Dolgeville — Mrs. Jennie Avery, 69, of 143 N. Main St., a life resident of the village, died yesterday in her home.
She was a daughter of William and Elija (sic) Butler Pentland. She was married in 1913 to John Bloodough. He died in 1948. Mrs. Avery was married in 1953 to John Avery. She was an employe of the Allegro Shoe Corporation, Little Falls, until her retirement in 1962, and was a member of the Baptist Church.
Besides her husband, she leaves a step-daughter, Mrs. Grace Henry, Clay; a brother Hubert Pentland, Dolgeville; and four sisters, Mrs. Carrie Canner and Mrs. Gertrude Hunt, both of Dolgeville; Mrs. Maybelle Jacchin St. Petersburg, Fla,, and Mrs. Gladys Butler, Tampa, Fla.
The funeral will be at 2 Thursday from the Neilsen Funeral Home with the Rev. William Gilpin, pastor of Ingham Mills Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Dolgeville Cemetery.

He was born July 23,1900 in Forestport. NY, son of Charles and Marion Lawton Elthorp. He attended schools in Forestport. He was first married to Sadie Perkins in 1922. She passed away in 1930 He later married Thelma Cushman in St Agnes Church in Utica. NY He was employed at the Renkins Dairy for seven years and for the former Corrado Feed Mill in Frankfort, retiring in 1965. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Frankfort.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Betty Olin of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Gertrude Patterson, Long Beach. LI.. Mrs. Mona Marko of Fairfield, Mrs Joyce -rons of Syracuse. WATERVLIET - Donald P. Elthorp, 83, formerly of Watervliet, died on March 10, 2007 at the Albany County Nursing Home. Mr. Elthorp was born in Utica on January 12, 1924, a son of the late Howard and Thelma (Cushman) Elthorp. He graduated from Frankfort High School and never married. In 1943, Donald entered the U.S. Navy, where he first served in World War II. He re-enlisted twice for a total of over eight years including service in New Hebrides, Guam and Cuba. Donald was honorably discharged during the Korean War in 1952, with the rank of storekeeper technical 2nd class. He was first employed in grocery stores and for Archway Cookies. He later retired as a maintenance worker from Sears Roebuck & Company in Schenectady. Donald had resided in Sanderson Courts, Watervliet, prior to his admission to Ann Lee Nursing Home and, more recently, Albany County Nursing Home. He was a member of St. Ambrose Church, Latham and its holy name society.
Survivors include one sister, Edna Marko of Middleville, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Olin and Gertrude Patterson. A memorial Mass will be held at St. John's Church, Newport, N.Y. at a later date. Private interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Schenectady on Tuesday. There are no calling hours. Ilion - Mr. Andrew “Ted” Oldfield, 84 of E. North St., a Herkimer native, passed away on Saturday evening, March 14, 2009, in Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford.
He was born in Herkimer on March 4, 1925, son of the late George and Edith (Gilbert) Oldfield and educated in Herkimer schools. On May 4, 1957, he was united in marriage with Patricia Deck in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer with the Rev. Fred Cotnam officiating. Ted was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II. He enlisted on June 9, 1943, and was honorably discharged on March 20, 1946, holding the rank of Private, First Class, and served in the 65th infantry division. For many years he was a self-employed contractor.
Ted was a life member of the Michael S. Pliseck Post No. 4915 of Herkimer, life member of the AM Vets No. 777 of Ilion, past commander of VFW Post No. 502, Ilion/Frankfort, past county commander of the VFW, past commander of the American Legion Post No. 38 of Herkimer, and associate life member of the Ilion Marine Corps League.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; a son, Daniel Oldfield and wife Louise of Fairfield; a daughter, Linda Owens of Deansboro; a sister, Beverly Grzeszczuk of Herkimer; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Peg Deck; a special niece, Ann Hilts; a daughter-in-law, Judy Whitford; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was predeceased by a son, Donald Oldfield and by his brothers, Bob, Girard, and Jack “Gordan.”

HERKIMER-FRANKFORT – Joyce Irons, age 70, of N. Prospect St., Herkimer, formerly of Frankfort, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Home.
She was born on May 3, 1943, in Herkimer, the daughter of Howard and Thelma (Cushman) Elthorp. Joyce graduated from Frankfort schools and Utica School for professional nursing at St. Elizabeth and Utica College. She was employed at various hospitals for thirty years, including Syracuse V.A. and St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse. Most recently she was employed at Faxton Hospital from 1987 to 1993. Joyce was a member of St. Francis De Sales Church, Herkimer and former Eucharistic Minister, Rosary group and Marion helpers. She was also an avid reader of true crime and detective stories.
Surviving family members cherishing her memory are her twin sister and her husband, Janet and Eugene Kelly, of Frankfort; her nephew and his wife, Patrick and Cynthia Kelly, of Cedarville; very special great-niece and Goddaughter, Amber Marie Kelly and her daughter, Autumn Rose Kelly; Godson, Michael Kelly; many close and dear friends, Leonard and Betty Riddell, of Ilion, Trina and Rick Pettengill and daughter, Klarissa, of Ilion, Jean Goettel, of Liverpool, Jill young, Richard and Pat Mas, of N. Utica and Pat’s mother, Maureen; all the staff and Gerry Elthorp at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare; and very special friend, Matthew Gabriel, of Herkimer.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at St. Francis De Sales Church, 219 N. Bellinger St., Herkimer, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, Pastor. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Mr. Varin had resided in Mohawk until moving to Ilion a year ago. He was a member of the Ilion Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and First Methodist Church.

