4149. Aleta Getman

 - GFG - C
 - Obituary (Find A Grave / Oswego Daily Times June-Aug 1914)
Aleta Getman Lawton On July 26, about 8 o'clock, Leeta Getman, wife of Jesse A. Lawton, passed peacefully away. With the closing of her eyes in death sorrow and gloom settled like a pall upon the community. Leeta everywhere made friends and while they grieve over the loss of a dear friend their hearts go out in tenderest sympathy to the devoted husband, who has lost all that life held dear, to the grief stricken parents, sisters and brothers, whose loss is irreparable, and to the other relatives, all of whom held her near and dear.
Mrs. Lawton was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Getman of Palermo. She was born May 13, 1877, in the town of Palermo. She lived at home and attended rural schools in her earlier life, later taking a course in Fulton High school and training class. At the age of 17 she began teaching school, continuing in that work for over ten years. December 24, 1903, she was united in marriage to Jesse A. Lawton, who was a teacher.
She was taken ill several weeks ago and all that loving hands could do was done. In the midst of her pain she often comforted herself by these passages: "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you" and "the righteous shall have many afflictions." She possessed a kind and loving disposition, always ready and willing to help others, and it can be truthfully said of her: "Great should be her reward."
She left no children, but proved herself worthy of the name "mother." Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother and her father, three brothers, Bert J. Getman and Harland Getman of Palermo and Frank Getman of Parish; two sisters, Mildred Prior of Demster and Frances Salsbury of Fulton. The funeral was held in her parents home at Clifford at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. G. F. Miller officiating assisted by Riv. P. o. Wilcox, pastor of the M. E. church, New Haven. The remarks made were very fitting and consoling, but the service was one of great sadness and solemnity. Every heart was burdened with sorrow and sympathy for those who are bereft of that which they held near and dear. The floral tributes from the various organizations and friends were most beautiful and in great profusion, testifying to the love in which she was held. Interment was made at New Haven Cemetery.

Dear loved ones don't think me as in the tomb,
For 1 shall not fear its dark shadow and gloom.
I shall not fear though the river be wide,
For Jesus will carry me over the tide.
I'm going to live with the angels so fair,
I'll look for my loved ones and wait for them there,

CLIFFORD, Dec. 29 — At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Getman occured the marriage of their daughter Leeta to Jease Lawton, of Mexico. The bride's ancestors were among the pioneers of the Mohawk Valley. The following inscription on a tablet in Schenectady, located on the corner of North Church and Front streets, tells briefly of the experiences of one of them:
"Commemorating the massacre of February 8th, 9th, 1690. One hundred and fourteen French and ninety-six Indians entered during the night at North gate, located at this point.
Assault was commenced here. Seventy houses were burned, sixty persons killed and twenty-seven made prisoners. Outside this gate two were killed and two were made prisoners. Here Adam Vrooman resisted attack and his wife and child were killed."
The Vroomans came to this country rom Holland in 1649. Tehy served in the French and Indian war, and the revolution; also were members of the Legistature for many years. They were Danilel Getman's mother's people and the Getmans also were among the pioneers of the Mohawk Valley, and rendered cvaluable service in the wars mentiioned.
