John Bort moved in 1844 from Herkimer county, New York, to Niles township, where he located with his wife. He remained here but a short time and purchased a farm in Lincoln township. This he sold and purchased a farm of 164 acres in Royalton upon which he lived till his death. He was engaged extensively in raising fruit and was the first person to engage largely in the culture of strawberries. His farm in Lincoln contained 144 acres. This he bought for $2,200 and sold in 1865 for $22,000. He died in 1903 in his 94th year. He belonged to a long-lived family of 13 children born to his parents, all but three of whom lived to be over 90 years old. Two of his children are now living in the county, Fayette M. and Harry G. both of Royalton. Harry G. is the present supervisor of Royalton township.
("History of Berrien and Van Buren Counties, MI," (1880) pp. 311-12:)
Among the many gentlemen whose biographies appear on the pages of this history, none better deserve mention than he whose name stands at the head of this sketch. He was born Nov. 25, 1810, in Herkimer Co., N.Y.; his early life was spent on a farm. At the age of 20 he left his father, hiring as a farm-hand for two years at $13 per month. He then went to Canada, working in a saw-mill at $26 per month.
Oct. 10, 1832, married Mariette, daughter of Otis and Mary Smith. Mrs. Bort was born Feb. 24, 1826, in Herkimer Co., N.Y. After his marriage Mr. Bort rented his father's farm, remaining there two years. At the time his father-in-law dying, he was appointed administrator of his estate; seven years passed before this was settled, there being a minor error. For four years he engaged in farming, first in Jefferson and then in Herkimer County. Removing to Peters' Corners, he engaged in harness-making; from that he went to traveling, selling fanning-mills and pumps.
In 1844 Mr. Bort settled in this county, purchasing a farm of 117 acres in Niles township; he sold this and removed to Royalton township, now Lincoln, where he bought 144 acres; again buying 164 acres in Royalton township, to which he removed, and on which he is now living. His principal employment while on the Lake farm was raising fruit.
Feb. 1, 1848, Mrs. Bort died, leaving four children, viz.: Otis S., Sophronia M., Mary J., and Charles E.
Jan. 2, 1850, he married, for his second wife, Sophronia, daughter of George Getman. Of this union were born six children, viz: Albert, Fayette, Harrie G., Eddie G., Jay E., and Mariette. Albert is living in Nebraska, the others are at home with their parents. Mr. Bort's father raised a family of twelve children - all living but one; two living in Michigan, one in Iowa, one in Wisconsin, and the others in New York. Mr. Bort is the ninth child, and he is now 69 years old. His father died in 1870, aged 83 years, having been twice married, his first wife dying in 1823 and the second in 1877.
Mr. Bort is an active, energetic man, anxious for the advancement of the country around him. He organized the first school on the lake, opening the school with only three scholars; has been school director and commissioner for two years. It has been his fortune nearly every time he has changed his residence, to stop where they had a schoolhouse to build, and he has assisted in building four schoolhouses.
Mr. Bort was ambitious to improve both his mind and his circumstances; this led him to employ diligently both his time and means, and as a result he has achieved a success in life which favorably contrasts with the beginning of his career.
 - ( "History of Berrien and Van Buren Counties, MI," (1880) pp. 308:)

 - Obituary (Richfield Springs Mercury, NY, January 11, 1906)
The following interesting sketch is from our South Columbia correspondent: The funeral of a former townsman, David Harter, who died at his home in Toledo, O., Friday, January 5, was held at the home of his son, Norman J. Harter, at Columbia Center, Sunday at 29 p.m., and attended by a large circle of relatives, neighbors and friends. His ancestors, Lawrence and Apolone Harter were among the Palatines who came to German Flatts in 1623, and drew lots 7 and 37 on the north side of the river, where the site of their primative log cabin is now occupied by the home of W. E. Kay, on the sunny slope west of the county seat. The history of the sufferings of their son, Capt. Henry Herter, and his wife, Katherine Piper, married in 1756, and the next year made prisoners during the French and Indian war is familiar to the inhabitants of the valley. Capt. Henry Harter also served in the revolution, as the following copy of a time-honored document by his descendants attensts.
      German Flatts, July 7, 1776
Sirs: - This serves to inform you that I received orders this morning from Major General Schuyler that you and your company must remain at Fort Stanwix for the time of your engagement. From your friend and humble servant.
   Ebenezer Cox
    "Lieutenant Colonel"
Capt. Harter remained at his post and participated in the battle of Oriskany the following year. His family Bible, which has passed down through the different generations, is a massive leather covered volume, yellowed with age and bearing date, MDCCXLVII. In 1795 the family came to Warren and Capt. Harter is the eldest of six generations bearing the name who rest in the rural cemetery north of Jordanville, in the locality known as the Kingdom. The deceased, born in Warren, Herkimer county, December 19, 1821, was the last survivor of the four children of Capt. Harter's eldest grandson, Peter P. Harter, and his wife, Elizabeth Moyer, grand daughter of the renowned Peter S. Tygert, and niece of the two wives of Gen. Herkimer. About 1840 he married Lydia, a daughter of Bartlett B. Getman and Elizabeth Grant. Bartlett Getman's father, Private Frederick Getman, jr., and grandfather, Capt. Frederick Getman, sr., and Elisabeth Grant's father, Marks Grant, all lived for many years at Columbia Center, and was closely identified with the Preformed church, for many years holding the office of elder or deacon, and was doubtless its first Sunday school superintendent, and a faithful aid in the choir. He served his town as supervisor in 1868 and was Justice of the peace for many yeas. After the death of his wife he went to Ohio, where he married again. He is survived by three of his four children, Norman of this town, Mrs. Nelson Stevens of Kendall and Helen, with whom he resided in Toledo, O. Helen Harter of Ohio and N. A. Stevens were here to attend the funeral.
