Raymond W. Len(e)ker, 63, Cherry Valley businessman, died early Monday at the Bassett hospital, Cooperstown, where he had been a patient for 18 days. Funeral will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday in Cherry Valley. The Rev. Walter H. Read, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Fort Plain cemetery. Mr. Leneker was born in the Town of Minden, July 4, 1889, son of Charles and Mary (Body) Leneker. He had lived in Cherry Valley for 36 years, moving here from Fort Plain. He had been an automobile dealer for 46 years ... On August 5, 1916, he married Irene Shults of Fort Plain. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Victor of Cherry Valley; four daughters, Mrs. Hyman Ange of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Robert Van Valkenburg of Canajoharie, the Misses Virginia and Jean Leneker at home, six grandchildren; two brothers, J. Harvey Leneker of Canastota, and Arthur C. Leneker of Fort Plain.

FORT PLAIN, NY — Martin "Leonard" Shults, 89, of State Highway 5S, Fort Plain, passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening, May 8, 2004, at his home.
Born in Stone Arabia on March 23, 1915, a son of Martin and Marie Fonda Shults.
He was a lifelong Fort Plain resident and was a graduate of Fort Plain High School.
Mr. Shults worked for over 25 years on the family farm in Fort Plain. He then went to work as a truck driver for over 20 years for Agway in Fort Plain, until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the Reformed Church of Fort Plain. He was also a member of the Fort Plain Masonic Lodge No. 433 for over 50 years, and was a former member of the Hallsville Grange.
He married Marianna Lieber Shults on June 6, 1936. She passed away on Jan. 29, 2003. He was also pre-deceased by an infant son, Leonard John Shults, an infant daughter, Annette Marie Shults, and a brother, Charles Shults.
Survivors include two sons, Gary L. Shults and his wife, Helen of Canajoharie, and Manly E. Shults and his wife, Karen of Delhi; two daughters, Sondra Failing of Fort Plain, and Gayle Smith and her husband, Jack of Cooperstown; one brother, Manly Shults of Fort Plain; two sisters, Gertrude Waner of Salem, and Margaret Bollen of Fort Plain; two sisters-in-law, Janet O'Bryan and her husband, JB of Florida, and Doris Stiles of Amsterdam; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Reformed Church, 165 Canal St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Nancy Ryan, presiding. Interment will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
The family received relatives and friends Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid County Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Reformed Church of Fort Plain or the Masonic Home.

