- Newspaper Article (The Daily Press, Utica, NY, Tuesday, February 16, 1971)
SAUQUOIT - A Sauquoit woman died early Monday when fire destroyed her two-story home at 2978 Oneida St.
Mrs. Jeanine DeRosia, 36, was pronounced dead near Orchard Hall at 12:30 a.m. by Dr. Preston Clark, coroner. Yesterday's Press incorrectly identified her as Mrs. Viola DeRosia.
HER HUSBAND, Roger T., 43, tried to rescue her after he awoke shortly after midnight and heard her screaming. He had gone to bed and his wife had stayed up to watch television in the living room. When it was impossible for him to get down stairs to rescue her because of the heat and flames, he jumped 20 feet from a second-story bedroom into a snowbank and raced next door to the home of David Butler who called Mutual Aid.
He was reported in fair condition today in Faxton Hospital with extensive burns.
Efforts of firefighters to save Mrs. DeRosia also proved fruitless.
About 70 firefighters from Sauquoit and Willowvale Volunteer Fire Departments fought the blaze.
Firemen found the body of Mrs. DeRosia shortly before 12:30 lying on the kitchen floor about 15 feet from a rear door.
Sauquoit Fire Chief Russell Schafer, who directed operations, said DeRosia "had some clothes on and [s]he was bleeding and appeared to be in shock. I asked him whether there was anybody else in the house."
"Yes, my wife's in there," Schafer quoted DeRosia as saying, "He heard her holler 'help' and tried to get downstairs."
Schafer said the fire originated on the frist floor and swept quickly through the house. He said he had no idea as to the cause.
MRS. DEROSA was born in Utica the daughte rof Merle and Mary Callahan Skinner.
In 1953 she was graduated from Chadwicks High School and in 1962 was married to Mr. DeRosia.
She was formerly employed at Griffiss AFB and later Mele Manufacturing Inc.
Mrs. DeRosia was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Chadwicks.
Besides her husband, she leaves her parents of Chadwicks and a sister, Mrs. Earl (Betty) McCarthy, New Hartford.
The funeral will be Thursday from the J. Donald Smith Funeral Home and at 9:30 from St. Anthony's. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayville.
Calling Hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow.
