- NOTE: Evelyn’s birth certificate says:
Full Name of Child: Effie Angelia LaParr
Date of Birth: June 22nd, 1922.She has always been known as Evelyn, even on the early census records. I’m assuming because Fred’s mother was Effie Angelia Remington and they combined it to Evelyn. Also, she always thought her birthday was June 11th, 1922. When we got her birth certificate, it said June 22nd, 1922.
- Wayne,
Thank you for your interest. I will try to keep a long story as short as possible…
We have always known that my Grandmother Evelyn was adopted by Floyd and Daisy Petrie sometime around the age of 8. About 2 years ago, while searching for some pictures, we came across a small box of her things. In it were 3 letters addressed to Daisy. Two from Evelyn's biological father, and one from her step mother. They indicated that Fred wanted Evelyn back and was coming to get her, that she wasn't supposed to be taken away permanently. That obviously never happened, since she stayed with the Petrie's. We never knew the name of her biological parents and she never spoke of them. The letters were signed by Fred I. LaParr and suddenly we were on the hunt.
Through Ancestry we were able to find a 1925 census record listing her with her sisters Dora and Pauline. I was able make contact with Pauline’s grand-daughter, (Traci Whilen). She had Evelyn listed on her family tree with the name Petrie, but no information after that. She discovered her name change to Petrie because she had a copy of Charles J. Cring’s last will and Testament listing all 5 of Pearl’s children and their current residences. (I have attached this last will and testament as confirmation of this connection). After discovering her mother’s name, Pearl Cring, I have been able to trace her as far as Solomon Kring, her grandfather.
The other day while trying to do some research on Pearl’s mother, Emma Benson, I stumbled across a connection to the Getman family tree. I have been deep diving into the information for the last several days and found Evelyn’s sisters listed, but not her. I am assuming that no one knew what happened to her, and since we had no idea of her biological parent’s names, we were clueless to make this connection. We have now.In regards to her life. She was raised by Floyd and Daisy. She had one sister - Gertrude (Petrie) Mahoney - born 4/26/1923. Daisy passed away in May of 1961. Floyd passed away on December 26th, 1982.
Evelyn married John Dewey Beyer and eventually settled on a farm on the West Road in Lowville, NY. They had 8 children spanning 24 years: Martin Beyer - (3 Children - and 4 grandchildren), Sharon (Beyer) Jones - (3 children - and 3 grandchildren), Glenn Beyer - (5 children - 2 passed - 10 grandchildren I believe), Linda (Beyer) Jones - (4 children - 10 grandchildren), Sandy (Beyer) Bacon - (6 children - 2 passed, 1 shortly after birth and 1 around 1971 in a farming accident - she has 8 grandchildren), Donna (Beyer) Riley - (1 child - 3 grandchildren), Jeannine (Beyer) Munger - (2 children - and 6 grandchildren), and Timothy Beyer - (no children). There are some great-great grandchildren too - but I'm not sure exactly the amount.
All her children, except for Sharon are still living. Sharon passed away in 2015.
Her husband John passed away on 8/27/1977 at the age of 58 from a heart attack. Evelyn passed away on January 17th, 2003 from complications associated with Alzheimer's Disease.
I know this is a lot of info...but we are so delighted to make all these connections that have been such a mystery for so many years. If you are interested in any other information, please don't hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Darlene (Jeffers)
