Earl R. Mathews, 69, died Saturday in Little Falls Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Mathews was born Feb 29, 1892 in Utica, son of William and Carrie Getman Mathews. He married Mae Waghorne in Sauquoit. Mrs. Mathews died in 1951. Mr. Mathews was a textile worker by trade and was employed for many years by the Willowvale Bleachery, retiring in 1951. Mr. Mathews was a member of Willowvale Methodist Church and Sauquoit Valley Lodge, F&AM. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Lois Gardner of Clay; a son, Robert E. of Salisbury, a sister, Mrs. Blanche Loomis, Utica; a brother, Horatio, Willowvale; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 tomorrow in the Willowvale Methodist Church, with the Rev. Calvin Zimmer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, Clayville. Calling hours at the Neilsen Funeral Home, Dolgeville, are tonight and tomorrow afternoon and evening.

The bride's father gave a horse valued at $250. A native Utican and former resident of Chadwicks, killed in a gold mine cave-in will be buried Thursday in Phoenix, Ariz.
William Mathews Sr, 61, was one of two miners whose bodies were discovered buried under an estimated 100 tons of rock, silt and muck in their placer gold mine about 90 miles north of Phoenix
The accident occurred last Thursday but it was not discovered until Saturday. The bodies were recovered Sunday. Mathews and friend. Pete Speakman, 52, were believed to be inexperienced miners. They had been living in a trailer on the claim.
Mr. Mathews was born July 14, 1897 in Utica, a son of the late William and Carrie Getman Mathews. He was educated in Utica public schools.
On Jan. 14, 1922. he married Reva Rich. They moved to Chadwicks in 911 [sic]. For several years, he operated the Chadwicks Hardware store. Two years ago, the couple moved to Arizona.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, William Jr., of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Mrs. Everett Crackenbush of Torrance, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Walter Loomis of Utica; two brothers, Horatio Mathews of Chadwicks; Earl Mathews of Salisbury, N. Y., and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday in Phoenix with burial in a Phoenix cemetery.

CHEPACHET - Paul R. Bunce, Sr., 77, Richfield Hill Road, Town of Richfield a retired Univac employee died Wednesday at Potsville Hospital, Potsville, PA.
He was born November 5, 1903 in the Town of Norway, Herkimer County,son of Irvin and Anna Rank Bunce and attended the area schools. He was married in 1923 to Clara Miller and the couple resided in Frankfort, she died in 1950. In 1955 he married Wanda Burke. The couple had resided at their present home since. He was employed by Univac as a computer repair technician. He was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the International Association of Machinists #1063 in Utica.
Surviving bresides his wife are two daughters, Miss Bera [sic] Bunce, Utica and Mrs. Ruth Congdon, Herkimer; two sons, Ulysses Bunce, Ilion and Paul R. Bunce Jr., Frankfort, one step-daughter, Mrs. Ellen Welch, Schodack Landing, N.Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Marian Robellard, Mohawk; Miss Mavis Bunce and Mrs. Leta Perry, Ilion; three brothers, Ivan Bunce, Lunn Bunce and Earl Bunce, all of Frankfort, also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. from the Wilcox Funeral Home, West Winfield, with the Rev. William Bird officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Poland. Friend may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9.

