Melvin C. Donahue
New Ulm - Melvin C. Donahue, 94, of New Ulm, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye after a long and heroic battle with old age.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and from 7:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Gertrude; daughters and sons-in-law, Myrna and Don Lage of New Ulm, Arlene Champion of Little Canada, Sheila and Jim Eickman of Chisago City, Sharon and Jeff Marvin of Rapid City, South Dakota, Noreen and Jim Miller of Burnsville, Pat Donahue of New Ulm and Kathleen and Joel Schwarz of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Parnell and Mary Donahue of Gallatin, Tennessee and Leonard ?Lenny? and Donna Donahue of New Ulm; 32 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; sisters and brother-in-law, Camilla Stillings of Park Rapids, Alda Johnson of Andover and Rosemary and Roy Peterson of Westbrook.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Clarence, Floyd, Jesse and Marion; two sisters, Alicia Peschges and Adalaide Nelson. Melvin Calistus Donahue was born on October 14, 1912 to John and Mary (Moriarty) Donahue at Earlville, Illinois. He attended school at Bean Lake Country School near Westbrook. On November 19, 1934, he married Gertrude Leonard at Currie, Minnesota. He farmed near Westbrook until 1956. They then moved to New Ulm. He worked at the Farmers Co-op creamery. Then he owned and operated the Donahue Disposal Service, which he ran for 10 years. After retirement Melvin did odd jobs around the New Ulm area for various people.
He enjoyed working, especially in his garden, his lawn mower, snow blower, garden tiller and helping people. He lived for his family. During his 72 years of marriage to Gertrude he always had kind words to her and about her.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to NUACS, Divine Providence Community Home or the donor?s choice.
