- 1938-1946 U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Record - Name: Robert D Saltsman - Birth Year: 1923 - Race: White, citizen (White) - Nativity: Fulton Co., NY- Enlistment: 5 Nov 1942, Albany, NY - Branch: Air Corps - Grade: Private.
Education: 4 years of high school - Marital Status: Single, without dependents - Height: 69 - Weight: 198.
- Comment by his son, Alan about his father Robert D. SALTSMAN's enlistment in WW II: My mother told me that one of the reasons that my father enlisted was so that he could choose to be in the Air Corps. The reason for this is because he liked airplanes. If he had waited until he was drafted, he might not have been able to choose the branch of the service that he would have gone into.
- Stories that my dad told me about his service in WW II in China.
(1) He and his buddies once went duck hunting with a machine gun because they wanted their Chinese chef to make them duck soup.
(2) While celebrating the Fourth of July he and his buddies were setting off some firecrackers in the "bunkhouse" and they accidentally set one of their beds on fire.
(3) He almost married a Chinese girl and brought her back, but he was afraid that she wouldn't fit into American culture.
(4) He told me that his nickname while in the service was "Fozzy" (or Fozzie). He told me that he acquired this nickname because in boot camp he and the other soldiers were forced to go into a room containing phosgene gas (FOZ-jeen), a poisonous gas that was used in WW I. They were wearing gas masks, but were told to remove their mask for a second and inhale a small amount of the gas, then replace the mask on your face and exit the room. When my dad inhaled the gas he passed out. I guess he had to be draggged out of the room. The way he told the story to me, it seemd as if he and his buddies thought this was humorous and his buddies gave him the nickname Fozzy/Fozzie. This nickname is pronounced "FOZ-ee." I searched the Internet and found no references to WW II soldiers in boot camp being exposed to poisonous gas. The purpose of this exercise was that the soldiers would experience the early signs of poisoning by phosgene gas so if they were on duty and experienced that, they would know to put their gas mask on.
- Information that my dad told me about his service in WW II (miscellaneous information)
(5) He told me that while in India, he was served rice that had worms in it. I assume that he was on his way back home to the United States. I don't think that he actually served in India.
(6) He brought back a wallet from Egypt. Again, I believe that he bought this as a souvenir while in Egypt. I don't believe that he served there.
(7) He brought back a lot of things from China.
