 - Newspaper Article (Fulton county Republican, Johnstown, NY,October 12, 1891)
Jacob L. Frederick familiarly known as "Old Jake Loady" narrowly escaped death, while walking on the railroad track October 14th. Mr. Frederick and the 5:30 train from Gloversville, reached a small bridge that spans the creek near Thompson & Lord's, shoe leather factory at the same [time]. When the engineer caught sight of him he whistled for him to leave the track and slowed up the train, but Mr. Frederick paid no attention to the signals, not thinking the train was so close to him. He crossed the bridge just ahead of the engine and, as he reached terra firma, and placed one foot outside the rail, the front of the engine struck him on the left shoulder and tipped him over into the ditch where he lay, flat on his back. The train was stopped as soon as possible and backed to the scene of the accident. A large crowd had already gathered, but Mr. Frederick had gotten up without assistance and taken himself off up the ditch, refusing to again walk up the track. He was uninjured except from the shock  and fall.

  Killed While Making His Escape.
Adam Frederick, a son of Jacob L. Frederick, and a former resident of Johnstown, entered the regular army in 1891, and was sent to Wyoming. After a short time he escaped from the service and was subsequently recaptured and sentenced to the military prison. While being taken there he again made his escape, and sought refuge with some cattle raisers. The latter were surrouded by about two hundred cattle thieves and when the soldiers in pursuit of Frederick came along, Frederick sought to get away by jumping from a building and was riddled with bullets by the cattle thieves. Such is the story that has reached his Johnstown friends by a letter from that section.

Hiram Allen, an old and highly respected resident of the town of Ephratah, died a t 7 o'clock Sunday evening. He breathed his last on the farm, one mile north from Ephratah village, where he was born about 74 years ago.
Nineteen years ago he was afflicted by a peculiar nerve trouble on his tongue. Eminent physicians were consulted and operations were performed but the trouble gradually increased until life became a burden and his torture was terrible to endure. Several weeks since he also sustained a stroke of paralysis.
He was a very industrious man who possessed an iron constitution, and spent most of his days in farming as long as his health would permit. He was a staunch Republican from the formation of the party and represented the town of Ephratah in the Fulton county board of supervisors considerably more than a quarter of a century ago.
He had been a member of the Methodist church of Ephratah for many years. He was unable to attend the funeral of his daughter, Mrs. Emina Berry, who died in this city April 7th
of the present year. His first wife was Betsey Ann Getman, oldest daughter of the late James Getman of the village of Ephratah. His widow by whom he is survived was formerly Mrs. Melvina Gray, also of Ephratah village.
His sons are James H., Alfred A., Elijah V., and Clark J., the two last named residing at Gloversville, and Alfred A. residing on the old homestead in Ephratah. His daughters are Mrs. Elmira Spencer of Gloversville, and Miss Cora Allen, who resided with her parents on the farm. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ambrose Coolman and Mrs. Daniel Snell, both residing in the town of Ephratah.
The funeral will be held from his late residence at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. The remains will be buried in the family plot in the village cemetery at Ephratah.

 - Obituary (The Morning Herald, Gloversville, NY, Friday, March 11, 1921)
Clark J . Allen, aged 53 years, died yesterday morning at eight o'clock, at his home, 119 Forest street. It is believed that rubbing his face with a glove directly after he had shaved was the indirect cause of his death.
During the last snow storm about ten days ago, Mr. Allen had shaved in the morning and then went out to shovel his walk. An itching sensation on the sjde of his face caused him to stop work and for relief he rubbed his face with his gloved hand, then finished his Job. A few days later blood poisoning developed in the same spot and despite the best of medical attention the affliction grew steadily worse and resulted in death yesterday.
Mr. Allen was a member of the Maccabees of this city and widely known. When a boy in Ephratah he joined the Methodist church there, and had retaianed that faith ever since.
Beside s his wife, Martha, the survivors are two brothers, James V. Allen, of Canada, and Alfred Allen of Ephratah; two sisters, Mrs. Elmira Spencer of Gloversville, and Mrs. Cora Miller, of Johnstown; his step-mother, Mrs. Melvlna Allen of Johnstown, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elijah Allen, of Gloversville; also several nieces, and nephews.
The funeral will be held at the late home Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Rev. H. C. Colebrook of the First Baptist church will officiate, and the interment will be in the family plot at Prospect Hill.
