RED BANK, July 3, - Edward Clayton, of Lincroft, has been appointed a missionary of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society and will sail for China earlyin the fall, having been assigned to educational work in Hanyang, Central China. Hanyan is a city of about 150,000 population and the center of a district containing more than 2,000,000 persons. The only Christins prostelyting is carried on by twelve missionaries of the American Baptist Board, Next Saturday Mr. Clayton will be married to Miss Grace Tew, of Hamilton, N. Y., and she will accompany him to the foreign mission field.
Mr. Clayton was graduated from the Red Bank High School in 1903. After leaving Red Bank he attended Peddle Institute, Hightstown, being graduated there in 1906. Four years later he was a member of the graduating class of Colgate Univesity, and the following year returned to Colgate for graduate work. During the last year he has been employed as registrar and teacher at Peddie Institute.- Newspaper Article (The Brookfield Courier, Brookfield, NY, June 29, 1944)
E. H. Clayton (Colgate, 1920) has just written the story of his thirty years as missionary teacher in China for the American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society. The book, HEAVEN BELOW, has just been published by Prentice-Hall, Inc. New York City.
Dr. Clayton went to China in 1912 and served the mission schools at Huchow, Chekiang, and Hangchow. Most of the thirty years were spent as principal of Wayland Academy in Hangchow, a city so beautiful that it was called "heaven below."
Those were some of the most exciting years in Chinese history, and Clayton's story is colored by revolution, the founding of the Republic, and the Sino-Japanese War. For five years during the occupation by the Japanese, Wayland Academy became the refuge for thousands of Chinese women and children. Interned for Seven months after Pearl Harbor, Clayton was finally sent back to America on the first trip of the Gripsholm.
HEAVEN BELOW is not, however, entirely a War story. It is, rather, a warmly understanding account of a mission of good will, told with realism, vigor and wit. Some of the completely delightful episodes include big game hunting in the mountains of the interior, the rich and varied life of a missionary doing his work and bringing up five children, plus innumerable sidelights on the Chinese of every class, in peace as well as in war.
Clayton, who received his honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Colgate in 1939, is now living in Red Bank, New Jersey. His wife, the former Grace Tew, is the daughter of Mr. George J. Tew of Hamilton. Since his return to America, Clayton has been speaking to various audiences throughout the country. One of his recorded talks has been played over 3,000 times, and one of his stories, now incorporated in HEAVEN BELOW, has been distributed by the OWI to the Allied Nations on four continents.

Scared? Our Knees Knocked As We Swept to French Coast'
"I started thinking about home . . . about the things I used to do and the good times I used to have, and above all, how would you folks take it if. I did get killed?
"Suddenly, all of that vanished from my mind completely as if I had just awakened from a dream. The coast of France loomed up before us like a monster out of the sea. . . .".
This was the reaction of First Class . Seaman Norman C. Tew, 20 - year - old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde F. Tew of R. D. 3, Binghamton, as his minesweeper approached France June 6. Thousands of pages have been written about D-Day, but the Binghamton youth's letter-to his parents can be classed with the most vivid reports of action in that invasion.
''The bombing of the beach defenses continued and the noise increased with a steady crescendo," he wrote. "At dawn we had completed our task successfully. . . . We found ourselves directly in front of a. destroyer and a heavy cruiser.
"The first shell . . . went directly over our bridge and landed about 20 feet off our stern with an abrupt explosion and a plume of water. Their first salvo had fallen short of their intended target, the cruiser and destroyer, and luckily .missed us also.
"It didn't take us long to leave that area or at least get out from under the barrage . . . It was getting too warm for comfort. We were directly in the middle of a firing competition and the two opponents weren't sparing a thing.
"The ships would let go with all they had and W-I-S-S-H-H-H the shells would scream as they went overhead. Then- W-I-S-S-S-H-H-H the Jerries would send their shells at the two ships only to fall short or overshoot their target.
…"I began to say to myself- W-i-s-s-h-h the hell this was all over with. It's an awful suspense to wait and see where their salvos would land but when we saw a plume of water shoot into the air and didn't hear, any more coming, we all would, heave a large sigh of relief to know that those babies had once more missed us."
Seaman Tew was stationed at a signal light on the bridge, and he had never before heard the sound a large shell makes.
"I couldn't receive a darn thing for the next 15 or 20 minutes, but I wasn't the only one. . . . When the second salvo came over I scootched to the deck where I came face- to face with Ken Bauman.
"I was whiter than a sheet, of paper and whiter than a sheet, and I knew it and Ken had a look of complete surprise on his face: He finally uttered the first words with "What's cookin', ate?'
"I can't remember whether I made a reply or not, but I do remember that it took us about 15 minutes to light our first cigaret. Ken remarked afterwards that he had heard the expression about people's", knees knocking but had never believed it. ... He said that he nearly beat himself knockkneed.
"Then our troops went in and established a beachhead on French soil. The invasion was more successful than most of us had expected it to be. We were looking forward to lots of German planes, but I only saw one and that was shot down in flames.
"We have been quite successful in sweeping and have picked ourselves up a few mines here and there. In our later sweeping operations we were fired upon."
Seaman Tew entered the navy in February, 1943, and has been overseas since last February. He is a graduate of North High School.
