- Obituary (Legacy.com)
Mildred Pratt, 75, passed peacefully from this life to the next on September 24, 2013. Millie was born on March 29, 1938, in Schenectady, New York, the daughter of Floyd E. Mereness and Marguerite (McLeod) Mereness. She attended Lincoln Elementary School, Nott Terrace Junior High School, and graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1956. She married Rupert Pratt, September 16, 1956. They lived in Newburgh, New York and Huntington, West Virginia before returning to the Capital District in 1959. They lived in Burnt Hills until 1972, when they moved to Glenville, making it their permanent home.
Work with a constructive purpose was Millie's passion. Whether studying, teaching, raising two sons, watching over grandchildren, or working at a church function, she was never satisfied with anything but her own best effort. Her work life began early; she worked in the office of Leach Products in Schenectady while still in high school. In Newburgh, she worked in Schoonmaker Department store; in Huntington she was a billing clerk at Foster Thornburg, a large furniture distributer, while at the same time taking evening and early morning classes at Marshall University. Millie was always shy around large groups of people, so when WSAZ television in Huntington offered her a job that would have required some on-air time, she declined.
After returning to New York, she worked for a year at Leach Products before enrolling at Albany State University. She overcame her shyness to take part in a new closed circuit television educational program at the university. Millie graduated from Albany State University with a bachelor of science degree in 1964, and in 1966, earned a master of science degree in business education. In a professional career as a business teacher, she taught in the Schenectady City School District at Central Park Junior High School, Mont Pleasant High School, and Schenectady High School. In addition, she taught night courses in several area school districts. Throughout her career, she worked hard to instill in her students the desire to be the best you can be, setting an example by her own actions. Millie retired from teaching in 2000. She was a longtime member of Delta Pi Epsilon, a national business teachers' fraternity, and served for a year as president of the New York chapter.
Millie is survived by Rupert Pratt, her loving husband of 57 years; two sons, Gregory Pratt (Purvesh Shah) of South Orange, New Jersey and Jonathan Pratt (Boriana) of Hamilton, New York; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Pratt, Nathan Pratt, and Andrew Pratt; a sister, Marion Kverek (Richard); nephews, Robert (Maureen) Kverek and Bruce (Dawn) Mereness; nieces, Debbie (Rich) Rose and Sharon (Chris) Eddy; several cousins; friends too numerous to name, but two special longtime friends are Nancy DeVito and Ros Weiss. Millie was preceded in death by her mother, Marguerite (McLeod) Mereness; her father, Floyd E. Mereness; her brother, Floyd D. (Eleanor) Mereness.
She loved tending her flower gardens. For a couple of growing seasons near retirement, she planted and tended a small flower garden within the otherwise desolate quad at Schenectady High School. It was not unusual to see her there in her straw hat early in the morning or after her classes. She worried that once she retired no one would step up to care for the flowers, so she nailed her hat to a bench as a reminder. She excelled at planning trips and arranging travel agendas, among them family trips to Bulgaria, England, California, West Virginia, Maine, and Alaska. She loved staying in B&Bs and getting to know people who lived in the area she was visiting. Above all, she loved her family and looked forward to family gatherings and trips to visit them. Millie amazed her doctors by her long and valiant fight against pancreatic cancer.
The family wishes to thank her doctors, the loving staff at NYOH Rexford Cancer Center, pastors, friends, and relatives for all the support given to Millie in the past few months. Schenectady Hospice has given superb service at a very trying time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308 or to a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at Scotia United Methodist Church, 201 N. Ten Broeck St., Scotia, followed by interment in Memory Gardens, Colonie. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at The White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia.
