A two-year-old Town of Minden girl died last night of injuries suffered earlier when she was struck by revolving blades of a tractor-powered lawn mower at her home.
Montgomery County Sheriff William S. Weft said Melody Ann Bowley died at 11:40 p.m.
in Faxton Hospital, Utica, as the result of injuries suffered about 8 p.m.
The accident happened at the Bowley home on River Rd., west of Fort Plain, where the girl
lived with her mother, Mrs. Dorcas Bowley.
The victim's uncle, Howard Sanders, was operating a rotary lawn mower attached to a farm tractor and was backing the machine when he ran over the little girl.
Sanders said he was clearing grass from an area in front of a barn door and did not see the
little girl. The tractor, with a large rotary mower attached underneath, ran over the girl and Sanders was unaware of the accident until he drove the tractor forward.
The girl suffered a compound fracture of the skull when hit by the mower blades.
She was taken to Little Falls Hospital in the Swartz ambulance and was then transferred to Faxton Hospital, where she died about four hours after the accident.
Officer Carlo Polidorl of the St. Johnsville Police Department assisted in the investigation.
Melody Ann Bowley was born in Amsterdam on April 10, 1965.
Survivors include her mother, the former Dorcas Sanders; two brothers, David and Daniel; a sister, Kim, and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Gottung, all of Fort Plain RD.
