 - Obituary (The Citizen, Herkimer, New York, Tuesday, March 24, 1885)
  STILL ANOTHER TRAGEDY.
Yesterday morning word was sent to Coroner Warner of Ilion, that a man had committed suicide near Petri's Corners about ten miles south of Herkimer. After the coroners return he furnished the following facts.
Oliver Burton Gates, a farmer aged 55 years, until yesterday lived on a farm of 40 acres in the town of Columbia. Yesterday morning he arose as usual at 6 o'clock and went out to do the chores: at 7 o'clock, his son Harry went out to the barn to call his father and found him hanging to an apple tree near the barn, having hung himself with one of the reins to a harness. The body was warm when found. Deceased recently lost $2,000 by the failure of a bank in Ohio and the loss had made him very despondent. Ill health had also somewhat affected his mind, and these circumsrances are supposed to have caused his death. Dr. Warner impanelled the following jury: H. J. Cristman, J. O. Bliss, Len Shaul, Menzo Crim, Israel Shepard, O. E. Shaul, N. A. Stearns. Four witneses were sworn.
Dr. Cristman made a post mortem examination. On the stand he stated that he had known deceased for ten years and had noticed that he was not all right. "Mentally he was erratic, incoherent and visionary." The jury rendered the following verdict:
That Oliver Burton Gates came to his death in the :own of Columbia on the 23rd day of March, 1885, between the hours of 6 A. M. and 7 A. M., by his own hands, from hanging with a strap from a limb of a tree near his barn, and the jury say that cause was melancholia. Deceased leaves a wife and the son referred to.

 - Obituary (Ilion Citizen, NY, Thursday, December 4, 1913)
The many friends of Madison Getman were shocked to learn of his death which occured early Thanksgiving morning at his home on River street. Mr. Getman, who was a son of the late William and Margaret Getman, was born 52 years ago in Ilion, where he spent his whole life. He studied at the public schools of the village and at an early age enter the employ of the Typewriter Company, with whom he remained until increasing weakness compelled him to retire over five weeks ago. Mr. Getman was an enthuastic member of the local council of the Royal Arcanium, and was for many years secretary of that order. He was a member of St. Augustine's Church, of which he was a vestryman, a faithful attendant of its services, and a loyal supporter of its work.
In spite of his failing health and almost continued illness for the past six years, he was always cheerful, with a quick and keen sympathy and natural kindness of heart which endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. He bore patiently his increasing suffering, and few of his friends suspected how much he endured and how near he was to the end. In his death Ilion loses a loyal citizen, the church a devout and faithful communicant and his wife a loving and tender helpmeet; but fortitude and a personal influence will not soon be forgotten.
The funeral was held from St. Augustine's church, at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Lloyd Benson conducted the services which were largely attended by friends, members of E. S. Walker Council No. 335, Royal Arcanum, and the members of the Woman's Auxiliary of St. Augustine's church. There were many beautiful floral tributes. The bearers were John Malloy, Geo. Drumm, A. E. Dengler, John Harrington, Geo. Sweet and M. Fogarty. The remains were taken to Frankfort for burial.
