28880. Gary L Cortright

 - Obituary (The Leader, Corning, NY, Jul 27, 2011
Gary L. Cortright, 59, passed away July 25, 2011 at home with his family at his side.
He was born May 18, 1952 in Corning, NY to Stanley and Ida Cortright. He is survived by his mother Ida Cortright, sister Elaine (Mary Gail) Guilbeau, brothers Thomas (John) and Jeffrey (Jean) Cortright, and several uncles and aunts. Also his nieces Donna (Stanley) Gridley and Sherrie (Blane) Wilson, nephews Aaron Guilbeau and William (Kristy) Cortright, great nieces and nephews Jarod, Jenna, Julia and Jordan Gridley, Morgan and Ryan Cortright, Brittany Forte and Breanna Wilson. He is also survived by his very special and loving friends Bobby, Nancy and Kylie Downing, Shawn Barnes, Dwight Thomas, and all his Crystal Lanes bowling family. He was predeceased by his father Stanley.
Gary graduated from Corning Painted Post East High School in 1971.
He spent 4 years in the United States Army Reserves. He was employed at Crystal Lanes Bowling Center for 44 years, beginning as a pin chaser at the age of 15. He was mentored by Thomas Sullivan, then owner of Crystal Lanes, who took him under his wing and taught him the bowling business and eventually made him his general manager. He bowled in several leagues and held several positions in those leagues. He finally achieved his first perfect game in 2009. During his years at Crystal Lanes he worked very hard to instill good sportsmanship in all his youth bowlers. He worked with youth leagues from the bumper bowlers to college bowlers. His home made soups and macaroni and cheese were crowd pleasers at the lunch bar and he catered many bowling banquets.
When Crystal Lanes was devastated by fire in the 70’s, Gary went to work for a short time for his brother Tom at Aaah Flowers by Cortright and was a very talented floral designer. He helped practically every holiday. He also drove school bus for a few short years. He was a member of the Corning Elks Club.
Gary had a great love for animals and right up to the end enjoyed sitting on his front porch watching the birds at his feeders and throwing corn for the wild turkeys. He grew up riding his horse Dixie and helping with the family farm animals. The love of his life was his dog Sammie, who lovingly laid on his bed during his last moments.
Gary had a special love for Dr. Kathleen Hallinan, her staff and family and for Karen Hogue and her staff at Corning Apothecary. The family wishes to thank them and the doctors, surgeons, and staff at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and Southern Tier Hospice. We will always keep you in our hearts for all the love and care given Gary during his 13 month illness.
Gary loved flowers and would appreciate them but the family would also ask that donations be made in Gary’s name to Southern Tier Hospice, Corning Youth Bowling or cancer research at Strong Memorial.
The family invites friends and family to his visitation hours at Acly Stover Funeral Home, 327 E. Second St. in Corning from 4-7 on Thursday July 28th. Graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Caton on Friday, “July 29th at 11:00 am. A gathering will follow at Crystal Lanes immediately following the service. A special thanks to the Sullivan family and staff at Crystal Lanes for the love and support given to Gary and the family.