She was born May 20,1907, in Forestport, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Marion Lawton Elthorp. On July 17, 1926, she married Martin J. Sorenson in Frankfort, N.Y. He died in 1968. She was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Ilion, its parish Aide Group and church guild.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Dorothy Sorenson, of Mohawk, James and Katherine Sorenson, of llion; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Audrey Sorenson. of Fort Pierce, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Milton (Alice) Palmer of Old Forge, one brother, Robert Elthorp, of Mohawk: 11 grandchildren: nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. DOLGEVILLE — Richard N. Miller, 85, of Military Road, Salisbury, a farmer and blacksmith for 25 years, died Nov. 19 in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born in Salisbury. He married Esther McCarthy in 1908. She died in 1949.
Mr. Miller was a member of St. Bridget's Church, Salisbury, and was a trustee for many years and later for St. Joseph's Church. He was a former member of the Salisbury Grange.
Mr. Miller leaves four sons, John of Henrietta, Richard of Dolgeville, Bernard of Little Falls, James of Salisbury Center, and two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Margaret) Bilinski of Dolgeville and Mrs. Raymond (Mary) Jones of St. Johnsville.
The funeral will be at 9 Friday from the Moore Funeral Home and at 9:30 from St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery.

GLOVERSVILLE — Archibald J. McCarthy, 75, of 27 E. Eighth Ave. was pronounced dead on arrival about 3 p.m. Saturday at Littauer Hospital where he was taken after being stricken.
Mr. McCarthy was born at Gray and lived in the Gloversville area 25 years. He was a lumber operator in the Speculator and Jackson Summit areas.
Survivors are three sons, Donald McCarthy of North Creek, Alfred McCarthy of Little Falls and James McCarthy of Amsterdam; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Wyatt of Schenectady, Mrs. Elizabeth Stone of Troy and Mrs. Shirley LaFave of Grand Gorge; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Thompkins of Wayne; a half-brother, William Roberts of Spencerport; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for John A. McCarthy, 31, of 8 Pinewood road, Guilderland, a former school teacher who committed suicide Tuesday, will be held at the Glock funeral home at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Rev. Arthur Gerhardt, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church of McKownsville, will officiate.
Born in Dolgeville, McCarthy was a graduate of the Cortland State College and was a member of the New York State Teachers' Association. He had lived in Guilderland for the past five years and was formerly employed as a physical education teacher in the Albany school district.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Roeckelein McCarthy; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archibald J. McCarthy of Dolgeville; three brothers, Donald A. McCarthy of Speculator, James W. McCarthy of Dolgeville and Alfred F. McCarthy of Little Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral home will be open tonight after 7 o'clock. Burial will be in Dolgeville.
McCarthy's body was found Tuesday afternoon on the Perkins Clearing road about eight miles north of Speculator with a bullet wound in the head.
At his side lay a .303 British Enfield rifle. State police said McCarthy apparently drove onto the road from Route 10 and then walked about 100 yards beyond his car bef6re firing the fatal shot which was heard by a game protector who discovered the body.

Herkimer - Six weeks after his aubstitute was fatally scalded whan he planted into a vat of boiling water at the plant of the Standard Furniture Company, a veteran employe met similar fate.
The latest victim is John Pugh, 51, of East Frankfort, who died today in Herkimer Memorial Hospital.
He was badly scalded Wednesday when he fell into the mill log pond vat outside the plant. The water, heated to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, is used to peel bark off logs before they are carried into the mill.
The accident occurred when Pugh attemped to roll a log into the vat by use of a cant hook, lost his balance.
Henry Buddenhagen, working on the opposite aide of the pond, saw the accident. He pulled Pugh from the water and had hlm partially undressed when other employes, including George Drain and Maurice King arrived.
Pugh was wrapped in blankets and carried to an ambulance. At Memorial Hospital, Dr. James F. Gallo said Pugh suffered burns of the legs, arms and body.
In a similar accident, inside the plant, March 11, Gerald Moselle, 24, was fatally scalded and died 10 hours later. The fatality occurred on the day Moselle was substitutlng for Pugh who was absent from work.
Moaelle also was said to have lost his footing while a log was being lowered into the vat of boiling water.
Today an autopsy was ordered by Dr. James W. Graves, coroner, to be made by Dr. James Gallo, Herkimer and Dr. W. J. MacDonald, Mohawk.
John Pugh was born in Frankfort, son of William and Louise Sohn Pugh. When a youth he spent several years on a farm in Schuyler. For 13 years he was engaged in the trucking business and the past 20 years he had been employed by the local company.
He served two terms as Town of Frankfort highway superintendent, 1921-1922 and 1932-1933.
On Nov. 22, 1903 he married Edith Lindsay who survives with three sons, John L. Pugh, senior at Oswego Normal School; Robert Pugh, also employed by Standard Furniture Company and Richard Pugh, and a sister. Mrs. Edward Fay, all of Frankfort.

Mr. Elbert R. Tanner, 88, a resident of the Genesee Nursing Home and formerly of 133 Seward Ave., died Tuesday, September 17. 1985 at the home.
Mr. Tanner was bom July 23, 1897 in Herkimer, son of the late Herbert K. and Margaret Sitts Tanner and attended schools in Herkimer and in Mohawk. He was married to the former Elizabeth C. Lindsay in 1922 in Utica. Mrs. Tanner died June 29, 1970. Mr. Tanner was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk for 38 years, retiring in 1960. He was a member of the New Hartford United Methodist Church and Amicable Lodge No. 664 F & AM. He also was a Veteran of WW I, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by one son, William E. Tanner of New Hartford; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall, Los Angeles, Ca., and Mrs. Elberta Little. Utica; one brother. Harold R. Tanner, Herkimer; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