ST. JOHNSVILLE, NY — Mrs. Marianna Shults, 88, of State Highway 5S, Ft. Plain, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at St. Johnsville Nursing Home where she had been a resident.
Born on Jan. 13, 1915, in Hallsville, she was the daughter of John and Antoinette Dievendorf Lieber.
She was a lifelong area resident and graduate of Ft. Plain High School. She went on to graduate from Albany Business College.
She was employed for over 20 years as a Bookkeeper for G.L.F., which later became Agway of Ft. Plain. until retiring in 1970.
Mrs. Shults was a member of Ft. Plain Reformed Church and served on its consistory.
She was a faithful member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Otsquago Chapter, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Turtle Club, National Bell Association and former member of The Hallsville Grange.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Shults, whom she married on June 6, 1936: two sons, Gary L. Shults and his wife, Helen of Canajoharie, and Manly F. Shults and his wife, Karen of Delhi; two daughters, Sondra Failing of Ft. Plain, and Gayle S. Smith and her husband, Jack of Cooperstown; two sisters, Janet O'Brian of Crawfordville, Fla., and Doris Stiles of Amsterdam; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death in 1937 by an infant son, Leonard John Shults and an infant daughter, Annette Marie Shults in 1954. She was also predeceased in 2001 by a sister, Margaret Thompson.
Calling hours are Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, where The Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 5:45 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, at 12:30 p.m. at the Ft. Plain Reformed Church, Canal Street, with the Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating.Burial will take place in Ft. Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Edward V. Waner, 68, a resident of Klock Road, St Johnsville RD 3, was pronounced dead on arrival at Little Falls Hospital Wednesday afternoon after having been stricken at home.
He was born in the Town of Canajohane, June 22, 1914. the son of Edward J and Olive Smith Waner and was a lifetime resident
He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School and at one time was employed by the Beech-Nut Packing Company, Canajoharie.
Mr Waner attended the Lutheran church.
He was twice married. His first wife was the former Agnes Ash, who died on December 10, 1962. On September 14, 1967, he married Gertrude Shults Hilton.
He is survived by his widow; a step-daughter, Mrs James (Marie) Conrad, and step-grandson, Thomas C Woods, both of Salem, and several cousins. A son. Donald, pre-deceased his father on Jan 1, 1977.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock from the Swartz Funeral Home, Inc., 34 Center St. Fort Plain Burial will be made in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Fort Plain — Alton Empie, 45, of Main St. died yesterday
in his home after a heart attack. He was a food service company employe. He was born June 27, 1915, in Fort Plain, the son of Rueben and Edna Schults Empie. He was educated in Fort Plain schools. He married Elizabeth Eaker of Little Falls.
Mr. Empie was a member of the Reformed Church; Adult Fellowship of the Universalist Church and Mohawk Valley Post 3275, VFW, all of Fort Plain.
Mr. Empie was a World War II veteran. He served with the 84th Field Artillery Battalion, Ninth Division, in Africa, the D-Day invasion of Europe and in the European campaign. Mr. Empie received the Purple Heart, seven battle stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
For the past 15 years, he had been employed by the Zero Foods Co., now known as Your Home Food Service, Fort Plain.
He leaves, besides his wife, a daughter, Johannah, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Pardee, and Miss Mae Empie, both of Fort Plain; a brother, Manfred Empie, Fort Plain; a step-daughter, Mrs. Richard Pitkin, Camillus; three step-grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles and
cousins.
The funeral will be at 2 Tuesday from the Gray, Funeral Home, Fort Plain, with the Rev. Raymond Scott, pastor of the Universalist Church, Fort Plain, officiating. Burial
will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Mohawk Valley VFW Post will conduct military rites at Graveside.

Fort Plain, N.Y. - Mrs. Elizabeth (Eaker) Desmond Empie, 96, of Fort Plain, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at Saratoga Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on Feb. 18, 1914, she was the daughter of Henry Clay Eaker and Maude (Hart) Eaker of Little Falls. She graduated from Little Falls High School in 1932. On Oct. 27, 1945 she married Alton (Rube) Shults Empie of Fort Plain. Liz loved life and brightened every room she was in. She played bridge in two card clubs in Little Falls until her illness, driving her sister and two dear friends Carmeta Stahler and Eve Fuelleman. Later they would celebrate winning or commiserate on losing at McDonald’s in Palatine Bridge or “The Stand” (Parkside Restaurant) in St. Johnsville. When she was with the family, the game was pinochle. She enjoyed teaching the game to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And she loved to win. Mrs. Empie loved to read, keeping the Fort Plain Free Library and her granddaughter Becky at the Corinth Free Library busy supplying her with books. She also loved her trips to visit her daughter Jody and son-in-law, Dan DiLoreto, in Rochester. Shopping trips, lunches, the Century Club and being with family friends were important agendas. When staying with daughter Sheila and son-in-law, Dick Pitkin, in Corinth, pinochle and lunch at Steininger’s, Mollie’s, Panera’s as well as larger family gatherings were in order. In earlier years, Liz enjoyed traveling to California, Arizona, England, Canada and the New England states. When Liz was young she worked at the Little Falls Felt Shoe Company, and then went to school to become a stenographer. Later she worked in the offices of Chr. Hanson Laboratories, Fort Plain High School Guidance Office and Beech-Nut Foods. She retired from Agway, Fort Plain, in 1979.
She is survived by her daughters, Sheila (Dr. Richard) Pitkin, Corinth, Jody (Daniel) DiLoreto, Rochester; sister, Edith E. Beck of Fort Plain; five grandchildren, Cynthia (Ahmad Hamzehdoost) Pitkin of Groton, Mass., Rebecca (David) Fasulo of Corinth, Alson Pitkin (Emily Rossier) of Troy, Jennifer (Frank) Palumbo of Canton, Alex (Shari) Pitkin of Somerville, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Katie, Kiana and Hamed Hamzehdoost, Daniel and Amy Fasulo, Myrrh Pitkin, Francesco and Cristiano Palumbo, Samantha and Spencer Pitkin; as well as several nieces and nephews. She also leaves dear friends, Beverly Fasulo, Mary Palumbo and her bridge partners. Liz was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Harold Eaker, Marilyn McAllister, Austin Eaker ad her beloved husband Rube Empie.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lydius Street, Fort Plain, on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 12 p.m. with a visitation preceding the service from 11 to 12 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.

