The funeral of the late Jacob A. Getman will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.- Obituary (Daily Leader, Gloversville, NY, Monday, January 6, 1896)
Saturday morning Nellis Getman, supervisor of the city of Johnstown, received intelligence of the death of his father, Jacob A. Getman, which occurred at his residence at Ephratah, very suddenly that morning. He arose at his usual hour feeling as well as usual and after partaking of breakfast, went out and did the chores, returning again and seating himself by the fire, and in five minutes dropped quietly into that sleep that knows no awakening, without seeming to evince any pain or to give any notice of his feeling unwell. It is supposed to have been a case of heart failure, as he had scarcely known what sickness was during his well spent life of nearly sixty-six years, never having been under the doctor's care. The greater part of his life was spent upon a farm, and some three or four years since he gave up agricultural pursuits and removed to the village of Ephratah to enjoy in leisure his well-earned possessions. He was well and favorably known throughout that entire section of country and enjoyed to a high degree the honor and respect of the community. Besides a wife, he leaves three sons, Nellis, residing in Johnstown, Raymond, residing at Rochester, Asa, living at home, and one daughter, Mary, also residing at home.

Clark- Saltsman of this village observed his 90th birthday yesterday , quietly. His friends throughout the village extended congratulations and the ladies of the Reformed church gave him a handsome birthday cake. Rev. R.A. Geddes and the consistory of St. John’s Reformed church presented Mr. Saltsman with an inscribed parchment memorial signed by the officers and members. The memorial set forth his many years of church service as well as important dates in his career. It is bound in leather and makes a lasting gift.
Clark Saltsman was born in Stone Arabia March 8, 1843 on the old Saltsman farm settled by his immigrant ancestors in the 18th century. His parents were Josiah P. Saltsman and his wife Mary Getman. His grandparents on the Saltsman side were Peter I. Saltsman and Katherine Saltsman.
He came to St. Johnsville May 9, 1868 and began his apprenticeship with his uncles, the Saltsman brothers, (W. H. and Alvin,) carriage and sleigh manufacturers. He received $5 a month for three years. Carriage makers were much in demand at that time and when masters of their craft, received good wages. His firs work was in the wood working department making wagon spokes. This plant was located on South Division street, most of which has been removed in recent years. Here he remained 27 years until the breaking up of the original firm.
When the old firm broke up due to the advanced age of the original founders Mr. Saltsman in company with Alvin Saltsman Jr., bought the business and carried on for a matter of ten years.
The encroachment of the trade wagon some of them prison-made which sold for half the price of the hand made Saltsman wagons brought the business to an end for they realized that it was too late to enter the lists against organizations built to carry on mass production.
Mr. Saltsman remembers on occasion in which the elder Saltsman Brothers let a fortune slip through their grasp. An inventor engaged them to build a dump wagon, the first of its kind, and Clark Saltsman was the actual builder of this innovation. The right to manufacture was offered to the Saltsman Brothers who passed it up in favor of the finer top buggy which was then the most attractive item in the carriage field. They built the fines in the land but the dump wagon which they declined to build was built later in Canistota and became a flourishing concern. The coming of railroad building was the occasion for employing dump wagons and in fact in one form or another they are still in demand after the carriages have long since passed to become museum pieces.
After the closing of the carriage works, Mr. Saltsman found employment in the wood working department of the Clark Machine Company making threshing machines. Here he remained for many years. He has witnessed the passing of both the wagon and threshing machine industries during the span of his life.
In 1877 he married Josephine Bright who died in 1915. Two children Harold and Mildred were born to them both of whom are now dead. His only surviving direct descendants are a granddaughter Mrs. Mildred Bell of Gloversville and a grandson Kenneth Duesler of Oneonta and a great-granddaughter Marilyn Duesler of Oneonta.
He has been a member of St. John’s Reformed church since he came here. He was chorister for 15 years and has filled the office of deacon and superintendent of the Sunday School. One political office that he recalls, that of collector, in which he made a record of collecting every dollar spread on the roll even if he had to pay the tax out of his own pocket for the sake of making his record 100 per cent perfect.
Mr. Saltsman is in fair health and active. His friends are wishing him many happy returns for his birthday and there seems no reason why he should not live to enjoy many more of them.- Obituary (Evening Recorder, Amsterdam, NY, December 30, 1939)
ST, JOHNSVILLE, Dec. 30. — Clark Saltsman, 91, for most of his life a resident of St. Johnsville and many years a manufacturer in that village, died early yesterday morning at the home of his grandniece, Mrs. Olive Morrison, 94 Third Avenue, GloVersvllle. He had resided with her for about two years.
Mr. Saltsman was born in Stone Arabia on March 8, 1848, on the farm settled in the 18th Century by his immigrant ancestors. He was a son of Joslah P. and Mary Getman Saltsman.