After Cooperstown State Police had led a search Wednesday afternoon and evening of last week for Mrs. Mae Miller Griffin, thirty-one-year-old Richfield Springs woman, who had been missing from her home since. Monday night, she came out of hiding at 10 o'clock Wednesday night and sought food and protection in the home of Mrs. Julia Brooks, Hotel street, of that village.
Meanwhile, Sgt. John L. Cunningham, Corp. D. R. Keown, and Tr. M. V. Haskins arrested Leo Griffin, the husband, Thursday afternoon on a disorderly conduct charge. Arraigned before Justice B. J. Filkins, Griffin was committed to Otsego county jail in default of bail. On Monday he was released on bail and the case sent to the Children's Court.
It was learned that Mrs. Griffin had walked out of her own home around midnight Monday in zero weather without coat or outer clothing to take refuge in the upper loft of the Brooks barn. There she had remained without food and protection from the cold, crouched on a mattress with discarded clothing, which she found near the matress, as her only covering.
Mrs. Brooks gave her food, hot coffee and lodging for the night. She reported her appearance to the Police Thursday morning as they were renewing their search.
She is the mother of several children, the oldest of whom is nine years and the youngest five month. Two died in infancy. Griffin had recently returned home from Bethlehem. Pa., where he had been employed.- Obituary (unsourced)
Mae P. Osborne, 79, of Richfield Springs, sied September 22, 1990, at Mohawk Valley General Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Millers Mills, NY, on May 19, 1911, the daughter of Ulysses and Bertha (Getman) Miller, and spent her childhood years in Millers Mills. She was married to Leo Griffin in 1929. He died in 1948. she then married Donald Osborne in 1957.
She is survived by her husbane, Donald; 12 children, Fred Griffin, Edward Griffin, Dorothy Rowland, Gloria Smalldone and Vivian McGraw, all of Ilion, Leo Griffin and Victoria Buamonte, both of Utica, Richard Griffin, of California, Mary Hagadorn, of Herkimer, Doris Griffin, of Minnesota and Debra Clark, of Richfield Springs; 29 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. she was predeceased by her brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be on Wednesday, September 26, at 1 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston Funeral Home, 30 South St. Edmeston, with the Rev. Leon Oaks-Lee officiating. Interment will be at Burlington Flats Cemetery.

Leo Roger Griffin of the town of Warren, who was crushed to death October 8th when the car under which he was working slipped off its supports and fell on his chest, was buried in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville, Tuesday, following the funeral service at the McGrath Funeral Home. The Reverend C Frederic Fraser, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Richfield Springs, officiated.
The gas tank of the car fell on Griffin's chest. Neighbors failing to extracate the man called the Richfield Springs fire department. Jacks from the fire department pumper and Dr. Hirshfeld's car were used in raising the machine from Griffin's body. Dr. Hirshfeld thought the man had been dead about ten minutes when his body was released.
Leo Griffin, father of 11 living children, ten of whom were at home, was 39 years old, having been born in Richfield Springs on March 28. 1909, the son of the late Leon Griffin, and Mrs. Edward Hughes who now resides in Holland Patent. He attended Richfield Springs High School. On May 25, 1929. he married Mae T. Miller of Millers Mills.
He drove a coal truck for E. D. Conklin and Son for several years and had lately been employed at the Remington Rand Plant in Ilion. He was unemployed at the time of his death.
There survive in addition to the wife and mother, a son. James, living in Otego and the following ten children ranging from two to 16 years of age living at home. Edward Leo. Jr., Richard, Dorothy, Mary, Doris, Patricia, Gloria, Victoria and Vivian; also three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Ward. Mrs. Dorothy Morrell and Mrs. Carl Leach all of Utica; two brothers. Emory of Ilion and Marshall of Utica: a half sister and half brother. Mrs. Marjorie Leonard and William Griffin both of Herkimer.

Born Aug. 21, 1912 in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of Fred and Florence E. (Nelson) Porter.
Mrs. Behan was a graduate of Fort Edward High School.
She was a communicant of St. Cecelia's Church in Springdale.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas H. Behan of Springdale and several neices and nephews.
Frinds may call from 10 to 1 a.m. today at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. Hudson Falls.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
The Rite of Commital will follow at Union Cemetery in the Town of Fort Edward.

SPRIGDALE, Conn. Thomas H. Behan, 90, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Courtland Gardens Nursing Home in Stamford, Conn.
Born on Feb. 6, 1911, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Jeremiah and Margaret (Hooley) Behan.
Mr. Behan was married to Dorthea Porter Behan who died on Oct. 13, 1997.
At one time he, owned Tommy's Welding in the Stamford, Conn. area.
Mr. Behan was a communicant of St. Cecelia's Church in Springdale. He was also a member of the Lion's Club in Stamford.
He enjoyed playing golf.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Behan was predeceased by his sister Lois Dougan and his brothe Sayles Behan.
Survivors include several neices and nephews and a sister-in-law, Anna Behanb of Hudson Falls.
Friends may call on Friday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Maind St. in Hudsson Falls.
A Funeral service will follow the calling hours at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Edward N, Leroux, pastor emeritus of St. Josep's Church in Fort Edward officiating.
The Rite of Commital will be later in the spring at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.
