 - Funeral Announcement (Oneida Weekly Herald, Utica, NY, Tuesday, October 23, 1860)
A WIDE AWAKE BURIAL —Henry Stansel, whose death from the premature discharge of a cannon we noticed a day or two since, was buried at Herkimer Thursday afternoon. The services were exceedingly imposing. The Wide Awakes turned out in a body, wearing the emblem of grief upon their caps and their banner draped in black. The Little Giants also bore testimony to their respect for the deceased by following his remains to the grave and lowering their flag at half-mast. This mark of respect toward a political opponent was keenly and gratefully appreciated. An eloquent address was pronounced over bis grave by Gen. Prescott; while the Herkimer Brass Band pluyed a dirge.

 - Newspaper Article (St Lawrence Republican, Ogdensburgh, NY, Tuesday, October 30, 1860)
A Melancholy Wide Awake Incident
To Republicans and Wide Awakes - On the evening of the 10th of October, upon the reception of the news of the glorious victories achieved in the States of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, by our Republican brethren, three men were detailed from our ranks to fire an appropriate salute, and in so doing, two of them, by a premature discharge of the cannon, were severely, if not fatally injured; the one having his right, and the other, his left arm blown off, besides receiving other injuries.
Both persons are of strictly temperate habits and their case is one that must appeal with force to every man woman and child.
Henry Stansel, a mechanic, the sole support of a wife and six children - two  of whom are twins but four weeks old - after suffering from the amputation of his right arm, upon being told by his physician, that on account of his critical situation, it was the intention of the Wide Awakes to abandon their contemplated trip to Little Falls, to attend the celebration; said, with the spirit of a partier, “Let them go by all means my heart is with them, and should I die let me be buried by my companions the Wide Awakes.” On the return from Little Falls hearing the music he requested that his torch should be lighted and hung out of the window, that all might know “there was a Wide Awake within”
Alexander Hilts is the sole support of a widowed mother. He remarked to his companions after the amputation of his left arm, “Well boys? Thank God I have my right arm loft with which to cast a vote for freedom and honest Old Abe!”
Under the circumstances we confidently appeal to our brethren for subscriptions for the aid of these two persons, and would suggest (without being considered too officious) that each Wide Awake company make up a purse of one dollar for each man in the company, and we assure you that such an action shall not be lost upon us.
Funds can be sent to Hon. Ezra Graves, Hon. A. H. Laffin, or James A. Suiter, Esq., who are a committee appointed to take charge of such funds.
Richard Wilson, Captain
Peter Pruyne, 1st Lieutenant,
  of Herkimer Wide-Awakes
 Herkimer, N.Y., Oct. 17th, 1860
To the editors of the Utica Herald: This morning, Mr. Stansel departed this life. His particular request was that he be buried by the Wide-Awakes in uniform. Invitations are hereby extended to all Wide-Awake clubs to attend the funeral of our deceased brother, in uniform, at Herkimer, ae 11 o'clock A.M., on Thursday, Oct. 18th, 1860 - We hope our brethren generally will unite with us on that occasion.
Your respectfully,   J.H.S.

Mr. Fenn rendered a logical sermon. Elegant floral tributes covered the somber casket and the final resting place was disguised by evergreen coverings. The deceased was in his 47th year and was a man of unquestioned judgement, an industrious and exemplary citizen. He is survived by his wife, Martha Bell Skinner, an aged mother and three brothers. The bearers wer patrons of Millers Mills Grange, of which the deceased was a helpful member.

 - Obituary (Ilion Citizen, NY, Thursday, August 4, 1910)
In the death of Frank Skinner. August 3 the town of Columbia loses one of its upright and most highly respected citizens. The end came quickly after a brief period of illness. He was stricken with heart trouble, suffering three attacks, going into a state of coma at midnight and not regaining consciousness. Mr. Skinner was a native and life-long resident of the town of Columbia and was of Revolutionary descent from both branches of his ancestry. His parents were Gersham Skinner and Jane Dygert. He was a great-grandson of Gersham Skinner, who participated in the Revoluniary struggle and was at the burning of the mill at Little Falls, and the deceased had the little trunk, purse and colonial money his ancestor carried from the burning mill of that occasion. The mother of the deceased was descended from the Revolutionary Dygerts graves of both being recently marked with appropriate ceremony at South Columba. On his mother's side he was a descendant of Judge Storing about whom history tells how he caused the arrest and fined a man for traveling Sunday. The man paying the fine asked a receipt, so that he might not be arrested again, which Judge Storing gave him, and the man converting the receipt into a note, had the same cashed by a Mr. Kane at Canajoharie and Judge Storing later had to pay the note. The deceased was a farmer quiet and unassuming and his life was a credit to the sturdy ancestry from which he sprang. There survive his widow and a brother, J. W. Skinner of Herkimer. The funeral will be held Saturday from his late home at 1 p.m. Rev. Mr. Cook of Miller's Mills will officiate and burial will be made at that place.