On May 9, 1868, Mr. Saltsman went to St. Johnsville to enter the employ of his uncles, W. H. Saltsman and Alvin Saltsman, Jr., who comprised the firm of Saltsman Bros., manufacturers of wagons and sleighs. He worked for them for 27 years, until the original firm was disbanded, when he and Alvin Saltsman, Jr., purchased the business and carried it on for ten years, until decreasing use of wagons and sleighs made it unprofitable.
In 1877, Mr. Saltsman was married to Josephine Wright [sic], who died in 1915. They had two children, both of whom predeceased their father.
Mr. Saltsman was a member of St John's Reformed Church of St. Johnsville and a member of the chior for 15 years. He also served at various times as a deacon of the church and superintendant of the Sunday School. He was a Republican and one held the office of town collector.
In reaching 91 years of age, Clark Saltsman realized an ambitions frends had heard him express - to attain an age greater than that at which his grandfather had died. His grandfather died at the age of 90 years, six months and three days.
When Mr. Saltsman left St. Johnsville he realized that because of his advanced age he could not hope to spend many more years on earth, and advised friends of his wishes for his obsequies. He even selected the type of casket he wished, and voiced his desires in other details.
In falling health all Autumn, Mr. Saltsman was confined to his bed only a short time. In accordance with his requests, the body was taken to the Smith funeral nome in St. Johnsville at which place the services will be held. Also in keeping with his plans, the Rev. Robert A. Geddes, pastor of St. John's Reformed Church will officiate, but the date and hour have not been set.
Only survivors are St. Johnsville cousins; a grandaughter, Miss Mildred Bell, Gloversville; and a grandson, Kenneth Duesler, Oneonta; also a great-grandaughter.
- Obituary (Amsterdam Evening Recorder, Tuesday, January 3, 1915)
St. Johnsvllle, Jan. 6. — Josephine Bright wife of Clark Saltsman, died at her home on West Main street at 7 p. m. Sunday. She was born in New York city, but was a resident of Utica, where she was married October 24 1877, to Mr. Saltsman, who for several years had a position in the Saltsman carriage works, where he is still interested, having for the last 18 years been one of the firm. Mrs. Saltsman's health had been failing for some years, and several visits to a hospital had only given temporary relief. The death of her only son, Harlow B. Saltsman, one of several distressing fatalities among the young men of St. Johnsville and vicinity about that period, in August, 1912, was a severe shock to Mrs. Saltsman, as well as to the rest of the family, and several severe cases of lllness in the family of her only daughter and only surviving child during her illness had added to the afflictions of the stricken family. Mrs. Saltsman had been for years a member of St. John's Reformed church of St. Johnsvllle and of several of its auxilary societies.
The immediate survivors are: Her husband, Clark Saltsman, of St. Johnsvllle, son-in-law and daughter. Winfield
S. and Edna (Saltsman) Duesler and their son and daughter, Kenneth and Mildred, of Oneonta, and three brothers, John Bright, of New Haven, William, of Skaneateles, and Benjamin, of Nantucket. For several months Mrs. Saltsman's condition had been regarded as critical. As a last resort she submitted to an operation of the right limb, December 10, 1914. The disease was too firmly seated to be overcomb and the operation proved futile. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.

St. Johnsvllle, Aug. 23.—Harlow W. Saltsman, only son of Clark and Josephine (Bright) Saltsman, died at 11:30 p. m. Wednesday, aged 20 years. Clark Saltsman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Saltsman of Palatine, and came to St. Johnsville when just entering manhood and entered the carriage works of Saltsman Bros., where he has remained until the present, having with A. After completing the High school course, he went last winter to Rochester, and began taking a course in engraving, in which he was making excellent progress. St. Johnsvllle. July, 10. — The funeral of Peter I. Saltsman, an esteemed citizen of Waterbury, Conn., who died July 1, was held in that city July 4, with prayer services conducted at the Ephratah, N. Y., cemetery, where the interment was made July 5. Mr. Saltsman, who was 48 years of age, was a native of Wagner's Hollow, in this vicinity.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Charles and Wilbur Saltsman, of Waterbury; two brothers, Clark Saltsman, of St. Johnsvllle, and Norman Saltsman, of Wagner's Hollow; also three grandchildren.- Peter J. Saltsman died on the date you indicate, but according to my father died in Waterbury, CT. (I do have him listed in the 1920 Census as a patient at the Connecticut State Hospital in Middletown, CT, so it is quite possible my father was incorrect.) In his obituary and some records he is listed with a middle initial "I" and my father's notes say there is confusion on which is correct. His birthdate is 27 Aug 1854 in some records, but his obituary lists 26 August 1856. In the 1880 census he is living with his parents and his age is listed as 25. (Charles M Saltsman III)
