SCARBOROUGH -- H. Rushton Harwood Jr., 96, died peacefully at Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores on July 14, 2014.
Born in Springfield, Mass., the son of Harry R. and Mildred Regina (Dillenback) Harwood, Rush graduated from Classical High School in 1935, Harvard University in 1939 and Harvard Business School in 1941.
On May 9, 1942, Rush married Anna Hobbs in Boston, Mass., and that day received his orders from the Navy to serve in WWII as Lieutenant on the U.S.S. Monticello. In 1951, they built a home in Winchester, Mass., where they lived for 52 years before moving to Piper Shores in Scarborough.
Rush first worked at Container Corporation of America in Chicago, Ill., and then for Thomas Strahan Co., Chelsea, Mass. From there, he had a long career in banking and investments, beginning as treasurer with Suffolk Franklin Savings Bank, and on to Vance Sanders & Co., Inc., United Investment Counsel, Inc. and The First National Bank of Boston.
Enthusiastically embracing a sense of civic duty, Rush made numerous contributions to the Winchester community such as chairman of the Republican Town Committee, Registrar of Voters, town meeting member, finance committee member, director of Winchester Red Cross and WHS Parent-Faculty Association board member, to name a few. A long-standing 33rd degree Mason, Masonry had great significance in his life as did the First Baptist Church of Winchester where he was chairman of the board of deacons.
Rush loved to travel and enjoyed taking his family on trips throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe. He also cherished sailing from Marblehead Harbor, Mass., on their boat, the 'Warema' named for his three children Walter, Regina and Martha, and vacationing in Cape Cod, Mass. In his retirement, he planned over 30 group trips that took Rush, Anna and many dear friends to every continent on the globe.
Always quick to share a pun, Rush was a gentleman, devoted husband and father, easy-going and likable with an ever-present upbeat attitude. Though he will be sorely missed, he will always be remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty, integrity, positive outlook and love of family and friends, keeping him ever close in our hearts.
Rush was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Anna Hobbs in 2006; and his son, Walter Hobbs Harwood of Portland, Ore., in 2008. He is survived by two daughters, Regina Harwood Klooster and husband Karl of McMinnville, Ore., and Martha Harwood McDavitt and her husband Stephen of Falmouth; a daughter-in-law, Carla Harwood of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Joshua Harwood and wife Sarah of Portland, Ore., Jessica Lopez and husband Ricardo of Portland, Ore., and twins, Anna and Katherine McDavitt of Falmouth; and two great-grandchildren, Noah and Maya Harwood of Portland, Ore

- It has been said the George was shot by an employee, some said he was shot by himself. No one was every charged with the crime. (Swartwout)- George Frederick Butts Death
George Butts Killed
[George was working as a creameryman at the Empire Creamery Company on Railroad Avenue, Spencer, as reported in his 1918 registration for the draft. He attended Morrisville College (in New York or Pennsylvania ?) and later worked for the Dairymen's League. He met his wife Rhoda Brown while she was clerking in the store at Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Earlier he had worked in Coudersport, Pennsylvania]
George Butts 1930
The Spencer Needle, 17 November 1932. George Butts, aged 32, son of Mrs. Harriet Butts of Spencer, was found shot through the head in the boiler room of the Nicholson, Pa, Dairyman's League milk plant, where he was superintendant, early Tuesday morning. Workmen, as they came to the plant about 5 o'clock, were horrified to find the body of Mr. Butts laying on the floor of the boiler room. Death must have been instantaneous as it is said the top of his head was blown off from the charge of the shotgun. It is believed he was shot by an assassin.
A message was sent to his mother here as soon as the body was found. She and her son Charles left at once for Nicholson to learn more of the particulars. The story, as best she could learn, seemed to carry out the belief that he had been murdered.
It was necessary to work part of the night at the plant. Mr. Butts took turns with other employees at the plant to do this. He went home to supper about 6 o'clock as usual, laid down for a short rest after supper and returned to the plant about 9 o'clock. A few minutes before 12 o'clock he drove his car to a restaurant nearby for a sandwich, and while eating the sandwich, sat and chatted with the restaurant keeper, returning to the plant to finish his work which was usually complete at 12 o'clock. This was the last seen of him until the workmen came on duty in the morning.
As they stepped to the boiler room door they found the body of Mr. Butts lying on the floor with the top of his head shot away. Two empty shells from a shotgun lay on the floor but no gun nor nothing else to give a clue could be found. It is believed robbery was the intent of the murderer, as all his money was gone. He had drawn his pay the day before and, as far as could be learned, had paid only his electric bill. He had most of his money with him but it was gone when his body was found.
It is believed Mr. Butts was about to quit work and go home for the night when accosted. He had taken off his white plant suit and rubber boots and was dressed in his street clothing and shoes.
State troopers were at once notified of the tragedy and are making an investigation.
His funeral was held at Nicholson at 10 o'clock and his remains brought to Spencer for burial in the Evergreen Cemetery … service at the … Masonic Lodge member of Spencer Lodge.
He is survived by his widow, one son about three years old, his mother Mrs. Harriet Butts, and one brother Charles Butts of Spencer, and one sister, Mrs. Jerome Hill of Binghamton.[Another version is that George was working to replace a missing employee who was the true target of the assassin, and therefore was killed by mistake. Coroner Billings stated on the Certificate of Death that the cause of death was suicide. Some have said that Billings was drunk most of the time. To my knowledge, no person was ever charged.
One must consider this event in light of the times and the place; which were at the height of the Great Depression and in a rural area favoring old-time neighbors over outsiders.]
