Youth Saves Boy From Drowning in Onondaga Creek
LAD, 3, REVIVED BY FIRST AID METHODS
Tripping from the bank into Onondaga Creek near the Midland av. bridge Thursday afternoon, Richard Crough, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Crough of 483 Midland av., was pulled to safety by Lawrence Gascon, 15, of 236 Tremont st., after his older brother, John Crough, 5, waded to safety.
First aid measures applied by Motorcycle Patrolman Patrick Hanlon to Richard is believed to have saved his life. The child had swallowed a quantity of water and was in a semi-conscious condition when Gascon carrięd him to shore.
The near-drowning happened near the Crough home. John was the, first to spread the alarm. He ran to his home and told his mother what had happened. Lawrence Gascon was sitting on the porch of his home which overlooks the creek He heard the mother's cries for help and ran to the creek.
Without hesitatjng, young Gascon plunged into the creek fully clothed and pulled the child to safety. He handed the child to Francis Parent, 23, of 236 Tremont st., who was attracted to the creek bank, and Parent applied first aid treatment. Several minutes later Patrolman Hanlon arrived at the scene and revived the boy.
An internę on the Hospital of the Good Shepherd ambulance praised Hanlon and Parent for their hard efforts and declared if it had not been for them there was no doubt that the child would have drowned. The lad was treated at the hospital and then taken home.
The boys had been warned many times by their parents to stay away from the creek bank. Wednesday Richard and another youth ran away and were gone for several hours before they returned.
Despite a severe reprimand from his parents Richard had the wanderlust again yesterday and set off with his older brother. They clambered down the steep earthen bank and were playing along the concrete retaining wall. One of them tripped and in the excitement both plunged into the water.- Obituary (Syracuse Herald-American, NY, Sunday, January 23, 1955)

Little Falls. July 10.-Ordering his wife to kiss him for the last time, Ralph Getman of llion shot her at the Globe hotel here Saturday night and then escaped. Mrs. Gettman is in the Little Falls hospital with little hope held out for her recovery. A search throughout Central New York is being made for Getman.
The shooting came as the result of long trouble between the young couple who have been married but eighteen months. Saturday Getman went to Utica and found his wife at a dance. This aroused his -anger.
He asked her to return with him to Little Falls and she refused. He threatened her with a revolver and she consented to leave with him. On the car they quarreled. He told her that he was going to kill her.
Reaching- this city they left the car find he tried to force her to walk to a lonely spot on Fifth street. Her mother saw his actions and started after them. She persuaded them to come to her home at the Globe hotel.
At the hotel the quarrel was resumed. Getman told his wife that he was going to kill her and asked her to Kiss him for the last time. George Stark, the girl's father, entered the room and told Getman that Chief or Long was coming for him.
“I'll get you before he gets me.” declared Getman, as he fired at Stark. The shot went wide. Getman turned to his wife and fired at her. The bullet struck her in the side and she samk in her chair, ier infant baby fallin in her lap.
The woman was rushed to the hospital and placed on the operating table. The bullet was traced through her left lung. Getman made good his escape.- Newspaper Article (Syracuse Journal, NY, Monday, July 10, 1916)
LITTLE FALLS, July 10.—Mrs. Winnie Getman lies in the hospital to-day struggling for life with a bullet wound in her left lung, inflicted by a 38-callber revolver fired by her husband, Ralph Getman of Illon. Getman made a good escape and is still missing. Getman also made an attempt on the life of George Stark, the girl's uncle, but the shot went wide and shattered a window.
The shooting occurred Saturday evening at about 10:30 o'clock, at the Globe Hotel in John St., of which George Stark is the proprietor. Trouble has existed between the young couple for some time. Getman wanted his young wife to live in Ilion, where he is employed at the Remington Arms plant, and if she would not do this he wanted their infant babe. It will be recalled that a couple of weeks ago Getman was apprehended by the police for stealing the baby and taking it to Ilion. Since then Getman has been in this city and has been a constant disturber at the Stark house.
District Attorney W. Earl Ward was notified as was Coroner Hunt. The district attorney took charge of the case, while the officers made a thorough search of the lumber yards near Fifth St., which direction Getman ran after the shooting. Chief Long also arrived some time later and he joined in the search. Later District Attorney Ward and Chief Long went to Ilion to the fellow's home. His mother answered the door and when asked where her son was she replied that she had not seen him since 8 o'clock, when he left the house.
Mrs. Getman was married to Ralph Parker Getman about 18 months ago. They resided at the Globe Hotel until some months ago, when they separated. She is 19 years of age. Her condition to-day is very critical and only faint hopes are held for her recovery. Dr. Douglas of Utica was called for consultation.
Getman is described as being five feet, seven or eight inches tall, weight 150, age about 23, stocky build, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair. He was hatless, wore blue suit with semi-pegged trousers and black shoes. Ho is a very good looking fellow.Newspaper Article (The Times-Union, Albany, NY, Wednesday, January 5, 1921)
Herkimer. N. Y.—A five-year search all over North America for the slayer of pretty Mrs. Winifred Getman of Ilion, ended Monday with the arrest at Tucker. Arkansas, of the husband, Ralph, who will be brought back to face a charge of first degree murder. It is said that the prisoner, in addition to murdering his wife in July. 1916. is also charged with two other Crimes in Arkansas, one of which is forgery.
The capture of Getman was effected by means of letters written by Getman to-Ilion friends which were turned over to Sheriff Cress here some days ago.
The story of the murder and escape of the slayer given by the police, is that the couple had been quarreling all the way from Ilion on the trolley car. Jealousy probably was the cause of the quarrel. When they got off the trolley car in Little Falls. Mrs. David Roberts, who was sitting on her front porch, saw Getman grab his wife by the arm and pulled her into the railroad yards. She notified George Stark and he notified Katherine Leonard, his sister, who was the mother of Mrs. Getman.
Mrs. Leonard then went to the railroad yard and found Getman and his wife. Mrs. Leonard persuaded them to go along with her to the Globe hotel. They were talking things over in the dining room, Mrs. Getman holding her baby.
George Stark came into the dining room and said to Getman: "Chief Long will be here about 11 o'clock to arrest you for burglarizing Dan Nast's pawn shop on June 30, and stealing a pearl-handled revolver and other articles."
At that. Getman turned to his Wife and said: "You have told this, and I am going to shoot you and the baby." He pointed the revolver at George Stark and discharged it harmlessly. Turning to his wife he said: "Winifred, kiss me goodbye—I am going to kill you and the baby.". He fired two shots. The woman fell dead and Getman escaped.- Newspaper Article (Oneonta Daily Star, Jul 14, 1922)
