Evelyn Jane Bessey

  Evelyn Johnston, 86, a resident of Golden Age Nursing Home, Tomahawk, died there at 8 a.m. Saturday. She has been a Tomahawk area resident for more than 65 years.
  The former Evelyn Bessey was born in Lincoln County, Nov. 24, 1897, daughte rof the late M.E. and Frances Bessey. She was married in tomahawk on april 16, 1919, to Louis Johnston. He died in 1953. She had formerly worked at Kaminsky's Restaurant and Roman's Restaurant in Tomahawk.
  Survivors include a son, Kenneth E., Fort Atkinson; a daughter, Grace Hess, Route 4, Tomahawk; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
  Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Kreuger and Sons Funeral Home, Tomahawk. the Rev. Conrad Mikelson, Tonmahawk, a retired Methodist minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Tomahawk. Frineds may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 tonight.

  George Washington GALLAGHER, son of John Owen Gallagher and Sarah Loretta Lincoln, was born on 17 July 1908 at Hebron, Morton County, ND. The family lived on a farm that is still to this day known as the "John Gallagher" farm. George was the youngest of 7 children. In the early 1920's he moved with his family to St. Paul, MN.
  He married Lillian Dorothea IZATT, daughter of James Edward IZATT and Florence Marie JOHNSTON, on 15 October 1927 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, MN. George worked at Raymer Hardware store and in the roundhouse of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad.
  He died on 8 September 1938 in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, MN, at age 30 during emergency surgery. George is buried at Elmhurst Cemetery, Saint Paul, Ramsey County, MN. Lillian could only afford to buy one grave in 1938. She had been widowed for 50 years when she died in 1988 and is buried in another section of Elmhurst Cemetery.
  George W. and Lillian's only child was my father, George Edward Gallagher.

  Richard Harry Shalla was born on Tuesday; July 1, 1930 in Iowa City; Johnson County, Iowa. Richard was the oldest of three children, to Ernest and Irene (Getman) Shalla. He was later joined by sisters, Joan Lee (Shalla) McCreedy and Mary Lou (Shalla) Wilson. Richard grew up during the depression and World War II era surrounded by many family members, including both sets of grandparents and a number of aunts and uncles. He helped his father who served as sexton of Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City and also while working various odd jobs in the Iowa City community.
  Richard graduated from Iowa City High School in 1947 and entered the University of Iowa. He took classes for a year, excelling in Mathematics. He left school to go to work and in 1953 joined the United States Army. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He received an honorable discharge in 1955 and returned to Iowa City. After returning from the service Richard began work at the Iowa City Pipeline, filling large tanker trucks. During this time, he and his father also worked for Donahue-Lensing Funeral Home tending to gravesites in country cemeteries in Johnson County. In 1964, he decided on a job change and started working for Contractors Tool and Supply. Richard retired as an Assistant Manager in 1988.
  Richard never married. He remained devotedly at home with his parents, taking care of both of them until his mother Irene passed away in 1982 of Alzheimer's and his father Ernest in 1988 of dementia and a stroke. His family spent many Sundays with friends eating delicious dinners, playing cards, and boating on the Iowa River, which were some of his happiest memories.
   Richard was always a very quiet kind man with an infectious laugh whose greatest joy was tending to the outdoors, wildlife, and the river. Richard Harry Shalla, age 77 passed away peacefully on Thursday; June 21, 2007 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshaltown; Marshall County, Iowa after a yearlong trial with dementia. Those left to mourn his passing are: One brother-in-law: Bill McCreedy of Iowa City, Iowa. One cousin: Clayton (Faye) Shalla of Iowa City, Iowa. Three nieces: Cindy (Craig) Kiene of Downy. Sarah Smith of Tennessee and Shalla Wilson of Iowa City. Three nephews: John (Deb) McCreedy of San Diego; San Diego County, California. David (Cindy) and Joe (Annie) McCreedy both of Iowa City. Plus dear friends: Phyllis and Rick Ruppert. Richard was preceded in death by his sisters; Joan, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1980 and Mary Lou, who died of cancer in 2002 and her husband, Richard's brother-in-law David Wilson who died in 2003. May they rest in peace.
  Visitation will be on Monday; June 25, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services for Richard "Dick" Shalla will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday; June 26, 2007. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.

  Robert Getman
  Dr. Robert Jones Getman, beloved Quad-Cities dentist of more than 50 years, passed away Sunday, March 4, at 2 a.m. at the Genesis West Medical Center in Davenport, due to cancer.
   Services for Dr. Getman are pending and will be announced.
   Dr. Robert Getman was born in Davenport, June 26, 1922. He attended Davenport High School where he was active in the ROTC, the theatre program in which he played in "Our Town," among many others, and served as editor of "The Blackhawk" school paper. He also studied at St. Ambrose College, Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and received his B.S. and D.D.S. from the University of Iowa, in Iowa City.
   While in college, Dr. Getman was a member of the radio station WSUI's staff, president of Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
   After graduating from the School of Dentistry at the State University of Iowa, Dr. Getman became associated with his father, Dr. Robert H. Getman, in the general practice of dentistry. He later took over his mother, Dr. Blanche Jones Getman's, practice.
   Dr. Getman was a past president of the Davenport Rotary Club, and a founding member of the Bettendorf Rotary Club.
   Dr. Getman served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. During his service in the Korean War era, he was a disc jockey at the U.S. Air Base in Reykjavik, Iceland.
   Dr. Getman married Jane V. Lohmiller in April 1949.
   Dr. Getman will always be remembered for his devotion to his patients and the community, serving as official photographer and videographer of the annual charity event, "Festival of Trees." He also served as chairman on the committee for all his high school reunions through the years.
   He was very interested in amateur radio, film editing, sporting events and exercise. His favorite sport was bicycling with his dear friend, Jack Heblan.
   He is survived by his sister, Marion Getman Maxwell, Iowa City; daughter, Tracey Getman Fulton, adopted at birth, Davenport; son, James Lowell Getman, Davenport; grandchildren, James Mathew Getman, Sandra Jane Voss, both of Davenport and Lisa Ann Corsiglia, Bettendorf. Dr. Getman was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Lohmiller Getman; his father, Dr. Robert H. Getman; his mother, Dr. Blanche Jones Getman; and his brother, Charles Lyle Getman, who died at 10 months of age.

  Marian F. Maxwell, of Oaknoll Retirement Community, passed away at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City, on August 8, 2014, following a long illness. A private family service will be held at a later date.
  Marian was born in Davenport on June 10, 1925 to Drs. Robert and Blanche Getman. Marian graduated from Davenport High School and the University of Iowa in 1947 and married Dr. John R. Maxwell in Davenport, Iowa. Her main interests were her family and reading, particularly history and historical novels.
  She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Dr. Robert J. Getman and infant Lyle.
  She is survived by her husband; daughters Christy McGinty and Carol Gorman (Ed) of Cedar Rapids; sons Paul Maxwell of Arlington, VA and Dr. Steven Maxwell (Virginia Cox) of Dubuque; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
  The family would like to thank Dr. Christina Donelson and the staff at Mercy Hospice for their loving care.
