Earl D. Kommer, 85, of Lake Park, MN, died Monday, November 5, 2012, in Sanford Health, Fargo, ND, surrounded by his family.
Earl was born September 2, 1927 in Dilworth, MN, to Walter and Mabel (Getman) Kommer. He grew up and attended school in Dilworth, graduating in 1945. Earl enlisted in the United States Marines in 1945, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then attended Dakota Business College for one year. Earl then purchased numerous cattle trucks and hauled cattle in and out of the West Fargo Stockyard for many years. He then worked as a sports writer for the Red River Scene in Moorhead, before working as a bookkeeper for Smith, Follett and Crowell clothing distributors in Fargo. Earl retired after managing the Lake Park VFW/American Legion for a short time. In 1990, Earl was inducted into the American Softball Association Hall of Fame after 60 years of playing softball and managing softball tournaments. Earl also enjoyed hunting, fishing and training field trial dogs.
He is survived by his sons, Toby (Michelle) Kommer of Fargo, ND, Russ (Diane Carver) Kommer of Fargo, ND, and Brad (Shawnette) Kommer of West Fargo, ND; two daughters, Lisa (Jason Curfman) Okke of Fargo, ND, and Cindy (Grant) Henderson of Crescent City, CA; fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Kommer and sister, Vivian Kuehl.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the North Dakota Heart Gallery, 5201 Bishops Blvd, Suite B, Fargo, ND 58104.

Thomas James LaClair, age 92, of Austin, died Friday, January 13, 2012 at Good Samaritan Society Comforcare.
Tom was born March 13, 1919 in Austin, Minnesota to Matie (Blowers) and Thomas LaClair Sr. He graduated from Austin High School in 1937. Tom worked for the Hormel Company in the mechanical division from 1937 to 1982. Just prior to Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving during the Air Offensive Europe, stationed in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia. Tom received the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak cluster, the Air Medal, the European Defense Medal with three battle stars, the American Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On July 24, 1943 he married Elizabeth Novak. Tom enjoyed golf and duplicate bridge.
Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years; his son, David (Joani), Rochester; daughter, Janet (Fred) Kusch, LaCrosse, WI; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Marion (Dick) Christiansen, Jacksonville, FL.
A Memorial Celebration will be held from 3-6 pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Courtyard Apartments Community Room, 310 2nd Ave. NE. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Austin Public Library.
