Elnora SENSABAUGH was born circa 1880 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania to Elliot Sensabaugh (1853-1917) and Rhoda J. HASKINS (1853-1928). She died on 10 September 1960 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan in the Pontiac State Hospital. Note that Elnora was sometimes known as Elinore.
By 1900, the Sensabaugh family had moved to Tuscola Township, Tuscola County, Michigan as they were found on the 1900 census.
On December 9, 1901 in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan, Elnora married Nathaniel Bruce Mather (1861-1935). Note that Nathaniel's middle name has also been listed as Brace but I have to wonder if that isn't a typo.
Elnora and Nathaniel had the following children:
Carl Clinton (1904-1988), Lillian (c1907- ), Lettie V. (c1908- ), Raymond E. (1910-1983), and Levi M. (1913-1920)
A city directory for 1903 showed the family living in Flint, but by the 1910 census, they were living in Millington in Tuscola County where their first son Carl was born. Additional city directories shows the family living in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan for the following years: 1917, 1918, 1919 and 1921. The 1920 census shows them living in Flint except for Nathaniel. Nathaniel was in jail and is found as a 'prisoner' on the 1920 census for county jail in Indianfields Township, Caro Village, Tuscola County, Michigan.
Tragedy struck the family when the youngest son, Levi, died from pneumonia on 17 Jan 1920 in Flint. Levi was buried in the Old Flint Cemetery in Flint but as I indicate below, this cemetery was demolished and the bodies re-interred in either Avondale Cemetery or the New Flint Cemetery.
On June 24, 1925 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, Elnora filed for divorce from Nathaniel stating as her cause for divorce, "extreme cruelty, desertion, and non-support". The divorce was granted on November 20, 1925.
Elnora was living in Flint when she married for a second time to George Aldelbert Deacons (1886-1979). They married on December 28, 1925 in Davison, Genesee County, Michigan.
Elnora and George lived in Flint as found on the city directories for 1926, 1928, 1929, 1934, 1935 and 1938. I haven't been able to find them on the 1930 census.
However, things had taken a turn for the worse for Elnora by the time of the 1940 census where she is listed as a patient in the Pontiac State Hospital in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. This was a public hospital for the insane. She is listed as married on the 1940 census so she and George were most likely still legally married.
Elnora's death certificate gave us the final information for Elnora.
She had been living with her oldest son Carl on Iowa Avenue in Flint, Michigan at the beginning of 1937 (we do not know if George was living with them). However, in about March of 1937, Elnora was committed to the Pontiac State Hospital. Her death certificate indicates that Elnora resided in the hospital for 23 years, 5 months and 16 days prior to her death on September 10, 1960.
Elnora's body was donated on September 12, 1960 to a medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan which most likely would mean her body was donated to the University of Michigan medical school.

Elnora and Nathaniel's son, Raymond, was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Nathaniel was buried in the Old Flint Cemetery in Flint, Michigan, but that cemetery was demolished in the 1950's. Many of those buried there were re-interred in Avondale Cemetery in Flint or moved to the New Flint Cemetery. Unfortunately, it appears there's not a clear record of who was buried where.
I've found out that there were at least 100 burials of patients in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pontiac at the edge of the cemetery (in Section 8 if I remember correctly). Unfortunately, those buried in the cemetery from the Pontiac State Hospital were buried and given a number only; they were not buried under their names which is extremely sad.

Birdie H. Lewis of Vassar, died on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Frankenmuth Lutheran Home.
Mrs. Lewis was born on March 14, 1911 in Vassar, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison and Harriet (Ratcliff) Haskins.
She and Hubert M. Lewis were united in marriage on October 10, 1928. He preceded her in death November 15, 1969.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Vassar, the Huldah Rebekah Lodge #168 and the American Legion Auxiliary #117. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, sewing and playing cards.
Survivors include her two daughters, Youtha (Stanley) Jacot of Ft. Meyers, Florida and Sharon (Jack) Hoornstra of Vassar; grandchildren, Scot (Carol) Jacot of Grayling, Roxy (Kim) Alvesteffer of Beaverton, John L. Hoornstra of Vassar, James (Vicki) Hoornstra of Grayling, Susan (Brian) Godde of Mt. Pleasant; great-grandchildren, Kristen (Stephen) Garber, Jason (Jamie) Jacot, Kevin Jacot, Eric and Jeanne Bublitz, Monica and John H. Hoornstra, Trudy and Christi Godde; great-great-grandchildren, Allen, Isaiah, Logan and Jeton Jacot; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hubert and a great-grandson, James Hoornstra.
A memorial service will take place on Sunday, July 11, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Vassar First Presbyterian Church with Reverend John Becker officiating. Family will be present to receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Those desiring may consider memorial contributions to the Vassar First Presbyterian Church.

Hubert M. Lewis of Vassar
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Clark Funeral Home, Vassar, for Mr. Hubert M. Lewis, 59, of 5001 S. Cottrell Rd., Vassar, who died suddenly at his home Saturday morning. The Rev. Clayton Turner officiated with burial in the Riverside Cemetery in Vassar. Mr. Lewis was born August 12, 1910 in Fostoria. He lived in the Vassar area all his life.
He married Birdie Haskin on October 10, 1928, in Bay City. She survives him. Mr. Lewis was a retired carpenter. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Stanley (Youtha) Jacot and Mrs. John (Sharon) Hoornstra, both of Vassar; five grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Gladys Lewis, Vassar.
