March 16, 2016 at 3pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. Bishop Dan Harzog will officiate. Interment will be in the spring at Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion, with military honors. Friends may call on Saturday from 1pm until the time of the service.

The marriage of Miss Donna Rose, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Rose, Dolgeville, and Harvey Goodell, son of Mrs. Gertrude Goodell, 32 Mechanic St., St. Johnsvilie, took place Oct. 12, in the Christian Assembly Church, Dolgeville. The Rev. Daniel Parisi, pastor, performed the double ring ceremony. Mrs. Joseph Pileggi played traditional wedding music and sang.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a floor length gown of white embossed taffeta with coat to match. Her fingertip veil was fastened to a pearl headpiece and she carried a colonial bouquet of white roses and carnations.
Mrs. Ruth Williams, Dolgeville, sister of the bridegroom, was matron of honor. Miss Janice Rose, Dolgeville, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, and. Miss Marguerite Rose, also of Dolgeville, another sister of the bride, was flower girl.
Dale Williams, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, was best man, John Goodell, St. Johnsville, brother of the bridegroom, was usher, and Kevin Williams was ringbearer. The matron of honor wore a deep yellow chiffon gown and matching headpiece and carried red roses with red satin streamers. The bridesmaid's gown was of pale chiffon and lace and she also carried red roses with red streamers. The flower girl wore blue chiffon and carried a basket of red roses with blue streamers.
A reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Williams, Dolgeville, after which the couple left on a wedding trip to the southern part of the state. They will reside at Fort Lee, Va., where the bridegroom is stationed with the armed forces.
Mrs. Goodell attended Little Falls High School and has been employed by the Daniel Green Co. in Dolgeville.
Mr. Goodell also attended Dolgeville Central School and is serving in the Army.

William "Bill" H. Frederick, 85, of North Columbia Rd., Ilion, died Sunday, August 6, 2006, at Folts Home, Herkimer.
He was born on June 4, 1921 in a farmhouse in Ephratah, NY, the eleventh of 13 children, the son of Norman James and Christine (Grose) Frederick. Bill attended schools in Keck Center and Johnstown, NY. In 1936, he had to quit school in the tenth grade to help his father on their farm. He attained his GED in 1965. Bill served in World War II as a gunner on ships charged with delivering troops and supplies throughout Europe. On June 19, 1943 while delivering supplies to Bandur, Iran, his ship, the SS Henry Knox was torpedoed and sunk in the Indian Ocean. They survived eight days and a fierce hurricane in a lifeboat before making landfall in the Maldive Island group. Within weeks he was reassigned to another ship and back in his gunner position. Before the war was over he served on six different vessels.
On November 23, 1946, he was married to Dorothy Virginia Pett at the North Columbia Church. They would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary this year. Bill worked at the Union Fork & Hoe Co., American Hardwall Plaster Co. and the Masonic Home. Mr. Frederick joined the Mohawk Masonic Lodge on March 9, 1964 and held every office, including Master Mohawk Lodge #276, Herkimer District Deputy Grand Master in 1972, 1980 and 1981 and as trustee from 1973 through 1976 and again in 1982 and as Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Herkimer Masonic District. Other Masonic affiliations include memberships in the Mohawk Valley Consistory, Scottish Rite Club (president 1976 and 1981), member of Ziyara Temple, patron of the Mohawk Chapter OES and a member of the Oriental Court, Order of Amaranth. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints. Bill was also a former director of the Herkimer County Fair Board, assistant scout master of Troup 37 of North Columbia and secretary of the Masonic Co-Ed Bowling League. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, fisherman, bowler and card player.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Patty Frederick of Charlotte, NC, Norman and Rebecca Frederick of Frankfort; his daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Daniel Harakis of Herkimer; six grandchildren, Courtney, Colby, Larry and Kara Frederick, Dennis Morris and Teddy Frederick; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Irvin and all his brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints, 317 Gros Blvd., E. Herkimer, NY. Interment will follow at North Columbia Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, August 9, 2006, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, and on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Members of the Mohawk Valley Masonic Lodge #276 will conduct their ritualistic services at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The court granted an annulment of the marriage of Frank Aiello, Utica, to Betty Coonradt Aiello. Aiello, the plaintiff, took the stand during the morning and testified that he had married his wife on April 14, 1945, more than a year alter a child which she said was his, had been born. He told the court that she later admitted that she was in doubt that Aiello was he child's father.

Scott F. Cristman, Ilion, was best man. He is the bridegroom's brother. Niles Oliver, Rochester, and Richard J. Aulerich, Lansing, Mich., the bridegroom's brother-in-law ushered.
Following a wedding trip the couple will make their home in Rochester.
The bride was graduated from the State University College at Genseo. She will be on the faculty of the Spencerport School System in the fall. Mr. Cristman was graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Photography. ILION — Ronald M. Ward, 57, of Watkins Glen, a former Ilion resident, died suddenly Wednesday at his home.
A graduate of Ilion High School and Colgate University. Mr. Ward retired earlier this year after more than 20 years of teaching and guidance counseling in Rome and Watkins Glen high schools.
Mr Ward was a member of the United Methodist Church, past lay reader, Sunday School superintendent and administrative board chairman, a member of Jefferson Lodge F&AM, past president of the Watkins-Montour Rotary Club and secretary of the Schuyler County Medical Scholarship Committee.
He was an Army veteran.
Besides his widow, the former Joan Sprague, of Ilion, he leaves a son, Norman. Montour Falls; a daughter, Marcia, Watkins Glen; and a sister, Mrs. William (Ruth) Epke, Wayland.
The funeral will be at 2:30 tomorrow from the United Methodist Church, Watkins Glen. Burial arrangements are incomplete.

Joan S. Ward, age 99 years, 10 months and 19 days old, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2017. She was born in Ilion, NY on July 4, 1917, the daughter of Clarence and Jenny Sprague. She was predeceased by her parents; husband Ronald Ward in 1972, sister Edith Graves, and two brothers, Charles and Richard Sprague. Survivors include son Norman (Margaret) Ward, of Elmira, daughter Marcia Ward and husband Albert Kukol of Johnson City; 3 grandchildren, Christopher (Cara) Ward, Whitney Kukol, and Mitchell Kukol; great-grandson, Caz Ward; sister, Betty Lou Whittemore of Oneonta, NY; cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 4th St., Watkins Glen, on Thursday (March 25) from 4pm-6pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 10:00am; Rev. Mark Flandreau officiating; burial will be at Hector Presbyterian Cemetery followed by a reception. She raised her family in Watkins Glen and was an active member of the community. Joan was a longtime member of the Watkins Glen United Methodist Church, volunteer for the Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary and Watkins Glen Public Library. She was also a member of the Evening Belles-Home Dem., and enjoyed playing Bridge with friends.