Mrs. Ada M. Casler, 91, formerly of Casler Road, Fort Plain, New York died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Little Falls Hospital. Born on May 25, 1921 in the Town of Palatine, NY, she was the daughter of Harrison Shults and Dorothy Saltsman Shults. She was educated at New Turnpike School in Stone Arabia and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Casler recently spent some time in Palatine Nursing Home, previously residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Craig Stevens for 4 ½ years. Mrs. Casler was the co-owner of the Otsquago View Farm, which has been known as the Casler Homestead since 1790, for over 50 years, retiring in the Spring of 1993. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Plain, where she was also a member of the Church Council for 6 years.
Mrs. Casler was a member of the Department of Cooperative Extension of Montgomery County, member of the Farm Bureau and Otsquago Grange.
On October 19, 1941 in Stone Arabia, NY, Ada was married to Gerald C. Casler. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1992. She was also predeceased by her son, Bruce Casler and sisters, Anita Steciak, Norma Sitterly, Evelyn Eckler and Lelah Mae Brown. Mrs. Casler is survived by 3 daughters, Yvonne (Victor) Nestle, Linda (Craig) Stevens, Gail (Robert) Burkhart, all of Fort Plain, NY; 2 sons, Laverne (Veronica) Casler and Varnum H. (Kelly) Casler all of Canajoharie, NY; daughter-in-law, Earlene Casler of Mohawk, NY; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granchild. Mrs. Casler is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 10:00am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Plain with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, April 1, 2013 from 4:00-7:00pm at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date.

FORT PLAIN - Gerald and Ada Casler of RD 3, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house celebration given in their honor by their children on Oct. 19, at the Freysbush United Methodist Church, with 180 guests in attendance.
Gerald and Ada were married Oct. 19, 1941, at the home of the bride in the town of Ephratah. She is the daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy Saltsman Shults. The Rev. Lewis Wagshaw officiated with immediate family and friends in attendance. Maid of honor was Lelah Mae Shults Brown, sister of Mrs. Casler, who resides in Rome. Best man was the brother of the bridegroom, Varnum N. Casler, Fort Plain.
Mr. and Mrs. Casler have resided on the Caster Homestead on Casler Road in the Town of Minden all of their 50 yean of marriage, where Mr. Caster operated a dairy farm until 1987, when their daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Craig Stevens, took over operation of the farm. The elder Casler still reside in the beautiful large homestead, totally remodeled by Ada.
Gerald and Ada have six married children: Son, Bruce, who resides in Mohawk with wife Earline (Dillenbeck); daughters, Yvonne, wife of Victor Nestle Jr., Linda, wife of Craig M. Stevens; Gail, wife of Robert Burkhart and sons, Laverne and Veronica (Barnes) and Varnum H. and Vickie (Oeser), all of whom reside in Fort Plain.
Mr. Caster, a semi-retired farmer, still enjoys trucking, buying, selling cattle and doing field work on the farm. He is a 50-year member of DairyLea Co-Op. He has been active in many organizations such as 4 H, Grange, Farm Bureau, Montgomery County Agricultural Society, Agway, Eastern Artificial Breeders Assoc., Holstein Breeders Assoc. He also served on Fort Plain Central School Board of Education for 12 years and was board president for one term.
Mrs. Casler occupies herself with lawn and garden work and total care of the large 14-room home. She also is very active with American Dairy Association, Farm Bureau and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Fort Plain.
