David Emil Axelson

 - Obituary (Find A Grave)
On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, David Axelson, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 86. Dave was born on August 20, 1934, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, NY, to Roy and Alice (Caylor) Axelson. He was raised in western New York, attending public schools and Buffalo State Teachers' College before being drafted into the Army for two years. At age 20, Dave met the love of his life, Ann Kelsey, and married her six years later, on May 28, 1960. In 1961, Dave and Ann moved to Whittier, California. After another one-year callback by the Army, Dave completed his BA degree at Whittier College, and his master's degree at Pepperdine University. Upon earning his teaching credentials, Dave was hired by the East Whittier City School district, where he taught primarily 8th grade math at Hillview Middle School in Whittier, until his retirement in 1996. After retiring, Dave volunteered at the La Habra Library.
Dave really enjoyed watching sports, cheering especially his Buffalo Bills, and anyone playing the Patriots. He always loved the beach, and enjoyed several years of vacations at beach houses in Balboa Beach, and then at a time share for over 20 years at Dana Point. When at home, he enjoyed swimming and laying out in the sun. And he loved traveling with Ann and various friends, both near and far, especially cruises.
But most of all, Dave loved people. Whether his family, his students, his co-workers, the random clerk at the grocery store, or the office staff at his doctor or dentist, Dave's friendly demeanor and warm sense of humor was contagious. He laughed with people, not at them. And whether as a friend, role model, mentor, or teacher, his love of people impacted hundreds, if not thousands, of lives, in the best possible way.
Dave is preceded in death by his father Roy and mother Alice. He is survived by his wife, Ann, his brothers, Ted and Jim, his sister, Karen, his favorite first son, Bill, his favorite second son, Jeff, his favorite daughter, Julie, his favorite daughter-in-law, Sherri, two favorite grandsons, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews, no doubt all his favorites too.
