Two City Men Winners of $5,000 Prizes
Regular ticket purchasing paid off for two city men yesterday when they each won 5,000 prizes in the state's January drawing in the mini-lottery.
Only three $5,000 winners were selected from the Capital District from among those who purchased the 50-cent tickets.
"I'm making no plans until I find out how much taxes I've got to pay," Melvin Rulison of 120 North Street said. He "guessed" he would "probably pay off some bills with it."
Max Frisch of 44 East Eighth Avenue said he "might take a vacation," but explained that he and his wife, Regina, "haven't made any plans yet."
Rulison, who purchased his ticket at Ly's Luncheonette, 14 Washington Street, said he gambles on the lottery each month, and has since the lottery began.
A machine staker at F. Rulison and Sons tannery in Johnstown, he is also a motor route delivery man for The Leader-Herald.
He and his wife, Karen, have two children, Elizabeth, 15 months old and Mark, four years old.
Like Rulison, Frisch said he and his wife "buy them all." The winner was purchased at Forest Hill Towers, only about a block away from where Rulison picked up his winner.
He was happy about winning the $5,000, but remarked that "I'd like to hit that $50,000 one," and the $1 million prize "would be nice to take."
At present, Frisch is employed by his son, proprietor of Tri-County Electric on Elmwood Avenue Extension. Before moving to the city three years ago, he lived in Perth, where be operated a grocery store until about 1960.
Several others in this area won $50 prizes.
